I heard this was a posh department store and I’ve been here a few times. I saw some small plates I like and the price was quite a bargain. It took me some time but I managed to find a member of staff to help my purchase. I checked with the lady if each plate cost $200 and she said yes. I asked to buy 4. Then it took a long time for 2 members of staff to find those plates for me. I was told those I saw on the shelf were the last 4 so I agreed to purchase them. Two members of staff assisted me to the counter to complete my purchase. One of them was wrapping the plates and putting them into the boxes. She said it would take a while so I went to walk around. After 10 minutes, I went back. Both of them were serving other customers and left my plates unattended. When they realised I was standing there waiting, another lady began to wrap my plates again. After a long time when I was able to pay for my purchase, the till said each plate cost $350, not $200 as it was shown on the shelf. One member of staff went to check. She told me that other customers misplaced the price tags so the correct price was hidden somewhere. I felt embarrassed not to pay for it after they spent so much time wrapping them even most of the time they were serving other customers. I find this shop was not very organised and it doesn’t respect the customers for first come first serve, and they don’t recognise they own mistake of misplacing the price tag. It was not a good experience of shopping there and I don’t think I would like to go there again. I also found the staff there couldn’t communicate with foreigners in English very well. I observe some odd conversations (half English and half Mandarin Chinese) between the two members of staff and a foreign man.

An interesting place! Liked so much that we came back repeatedly to check out the store over and over again. it is full of hand crafted handicrafts and artifacts. I took the opportunity to read up on the rich history of the building as well . There is a café at the top of the building for us to rest our tired legs as well.

A very unique place littered with cute and unique souvenirs! The mall was built over 100 years ago, and inside this seemingly old building is a large and clean mall with many small shops. Many local artists sell their crafts here, and there are many unique items. You can also take the ancient lift to 6F to take photos with the 碰饼. Interesting experience!

It’s a pleasant surprise as I did not research in depth except it’s an old place riddled with bullet holes. The design and finishing of the interior was superfluous with the top floor being the best of all. Just go and discover

(Translated by Google) When you come to Tainan, you must come and visit the Lin Department Store. Take the elevator to the top floor to see the torii gate. Nostalgic thinking of ancient must-visit attractions. Spend an afternoon with a cup of coffee. (Original) 來台南一定要來走一趟林百貨。坐一下電梯到頂樓看鳥居。懷舊思古必遊景點。喝杯咖啡度過一個下午。

Great place to visit for some local arts and crafts. Found some truly delightful items. There is a restaurant upstairs that has great food (curry) and shaved ice to combat the heat. If you like dhopping for unique gift items about Taiwan or Tainan you should not miss this place!

Interesting building that I chanced upon while making my way downtown. Great 5 storey department store that sells a variety of indie stuff as well as Tainan delicacies. As it's name suggests, there are some Japanese roots to this place and that Shinto shrine is actually built at the top of the building and provides spectacular views of the buildings around.

Is a really beautiful place to visit. Although is far from the train station but is really worth a visit. The building itself is old and well maintained coupled with the 60's and 70's interior design in the store definitely stunning. Bought many postcards for my friends and sent to my friends overseas. You can buy souvenir as birthday present, wedding gifts or just gifts for friends and family too.

(Translated by Google) A quaint department store, if you don’t pay attention, you will think that the department store has such a tune. In the past, this place was a glorious and glorious shopping site. After the war, the personnel are not only the buildings and nearby buildings, which can make you and me think about life. , Especially with historical sites, the fascination and understanding of the age level. Very cool old-world Japanese department store that’s stood on this site through World War Two and still shows bullet holes and signs of the war. Very cool hand crafted items and a very cool vibe. Totally worth a visit with great views from the roof and even its own Shinto shrine.

Totally worth venturing in. Take the stairs for an interesting feel while pass through the multiple floors of specialty shops. The whole place has a very home-like feel. Stop at the top at the cozy coffee shop.

We had some dessert on the 5th floor and it was not that impressive. The ice cream wt the brown sugar pastry was very plain, the coffee wt cinnamon was a bit too sweet and the lemon cake was so dry and not too appetising, only quite pretty presentation. The things sold there too nothing too interesting. I am only amazed it's a historical site.

