    * Beautifully restored by Surat Municipal Corporation. * The audio visual history of the castle is very informative. * Lots of galleries with artifacts -with information- and all galleries are air-conditioned. * Ground floor is only accessible for the wheelchair. * About 2 to 3 hrs needed to visit the full Fort. * Plenty of parking for two/four wheelers and nominal fees for Fort and camera.

Visited Oct, 2022 and work done is really good. All the rooms are air-conditioned so it feels less tiresome. For an average person it would take ~2hrs to finish. Around 4hrs if go through everything in details. The only issue I felt was the sequence of the points to visit which is little confusing as well as make us walk more. It would be nice if they keep directional arrows for transitions.

Most interesting things to see in Surat : Surat Castle. It has many important history and data preserved in itself. The main thing about it is that Castle has an audio visual presentation of history and restoration. So we don't need any further guidance. Security guides us the way door to door. How Surat is and was prosperous we can imagine after watching the castle. Also you will find remains of history - coins, Notes, idols of Hindu deities, postage stamps, ivory jewellery from the museum. One must visit the Castle while in Surat.

Built by Muhammad Tughlaq back in 14th century, Old Fort of Surat was primarily used as a guard against the Bhils. This is among must-visit historical places in Gujarat as there’s inspiring legends awaiting you. However, currently the fort is under maintenance, it is suggested you confirm its opening with Gujarat tourism before planning a visit. Tapi River flowing by the monument makes the landscape more stunning, don’t forget to carry your cameras!

A great castle for the tourists to visit. The credit goes to Surat Municipal Corporation for an immaculate renovation work to keep the spirits and detailings of this fourteenth Century fort. The audio-visual show was very informative for the scholars as well as common visitors. The demonstrator and the security personnel are very cordial and apt at their jobs. Pleasant visits.

Really nice to see the restoration. Admission comes with a video presentation and access to all sorts of exhibits about Surat’s history. Most exhibits air conditioned. Clean washrooms. Great overall experience. Allot about two hours if you’re interested in history.

This is an old palace built on the river side. This is currently under renovation by government and hence closed for visitors. One can view this from side of heritage walk surat. There is issue of parking once vehicle so suggest to hire a cab. Nearby attractions include heritage walk, Riverside and fun rides.

This castle is temporarily closed due to work of renovation and opens after Diwali. And, when you call upon the given number on google then agent on other side may mislead you and would not talk to you interestingly. However, this castle contains some masterpieces (statutes, sculptures, etc) of the era of mughals. Thus Surat Castle looks good from the outer side but not enough to attract people but i hope it definitely excellent from inner side. You go and tell me what it contains really.

Surat Castle is very good historical place, well maintained with complete air conditioned rooms. Its audio visual part is highlight. The history of Surat fort is represented in detail. The story of its reconstruction is also good. Still work is under progress for part of ghe fort. And partly it is opened for public as museum.

One of the most popular heritage monuments of Surat, the Surat Castle dates back to the 16th century and was the most important defense measure adopted against the Portuguese. Also called the ÝOld Fort, this opulent monument sits on the banks of the Tapi River and is an example of exemplarily sturdy architecture.

If you love history especially of Surat & how the Mughals & Britishers impacted that place you can check out the castle. Renovation work has improved parts of the castle. And some good architecture & souvenirs can be seen. Plus they have a 10 minutes video which explains the history of the castle. Nice experience.

The Surat castle and fort is a historical place! Recently renovated by the Surat Municipal corporation, it starts with a movie and then a semi-guided tour of the place. The entire fort is converted into a museum! Ticket charges are rs 50 for child, 50 for senior citizen and 100 for adult. This place will a good two hours to visit so take your time. We saw old paintings, archeological artifacts, coins and stamp collection, old maps of Surat, etc. Photography inside the museum is not allowed but we can take pictures in the fort area.

