An
overview
at
the
prevailing
tourism
activity
suggests
that
Kashmir
has
a
vast
and
as
of
yet
unexplored
tourism
potential.
A
state
of-the-art
multipurpose
centre
which
provided
information
to
a
visitor
on
all
aspects
of
tourism
in
the
state
was
required.
The
previous
tourist
reception
centre
which
was
burnt
in
2005
was
serving
the
visitors
in
quite
an
effective
manner.
Following
the
fire,
the
Department
of
Tourism
proposed
to
shift
the
location
of
the
reception
centre
from
the
original
site
to
Nowgam
and
acquired
about
100
kanals
of
land
in
Nowgam,
which
falls
in
the
District
Budgam
for
the
reconstruction
of
a
tourist
reception
centre.
The
site
is
located
near
the
recently
built
railway
station
at
Nowgam.
The
site
for
the
proposed
Tourist
Centre
is
at
a
comfortable
distance
from
the
airport
and
the
main
city.
The
Proposed
Tourist
Reception
Centre
is
envisaged
as
a
“Gateway
Building”
that
will
provide
Information,
Lodging,
Shopping
and
Restaurant
facility.
The
T.R.C
will
reflect
its
function
and
represent
architectural
heritage
of
the
Kashmir
region.
Integrate
suitably
with
the
traditional
architectural
traditions
of
Kashmir.
Is
of
an
appropriate
design
and
scale
to
fulfill
the
multiple
functions
associated
with
its
role.
The
building
is
designed
on
the
basis
of
environmental
friendly,
sustainable
architecture.
The
design
also
envisages
the
use
of
passive
solar
heating
to
compliment
the
lighting
requirements.
Care
has
been
taken
to
make
the
building
user-friendly
and
therefore
incorporates
features
such
as
ramps
etc.
for
use
of
physically
challenged
visitors.
The
Tourist
Reception
Centre
at
Nowgam
will
also
be
designed
as
a
cohesive
unit
having
all
the
facilities
like
the
general
tourist
info
block,
guest
accommodation,
restaurant
and
the
shopping
kiosks
well
connected
to
each
other
like
a
web.
The
premises
shall
offer
free
and
easy
access
to
all
the
blocks.
The
tourist
reception
centre
will
have
adequate
parking
facility.
The
guest
accommodation
shall
have
around
50
rooms,
out
of
which
10
are
single
bedded
and
rest
are
double
bedded.
A
separate
dormitory
which
can
accommodate
20
people
is
also
proposed
to
be
constructed
elsewhere
near
the
hotel
block.
