Maarat
al-Numan
Museum
or
Khan
Murad
Pasha:
The
lines
of
history
intersect
to
produce
for
us
a
wonderful
building
that
is
considered
an
architectural
jewel
in
the
crown
of
Arab
civilization.
This
building
is
distinguished
by
the
splendor
and
historical
depth
of
the
city
of
Maarat
al-Numan,
which
has
kept
pace
with
history
since
its
inception.
This
facility
was
built
by
Murad
Çelebi,
Secretary
of
the
Royal
Treasury,
shortly
after
the
Ottomans
entered
Syria
in
the
year
974
AH
1595
AD.
The
purpose
of
the
building
was
a
rest
stop,
a
hotel,
and
a
feeding
hospice
for
travelers,
wayfarers,
and
others,
as
stated
in
the
endowment
text
above
the
arch
of
the
main
entrance
to
the
khan.
The
text
reads:
(He
built
This
is
an
oasis
for
the
sake
of
God,
the
protector
of
the
books,
the
Royal
Diwan,
Murad
Çelebi.
If
a
poor
man
or
any
animal
is
rich,
then
the
curse
of
God,
the
angels,
and
people
will
be
upon
him
in
various
ways
in
the
year
974
AH.)
The
building
as
a
whole
is
so
carefully
crafted
and
meticulous
that
the
viewer
thinks
it
is
made
of
a
single
stone,
as
if
its
builder
had
just
finished
building
it,
and
in
order
for
this
charitable
urban
project
to
be
delivered
and
fulfill
the
purpose
for
which
it
was
created.
The
builder
endowed
it
with
numerous
buildings
and
water
constructions
as
a
wide
endowment
for
him
and
a
palace
for
him
that
would
meet
his
expenses
and
overflow,
namely
eighteen
zūra
(orchards),
twenty-two
water
mills
in
the
Orontes
Basin,
thirty-five
watering
water
fountains,
the
Al-Farzul
(Al-Haraki)
farm
east
of
Maarat,
and
a
large
khan,
Khan
Al-Subul,
on
the
Hama
road.
-
Aleppo.
It
also
contains
an
archaeological
library
dating
back
to
the
Islamic
era,
called
the
Ibn
al-Shihna
Library,
which
is
a
calligraphy
and
archaeological
library.