The fortress is a renovated version of the centuries old Fort that was built by Kings. You have to take a ticket for entry (100/person). There are securities everywhere to direct you through the fort. You will be initially given an orientation of what you are going to see and the history behind it and they also walk you through the intense renovation process through a video, projected in an audiovisual room. There are a lot of exhibits and you walk through the different areas of the fort that was meant for specific purposes. Very picturesque for photography enthusiasts too. PS: Be ready to walk and climb a lot of stairs. May not be comfortable for elderly with walking difficulties. Not very wheelchair friendly acc. to my observation.

I can say that Surat Muncipal Corporation are doing amazing job of preserving the old heritage as good as possible. Tickets cost 40/- for adults and for photography they charge seperatly. The castle is still under renovation, but majority of the part is renovated. This castle is must to visit when you are in Surat. We were surprised by the amount of hard work and dedication the people have given to renovate this old heritage. Lots of old coins, furniture, court rooms and the rooms in which Kings used to live in those days you will get to experience here. And each and every rooms in this castle are kept in proper maintained temperature's to keep everything in good condition. Each and every process of renovation is displayed via photos in the rooms. You can also get to see a 15 mins. movie made specifically for the Castle. This room has very good speakers and also is fully air conditioned. Overall, the castle is still under renovation but once it is fully completed it will attract more tourist so they can experience the amazing history of Surat city.

Introduction The Surat castle is one of the ancient monuments of 16th century existing in the city and bears a significant relevance to its history. However, such a great fortification built to provide the citizens of Surat with an adequate defence against the attacks of the invaders seems to have been forgotten from the minds of the present generation. The Ahmedabad king Sultan Mahmood-III (1538-1554), who was very much annoyed by these frequent destructions of Surat, ordered for building a very strong castle and entrusted the work to Safi Agha, a Turkish soldier who had been ennobled with the title of Khudawand Khan. The work of building the castle was completed in 1546. After the capture of Surat by the emperor Akbar (1573) the fortress remained in the charge of commandants appointed from Delhi till it was seized by the Sidhi admiral of the Mugal fleet in 1751. The Sidhi did not hold the castle for long period, as it was captured by the English in 1759 with rest of the city. Though from the first practically independent, the English held the castle nominally under the Mugal. In token of this divided command, two flags waved from the castle walls, the English ensign on the south-west, and the Moorish standard on the south-east bastion. This practice was continued till, in 1842, on the death of the last of the nawabs of Surat, the English fleet was removed from the Tapi, and the Moorish standard taken down from the castle walls. Though, as a defence against any well-equipped enemy, they have long been useless, the castle buildings initially were being kept in repair, and until the year 1862, were garrisoned by a small body of European and native troops. In that year, as no longer required, the force was withdrawn, and the vacated rooms were made over for the accommodation of the various offices connected with the revenue and police departments, in whose occupation the castle has since remained. History Though in context of the identity of Surat in mediaeval times many views have been expressed by different historians, in all the historical narratives Surat has emerged as one of the major port of international importance on the map of the world trade. A Portuguese traveller named Barbosa during his visit to Gujarat in 1514 has described Surat as a city of great trade in all classes of merchandise, a very important seaport yielding a large revenue to the king, and frequented by many ships from Malabar and many other ports. Shortly before Barbosa was in Gujarat, Surat is said to have been burnt by the Portuguese in 1512. Surat reportedly suffered from a wholly unprovoked, and piratical raid, in 1530, a second time by the Portuguese under the leadership of Antonio da Silvaria. Though the assailants were opposed by a guard of 300 horses and 10000 foot, but at the first charge the defenders fled, and the town was taken and burnt. As they were still at the war with the Gujarat King, the Portuguese again burnt Surat in the next year, 1531. He was provided with substantial budget and was ordered to plan and build a very strong castle. Khudawand Khan initially selected three alternative sites for building the castle Village Tunki where presently a tomb of Marjan Shami is existing. 'Pani ni Bhit' area The bank of the river out of which the last alternative i.e. bank of the river was selected and finalised by the king. It has been reported that during construction stage the Portuguese made several attempts to prevent Khudawand Khan from completing the work both by bribery as well as by force failing which, they came to attack with several vessels armed with cannons, but could not succeed in preventing him from building the castle. He completed the construction of this castle in the year 1546.So that i need to more space for write review on this Castle but bye.

