On a hill 150 meters above Palmyra stands the impressive and robust Fakhr-al-Din al-Ma'ani Castle. The castle was most probably built in the 13th century by the Mamluks and named after the Druze emir Fakhr ed-Dine II who expanded his local semi-independent state from Northern Lebanon to Palmyra in the 16th century. From this reasonably well-preserved castle you have a beautiful view of the ruins of Antique Palmyra. It is also the best location to enjoy the sunset.

Magnificent, I have been to Palmyra 3 times. The last time in 2012. I am deeply saddened knowing such beauty is being destroyed not only in Palmyra but all of beautiful Syria.

The castle is thought to have been built by the Mamluks in the 13th century on a high hill overlooking the historic site of Palmyra, and is named for the Druze emir Fakhr-al-Din II, who extended the Druze domains to the region of Palmyra during the 16th century.

Syria, a country located in the Middle East, has a rich history and culture that dates back to ancient civilizations, including the Babylonian, Assyrian, Phoenician, Persian, Islamic, and many more. One of the most notable features of Syria is its vast array of ancient artifacts, temples, and historical sites. Among them, the city of Palmyra, also known as Tadmur, stands out as one of the most important and impressive ancient cities in the world. Palmyra is home to numerous historic and archaeological sites, including the famous Temple of Bel, the Roman theater, and the Palace of Princess. These sites have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and are a testament to the cultural significance of Syria and the Middle East. Despite the challenges of political instability and conflict in the region, the Syrian government and various organizations have made great efforts to preserve and restore these historic landmarks. This preservation work is crucial to ensuring the protection of Syria's cultural heritage, and to showcasing the rich history of this region to future generations. In addition to Palmyra, Syria is home to many other beautiful cities and ancient sites, including Homs, Latakia, Bosra Sham, and many more. These locations boast a variety of impressive structures, including towers, castles, palaces, mosques, churches, and other breathtaking buildings. Despite the ongoing conflicts in the region, Syria remains a treasure trove of ancient history and cultural significance. The preservation and restoration of its historic sites is essential to protecting and celebrating the legacy of this fascinating and important region.
