兌悅門建於道光十五年(西元一八三五年),翌年元月完工,是當時所建的三座城門之一,因位於西方,屬於八卦中的兌方,故名兌悅;又因城門基座用老古石砌造,所以俗稱老古石甕城。
門高約4公尺,厚3公尺。城門洞寬3公尺,上做半圓拱形,用紅磚砌築。門座內側設有踏階,供登城之用。兌悅門為當時府城大西門的外城。當時與小西門的外城「奠坤門」和小北門的外「拱乾門」,共同築成一道外城,抗禦海盜騷擾。
兌悅門幾乎為外表白灰粉刷面內為紅磚造,臺度為硓時,而其他八門均為石造砌石,一圈圓拱貼石片,上為垛牆及鎗口才為砌紅磚。其他部份的城牆為砌磚或石塊勾縫為石灰、黏土、砂、牡蠣殼粉末拌合而成。
日治時期以後,由於都市發展,大多數城門漸遭拆除,惟有兌悅門、門內的「修造老古石街路頭碑記」及石獅爺仍然屹立,是至今臺灣府城中惟一仍在穿越使用的城門,也是因應滄海桑田的情勢變化而使府城向外擴展的具體明證。