Surat Castle, or Surat Fort, is a 16th-century structure in the city of Surat. The Ahmedabad king Sultan Mahmood-III (1538-1554) ordered its construction to defend the city from the frequent attacks that had devastated it. He entrusted the work to Safi Agha, a Turkish soldier who had been ennobled with the title of Khudawand Khan. Worth seeing it, they tried to restore it in it's original condition, I can say yes it's done well. You will feel as if you are roaming in some different country, you will feel touch of Mogals, Portugal's, British architecture. Worth seeing.

Inside the fort, Surat attracts tourists like Tughlaq Dome, British Barracks, British Lifestyle Room, Dutch Lifestyle Room, Mughal Gallery, Armenium Gallery along with British Tea Room, Trade Gallery With this a lot is still going to be isolated in the fort by Surat Manpa. This fort, which is developing in stages, is becoming a modern place to see the glorious history and heritage of Surat. Surat Castle is a hidden gem! Its lace-like design sets a unique vibe, and it's small on the outside but impressively big on the inside. Discover Surat's rich history here – it's a must-visit! Surat Castle is undeniably captivating, but it's worth noting that only the Mughal flag is displayed, not the Indian flag, which some may find disappointing. Nonetheless, it's still a historical treasure worth exploring.🇮🇳

I have visited it recently. Selfies and self video is not permitted. When you enter you will be shown a documentary about this fort and historical importance of it. How SMC restored it needs a huge round of applause. One can visit with family and friends. And it will be very beneficial for students if any educational institution arrange tour of this fort. Must visit.

Have been visiting the city of Surat since childhood but for the first time visited the recently renovated historic Surat castle, which is a monument of 16th century. It withstood the attacks from the Portuguese, Mughal and English. Surat was a major trading port during medievial times and is still a strong cloth and diamond market ! Surat castle has regained lost it's grace and pride post renovation.

A historical land fort is having good fortification, bastions and many monuments. This fort is located on bank of river 'Tapi'. The historical English, Dutch and Armenian cemeteries near this fort. Surat Castle, or Surat Fort is a 16th-century structure, The Ahmedabad king Sultan Mahmood-III (1538-1554) ordered its construction to defend the city from the frequent attacks that had devastated it. He entrusted the work to Safi Agha, a Turkish soldier who had been ennobled with the title of Khudawand Khan.

One of the few historic place in Surat. Earlier SMC use this castle as their office and couple of important offices were here but now a days SMC shift all there offices from the castle and started to completely renovate it and try to restore Castle originality. First phase of restoration has been done and they really did awesome job and soon going to finish rest of the part. Once all surrounded area completed the complete choke area became heritage Square. One of the must visit place.

Between 1540 and 1546, Sultan Mahmud III had this castle built with extra strength for protection against Portuguese raids. It is now filled with government offices, but you can go up to the top for a marvelous view of the city and the Tapi river. By Road Surat lies 267 km from Ahmedabad, 131km from Vadodara, and 297 km from Mumbai. Bus stations, both ST and private, are on the eastern edge of the city.

It's not maintained in a proper way. It doesn't look like a castle now because of bad reconstructions. It should be maintained seriously by our authorities to protect our heritage.

Surprisingly well restored and informative monument. Congratulations to ASI and SMC for a job well done. Its a must visit for history lovers and for extensive historical information about Surat and its past. A very well made 16-min documentary is showcased in one of the vaults. Recommended that you see the film before the commencement of your walk. Air conditioning in all the display rooms makes the visit a very pleasant one.

A very wonderful place in Surat , well explained history , paintings, museums, stone , Vincent & vintage gallery ... it took me 2 hrs to visit the complete Castle ...with the edge at the river ... ticket cost 100 Rs per head . photography of the museum is allowed , selfie and human photos not allowed as a part of privacy. 15 mins video is shown for understanding the history of Surat .... in some areas selfie is allowed... fancy cups , royal dinning hall , exclusive 125 Ganpati Bappa idols ..,great collection of currency. Must visit..