Great place to buy souvenirs and food! Take a cab here. Remember to go to the roof to see the scenery and souvenirs. There is a lift available for elderly who cannot climb the stairs. Takes about 1-1.5 hours. Have a nice dessert/ coffee if you are tired at the 5th floor!

Kind of retro Japanese vibes. Not cheap but a nice view from the rooftop. Once again, clear evidence of the Japanese colonial presence and its footprint in the beautiful then capital during the period of the Japanese colonization.

Many people come here to just take photos because you are literally transported to the good old Shanghai days with a nostalgia feel. Nice place to snap some nice photos for memories but generally the prices of items here are on the steep side. But they do feature unique stuff here though. Worth a visit.

Interesting to visit as a historical landmark. As a department store they carry curated brands, sold at quite a marked up price. Hence, good for sight seeing, not so much for shopping since you can find the same brands at other department stores for a lower price.

A historical building where you can go in and shopping. It’s an old department store opened in 1930s. They sell some culture, design, food and souvenirs. They have an old elevator can take you to 5th floor. There are dessert stores and a platform at the top to see the view. If you are interested in knowing their stories. They also provide brochures in Mandarin, Japanese and English. If you like history and design. It’s a place worth to spend one or two hours. Since it’s an old building, The AC at the top floors is not that strong. They provide restrooms and the entire building is not really wheelchair friendly.

A great place to visit, cafe on top floor was cute, historic and worth going to even for a look. Site is of 2nd department store in Taiwan, opened by Japanese and they have kept the historic charm of the building.

Very unique place selling very unique artisan goods. It’s called a departmental stall but not one that you expect. It’s a rebranded, rejuvenated old building fully air conditioned. A mixed of old and new. You can find all kinds of artistic souvenirs and local delights in this building. Very nice cafe at the very top floor.

I always make a stop here when in Tainan, so many interesting things to be seen. Lot of special food stuffs and lots of other interesting things to be found. Coffee and tea can be had in the roof top cafe. Well worth the time to experience a different era of Taiwan.

The Hayashi Department Store is located near Tainan Art Museum Building 2, where you can walk and digest after eating. The transportation is very convenient. There are many Tainan gifts on the first floor, and there are many cultural and creative goods upstairs. The top floor part has a view of Tainan, which is a good attraction.

Build in 1932 a 5 storey departmental store during the Japanese rule in Taiwan . There is a Shinto Shrine at the 6th and observation deck. You can also see the damage to the building during the US bombing in WWII. The building was restored nearly a decade ago and not to be miss if you are keen in history architecture. Cool place to shop and chillax with friends.

Touristic place but good retro atmosphere. Japanese 1930's Music playlist in the store is quite interesting.

  • 5/5 Steph B. 1 year ago on Google
The store which was built in Japanese style during the Japanese era in the 1930s is really nicely conserved from in and outside. As soon as you step in you feel like stepping back in time. Nice conserved details from the well kept concrete/stone stairs with their brass edging or the toilet doors which look like still original. The sold products on every level are a wife range of Japanese or Taiwanese products from the higher quality range of design, art, Decoration, jewellery or clothing. If you're in Tainan I highly recommend a visit. Not to forget the shrine on the roof which can also be visited.

  • 2/5 Tomas M. 1 year ago on Google
I can't believe this is considered an attraction in Tainan. The place is nice, but it's just a store. An overpriced store. If you are looking for snacks to bring as souvenirs, you can find them. Other than that, you'll find overpriced art craft and not much else. If you like window shopping then yes, it's a good place. If you are on a tight schedule, just skip this. There are much better places to visit in Tainan.

Although there are many kinds of cultural and creative leather products, the price is too high in terms of cultural and creative positioning. The first department store built by Japanese when they were still here. Back then, Tainan was still the major capital and center of Politics and economic. Hayashi department store was the first one department store in Tainan, the second one in Taiwan in 1932. It built when Taiwan ruled by Japanese. After WW2, the department store closed until 2014. Don't miss the elevator. It probably is one of the oldest elevators in Taiwan.

Love the art deco design of this old Japanese department store, the way it's preserved feels like a museum or art gallery. I like walking through the different floors up to the amazing rooftop that still has a Shinto shrine! If you need to rest your feet the coffee shop is usually quiet with nice views. A must visit for Tainan.
