Attended the 2022 open weekend and was again impressed at the number of locomotives in steam and the equipment in progress. Great to see K186 back on the tracks. Friendly volunteers. Awesome place to visit particularly on the open days when things are in steam. They run loads of day tours around the state. Check out the website.

One of, if not THE best heritage rail experience money can buy. For an extraordinarily low cost, you and your family can go on trips they will form lifelong memories of a time where not every single train looked the same, where one day you are on shuttles between popular suburban hotspots, and the next, you could be on a weekend trip across the state, and on yet another day, you could be riding at high speed through the Latrobe Valley on the near world famous Snow Train. As of when this review is written, the author had their first trip with this amazing group, and it was nothing short of spectacular! Update: the author has now been to the bi-yearly open day, and has enjoyed Steam rails hospitality even more. An already spectacular group is now unparalleled.

We visited the Newport Workshops Open Day. This was a fantastic day out and a tribute to rail preservation. Kids and grown-ups had a blast with lots of interaction such as open carriages and locomotive cabins, while steam locos shunted back and forth all day. Highlights included a turntable in action and roaming through the timeless workshops.

Until recently I never knew that Steamrail Victoria existed. Until I visited it's location for very a different reason. It was at night and I was there for work. I do old trains and there is a lot of them there. They are magnificent and everything is from a different time. I did some reading on what Steamrail Victoria does and it's a fantastic thing. They run only with the help of volunteers trying to maintain the old trains. The buildings are fantastic which get used for filming but the train's steal the show. Because I wasn't there for to long I took some pics which I hope you enjoy. And please get on there website and have a look. It's worth while if you have an interest in steam trains or even better if you can offer any help with the restoration of the trains

Today was a great day to see steam trains doing their thing. Good friendly helpful staff and volunteers. Kids were clearly having fun getting up close to these engines. Older folk reminiscing.

Step back into our rich steam heritage with a visit to the Newport Workshops. The open day they held over the weekend was excellent. I counted 9 locos from the Y class from the 1880s to the mighty R class. They had 4 K class's in steam and showed them off in the parade. A nice fleet. The buildings are home to different groups dedicated to the task of restoring and maintaining our railway heritage. The buildings are all heritage listed and show a glimpse into our once thriving industrial past. Its something that should be maintained and cared for, for future generations. Steamrail operates its steam tours out of these workshops. Its here at the workshops that all the maintenance etc is carried out. Steam locomotives needs lots of care and most of it is done by volunteers. While the open day is only held every 2 years Steamrail runs a variety of tours every year Steamrail has been given 5 years more lease after which Victrack can retake the whole lot. Once Vicktrack has done this there is little doubt that they will sell off the land, let the buildings fall into disrepair and turn as much of it into ugly apartments as they can. Support Steamrail by going on a tour and through social media. Keep the past alive!

The Steamrail Victoria day was a fantastic display of the development of rail transport in Victoria. Steam engines are a joy to behold and the display of early craftsmanship was fantastic. The Newport Folk and Fiddle Club provided great entertainment and information displays added to a fine event.

They can't be blamed for the heatwave but made a good effort to ease the experience for visitors. Excellent array of locos in steam and other exhibits. Well done

Note this is an active rail yard and not open to the public. Awesome bits of heritage trains which are preserved by a dedicated group of volunteers who give up countless hours to ensure that they still operate all around Melbourne and the state.

I went on a stream train to Ballarat & back, it is awesome as all kids loved it. My partner & I went yesterday with our 2 kids to the opening day which we enjoyed except right at the end where we left with 2 crying kids. We understood that the steam trains have whistles & are a little loud but there is a horn above doors 10 & 11 that went off 3 times in a row that not only scared us but most people around us. Another thing is the cannon that they fired for no other reason but to add entertainment to something it has nothing related to steam trains. When we complained to management, Lionel very rudely said "There are signs up saying how loud things are" but wasn't a sign at all when we looked plus he was rude to a co-worker by telling her to go back to her train after she was trying to console my son. On a finishing note we had a good day but it was just not wheelchair & pram friendly also needs a bit more rides but an awesome day out.

Congratulations to all the volunteers who put this mammoth event together. It was a truly amazing show of steam as well as some diesel locomotives. The workshop was well worth wandering through.
