Cozy hotel, stylish, with the best features of tradition, modern though. The room was just huge and the family bus, amazing

Fantastic stay! We stay 2 nights in this hotel and wish we able to stay 2 more nights. We stay in Japanese style room with a mini garden view. Special credit to the reception young guy with a spectacles. He provide such great service to us. I really hope we will be back to Takayama and stay at here again.

Highly satisfied!! Out of a lot of hotels in the area, we’re glad we picked the right one. The hotel is very new as of February 2023. It’s located only 10-min walk from Takayama station. If you travel by car, there are couple slots available nearby for 1000jpy per day (pay at hotel). Nice and sleek modern Japanese design. We love their hinoki amenities so much. All electric appliance are top-of-the-class. Helpful and polite staff. Recommend for anyone travel to Takayama.

Fantastic location. Comfortable bedding. We chose a room w the cedar wood bath, and enjoyed that tremendously. Service is unobtrusive. We’d recommend this place for families w older kids, couples and business travelers.

A really high quality hotel! The staff are super friendly, accommodating, and thoughtful. The manager is really friendly and I recommend chatting with him-- he was one of the highlights of my trip! The rooms are large and feel "nice," as in the furniture, beds, and bathroom all feel sturdy and new and modern. The in-room amenities are also high quality. There is also a nice lobby area with free tea (and nice quality tea at that.) The hotel is quite small so it never felt crowded or noisy which was also nice. I could never hear the people in the room next to me, for exampke. There are two bath tubs you can rent upon checking in and i highly recommend going at least once! The only drawback to this hotel is the lack of breakfast. If you're OK with western style breakfast there is a coffee shop in town with cheap breakfast and good coffee. I really felt welcomed and comfortable at this hotel. When I return to Takayama I hope to stay here again!!! Thank you!

A beautiful new facility that’s very close to old town and is fully equipped with all of the essentials. The staff went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. I would definitely come back and would recommend!

Wonderful experience. For a family of 5, this hotel suited us perfectly as rooms were spacious and had a unique design and atmosphere. Hotel staff size was small but was very respectful and helpful

Small but functional hotel, well situated 7 mins away from Takayama train station. We had very nice stay at this hotel. Here I want to especially thank to Makino san for his incredible kindness and smile. He helped us in every way possible, even the way we are not expected. There is no enough words I can add more. Machiya hotel, you should know that Makino san is an outstanding person. Thank you again for your welcome

The hotel at first seemed great. Service was great, location good and the design and architecture of the hotel was fantastic as well. We were very happy we decided to stay here. That changed soon... Shortly after checking in we discovered a couple small centipede like insects on our bed. It didn't seem a big deal at first but then they appeared all over our room and found over a dozen. Notifying the front desk they offered to change our room which we eventually decided to do... Another one of the insects was found in the lobby and also another in the bathroom of our new room. It was in a separate building to the original of our first room so it seemed like they were throughout the hotel. We ended up staying the two nights in somewhat paranoid fashion. There was no offer to compensate us for the trouble or upgrade our room. The second room perhaps had a higher cost attached to it as it had two beds but we had preferred our first room with a king sized bed. If it weren't for this disappointing turn of events we would have rated the hotel very highly.

This is an absolutely gorgeous hotel with very comfortable and clean room, and thoughtful amenities. The lounge area is a calming oasis, with soothing music, coffee and nice selection of tea. Location is close to train station and short walk to old streets. The staff are friendly and helpful, and made our stay a happy one.

Loved our experience at the Machiya Hotel! The owner was kind, service was excellent, the rooms were clean, interestingly-designed and well-equipped. It was evident a lot of thought & care has gone into designing not only the hotel but also the experience. Would recommend this hotel to anyone exploring Takayama or the Gifu region of Japan. :)

Wonderful Japanese-style boutique hotel. The suite was spacious, clean, and comfortable. There were two queen-sized Western beds and also traditional Japanese mats that one could opt to use if desired or if more than 4 people are staying. Large Japanese-style shower room with tub. High-quality in-room amenities. I loved the Balmuda electric kettle and individual pour-over coffee packs. The breakfast (additional charge) was delicious. It is located a ~10-minute walk from the old town. What stood out most is the level of service. We needed to stay an extra night due to a typhoon. Our room was not available, but the staff offered two rooms for the price of one. Then, in the morning, they asked whether it would be okay if they put us in their villa (Machiya Hanare) instead! As stated in my review for that property, it was spectacular. The staff really went above and beyond. Very highly recommended!!!

Beautiful, tasteful hotel very conveniently located near the old town of Takayama and the station. The interiors are stunning and the room was very comfortable and spacious. I would have given a better rating only that the room (202) was located above the exterior air conditioning units so there was a constant hum during the night and my partner slept poorly as a result. In addition, the beds weren’t made or coffee cups changed which I think is not up to standard for a hotel of this price range. While I understand that they are trying to be more sustainable in not changing bed linens, there could be a bit more effort in making up the rooms. The free tea and coffees from the lounge area were a nice touch as were the loaner umbrellas.

We arrived around 11 and were able to leave our luggage with the front staff I wasn’t able to get his name but he was above and beyond, he got our luggage and also helped us book our bath, we then went to explore Takayama which is a beautiful city and on the way back we realized we needed some coins to wash our clothes at the hotel, which the front staff was again able to help us by swapping our notes with 100¥ coins The accommodations were super clean and neat as well extremely comfortable and the bath was extremely good and warm we took the hinoki one Our room also had viewing to a private japanease garden which added to the amazing experience Will definitely come back if I visit Takayama again thank you!
