Pretty impressive structure with the back courtyard. Really neat to see the worshippers praying. There is a big fireplace in the back to burn the paper money intended for the family on the other world.

One of the four ancient temples in this area with about 400 years history at time of this visit. Traditional Chinese temple design, good place to visit. Temple is Taoist as base, small Buddhist section at side of temple. Similar to lots of Chinese temples.

A particularly interesting temple with a number of fine paintings, stone tablets and bas relief sculpture, some dating back as far as the Ming Dynasty. Should you find yourself in the neighborhood, inquire at Share House Cafe nearby if you are interested in getting a terrific and scholarly overview of its history and the symbolism and meaning of the artwork contained therein.

(Translated by Google) Located in the West Central District of Tainan City, Taiwan, the Big Tianhou Temple is a temple dedicated to Mazu and a national monument of the Republic of China Da Tianhou Temple, formerly known as Dongning Tianfei Palace, is located in the West Central District of Tainan City, Taiwan. It is a temple dedicated to Mazu. It is also a national monument of the Republic of China. The original site of the temple was the residence of King Ningjing, the residence of King Ningjing Zhu Shugui of the Ming Dynasty. It was later converted into a Mazu Temple after the residence of King Ningjing. The old local chronicles mostly record that it was changed to Mazu Temple after Shi Lang entered Taiwan in 1684. However, recent scholars It points out that there was a Tianfei Palace in Dongning during the Ming and Zheng period, and the object of the residence of King Ningjing was the abbot at that time. Datianhougong is the first Mazu temple built by the government and included in the official ceremony. It also has an important position in Taiwan’s Fucheng. It is the Fucheng Gong Temple. When Datianhougong holds Mazu welcoming activities, it can span various temples in the Fucheng Funds raised in the world are known as the "Tongcheng Tiger". In addition, when celebrations are held in various temples in Fucheng, the No. 1 sedan chair will be reserved for Mazu of the Great Tianhou Temple. In addition, because the Grand Tianhou Palace was originally the residence of King Ningjing and also had an important symbolic status in politics, Shi Lang accepted Zheng Keyu’s surrender here and erected a "platform memorial monument." Liu Yongfu, the second president of the Democratic State of Taiwan, regarded it as "President" House". Though it's named as "grand" but not really. In our opinion, the name mainly is more representative of it being the oldest or at least one of the original mazu temple in Tainan. Can see it went thru much renovation over the years. The main temple housed the resident deity Mazu. The annex is a Buddhist temple, quite signature in Taiwan where the Taoist and Buddhist shares the same complex.

Great experience at this temple thst is relatively close to city center. You can make a small donation and get joss sticks, and joss papers as well as some traditional prayer cakes. The place is run by temple staff and volunteers and the volunteers are really helpful in providing guidance on what to do as well.

Besides being a beautiful temple it gives you the possibility of understanding a little more on how prayers should be made and the gods and goddesses involved. Seeing people pray you can almost feel the holiness around and across this place. That's why it shouldn't be run at any time by a bunch of little kids, even if they're volunteering.

Mazu is the guardian deity of the sea, and a grand festival is held on the birthday of March 23 of the lunar calendar. "Clairvoyance" and "Shunfu ear" are on both sides of Mazu. Originally, these two were not good people, but they came to be able to do this after being inspired by Mazu. Mazu's actions are helped with his eyesight and keen hearing that overlooks even a thousand miles. While the Temple is a Taoist temple which worships Goddess of the Seas, Mazu [or Matsu], it also worships numerous Buddhist deities. The Temple has beautiful Chinese calligraphy writing on the wall and most of calligraphy writing are related to traditional Chinese teachings of the moral virtues. The Temple is well maintained, clean and neat, and the staffs are friendly for helping visitors. . The Temple does provide free worship incense and other worship materials t the worshippers.

A large, rather complex temple (for me anyway) with multiple halls and level and deities. I didn't realise it was a Taoist temple. There are also dedicated alters for prayers for marriage and also childbirth. The detail and intricate prayer halls are amazing.

The most interesting thing I found in the temple - a massive 求签桶!Each divination lot (签) is like a meter long so I don’t think anyone could actually shake the “tumbler” until the lot falls out. It kinda spoils the fun of divination actually but wells this is how they do it here in Tainan.

Just another temple to visit and appreciate the intrinsic designs. Enjoyed the instagram worthy door of one of the temples you can see while passing along the alley going to Grand Mazu Temple. Don't forget to grab a wintermelon tea just in front of the temple, you won't miss it because of the people lining up.

At that time, I only thought that it was a flashy temple, but later I learned that it was a national monument. I'm glad I kept my hands together. In Japan, we sometimes see flashy religious buildings in Taiwan, just as we see temples and shrines here and there. I thought that we must leave the historical value that conveys the role that religion has played to the next generation. (Translated by Google) The gate of the temple was opened at 23:00 on New Year’s Eve. The family lined up in front of the temple at around ten o’clock in the evening. The weather was cold and windy. The children were asked to receive a safe guard. They said that there were only 108 so they lined up at the scene very early. They were very happy to finally open the temple gate. It's time to receive the defensive. When we arrived, a young and fat staff member kept asking us to prepare sesame oil money. If he didn't give it, he wouldn't give us. The children and adults who used to receive the red envelope jewelry are very happy and joyful, but this year I feel that I have lost the meaning of queuing for the New Year. It is more like a disguised feeling of earning money. It feels very bad. I think this should be artificial and it has nothing to do with the gods. If this is the case, go to other temples. If you are happy, people will not act like this! (Translated by Google) I was born and raised in Tainan, and Tainan, which is said to be the birthplace of Taiwanese culture, is a place with a long history, just like Kyoto in Japan, where we, Tainan people, are proud of it. However, as Taiwanese always say (Tainan culture, Tainan culture), I think that there are very few people who really understand the true Tainan culture. The reason is that Chihkan Tower and Anping Old Fort, which represent Tainan culture, are well known not only in Taiwan but also in the world of scholars, but realistically speaking, they were built by foreigners and are cultures of other countries. I think. Speaking of culture, those old things and things known to the world are only recognized by foreigners, and it can be said that the culture is recognized by the inhabitants of that place. Besides, I think the true Tainan culture is our way of life. The hearts of Tainan people are long and thin like a river, the scent of mausoleums, the scent of rice, and the city we walk in is blessed with sunsets, and the nostalgia reminds us of the past while listening to the stories of older students. .. Living quietly like this Tainan Grand Mazu Temple, which has no name in our culture, it is the warm heart in the hearts of each Tainan person.
