Very difficult to find a cafe shop before 8:00am in Takayama,And this is a delicious coffee shop with excellent service! The owner and staff is kind and helpful. We had breakfast with ice coffee ,Cappuccino and hot dog - all tasty! They give you a yummy little cookie with your coffee. This is good suggestions to visit Takayama and go to this shop to take a break for coffee .

Coffee Don is a true gem. They are on their third (maybe fourth?) generation. Founded in 1951! This is a no-frills, blast from the past with true character. The owners are extremely nice, the service is top notch and the coffee, well- is perfect. Also, the vanilla ice cream is phenomenal. What a terrific place to sit down in the afternoon and take in the day. Thanks Coffee Don- you rock!

Nice cosy and busy place. Very friendly service just run by two elderly folks. They take pride in every cup the prepare. Hence, may not be fast in service but the wait is absolutely worth! All customers don’t seem to be in a hurry - a true japanese culture. Nice ambience with soft music! Very old school with small tables and chairs. Place can get pretty busy at about 9.30am. Worth the visit and definitely with return to Cafe Don! It reminds me that it is important to make every moment in life matter! I am enjoying every moment here! Thank you folks!

Absolutely loved this place. It has such a old diner feel. English menu is included and has more options now than the current photo online but I was not allowed to take photos. Coffee and toast can easily be made vegan by asking for no dairy. I highly recommend the gingerbread latte. The most delicious latte I’ve ever had! Lovely stop, nice and warm on a cold and rainy day.

Apparently this place has been around for a long time, and it’s still keeping that old school vibe intact. Super friendly owner/staff and very accommodating. The coffee was excellent and the cheesecake was unlike any I’ve had (a mix between a sponge cake and cheesecake). Really a cool spot to just sit and relax. They also refilled my coffee while I sat, which may be a first in Japan!

We have visited Coffee Don a few times in the last few years and it’s still our number one cafe and coffee spot in town. They open early, the music, the vibes are immaculate and over the years it has not changed. The egg sando is delicious, so are the various toasts. Love the gingerbread latte and their coffees come with a speculoos cookie. Service is also great. Please stay open forever so we can continue to come back for years to come!

Cosy little cafe in Takayama. It's very crowded despite early in the morning. Limited seats but ambiance is nice. Their set meal consists of coffee and a locally made bun. Price is very reasonable. Will definitely pop in this place again in future.

After our morning visit to the outdoor Market, we came to coffee Don for our breakfast. This is an interesting shop with nice nostalgic feeling. It's been around since 1951, according to the owner. Coffee Don is an old style Coffee shop. Decor is back to the 80s style. A small little eatery that serves mainly light food like sandwiches and drinks. Located along the shopping street of Takayama, its not difficult to locate. We tried the Open Sandwich and toast set. Both were great, toast was a bit plain though... Ambience was full marks for me...the nostalgic style with slow jazz music in the background. Price,..not the cheapest sandwiches but for the experience, it was alright. Service was not too bad. They were efficient and approachable and tried comm in Eng with foriegners. But I must add seats were quite uncomfortable so don't expect to be sitting around for a long time. Space is also rather crammy... By 10am, almost all of the seats were occupied. So come early.

It's established since 1951. The coffee is the best I have ever had in my life- strong ☕ (American espresso is weaker). I ordered Vienna Coffee and their freshly made doughnut with sugar icing and cinnamon. Absolutely delicious! The staff is super friendly and speaks English. They also have an English menu. Highly recommend this charming old establishment after shopping at old town.

We came here two days in a row for breakfast. We had fruit crepes, ham toast, apple pie, cappuccino, strong coffee (the best I've had a long time). All fresh, so delicious, and filling. We had We're sad to not get to come back a third time to try more food. The staff was all attentive and so kind. Thank you for the lovely memories!

The oldest and most wonderful coffee shop in Takayama. It’s owned and staffed by a family who makes incredible coffee, tea and sweets. It has the feel of a mid twentieth century cafe as if you’ve been transported back in time. The doughnut is easily the best I’ve ever had anywhere in the world. It’s an in-house recipe and sooo good. To the owners, thank you for such wonderful service! You are very kind and we will always remember you!

Beautiful family owned coffee shop with delicious treats and drinks. The cheese onion toast exceeded our expectations. The chocolate cake was perfectly moist and rich. The coffee was beautifully prepared and served. What really put this place over the top was their kind and welcoming service. One of the workers even approached us on the street later that same day with a bag of treats! Wow, never have I ever seen such kindness and hospitality! Please go here, you will not be disappointed!

Amazing place!! The desserts are absolutely delicious and they’re homemade. I got the pudding and gingerbread latte. Both of them were amazing. My boyfriend got the cheesecake and he said it was sensational. The staff was incredible as well. The atmosphere was warm and cozy. I wish I lived closer so I could go all the time!

Loooove this place! The music is perfection. The chocolate cake is just heavenly! I had the cafe au lait with rum which was appropriate for the 5C weather outside. The service is excellent. The old couple who runs it are just too kind and too sweet 🥰

Hello from Singapore! I enjoyed my breakfast in this old school Cafe. Service was prompt and courteous. The toast was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside and tasted really great! Coffee was a dark roasted bean which I find accompanied the toast rather well. Really love the personal touches of the decor by the owner. You could feel that this cafe has a soul and an extension of the owner. However I must say the music was a little too intensive for me but that's not going to spoil my experience!

Oldest cafe in Takayama town, opened in 1951 lives up to its hype. Loved the coffee and soup I had here, crafted with care and the service is great. Has a long history to its name and definitely worth your time. Liked the old setting.

What a fantastic coffee shop. Traditional, family run, friendly and most of all the food and drinks are delicious. You should try the homemade Japanese Cheesecake which is a an original recipe from their grandfather.

The hot grape juice is from another universe! It comes with some fresh lemon juice that elevates it to the next dimension:O Apple pie was on point, cappuccino warms our soul too. They provide warm towels to clean your face and hands, just the kind of service that makes touring on a rainy afternoon all the more bearable. There's English menu here as well. Quaint little shop along the main street that's easy to find.

This cafe is a wee gem. The most kind, generous and friendly service, superb out of this world cakes and donuts and yummiest cheese toast. We were hungry and bought heaps so sampled lots. Donuts best I’ve had in my life. Great coffee. Beautiful quaint atmosphere and cheap. Review from three kiwis 😊

Think chunky thick cut shokupan slathered in melting cheese, a swipe of mustard, bacon ,egg and pops of cucumber and tomato. Even thicker cut shokupan dripping with melted butter, with your choice of jam, honey and marmalade. Banana shake is legit. Apple pie is great. Hot choc is delish (whipped cream on top anyone?) And the service is attentive, with a warm atmosphere and jazz tones playing softly in the background. Ah. Perfect. You do not want to miss this gem in Takayama.

The cafe was really cozy and it had a nostalgic feeling with the dark wooden interior. Highly recommend the cappuccino and the hot sandwich.

Good Italian styled ambiance and jazz type feel. Friendly helpful staff Coffee is excellent A good place to chill for 15 From blokes toilets are cramped. A stand-up urinal only! And as soon as I came out a member of staff said "wash your hands" (always do) Women's toilet is unisex.

Really nice cosy coffee open since 1951, a place where you can eat homemade cakes or snacks. The staff is really nice, i think all the family work here. The menu is in english. The coffees are really good, i tried the vienna coffee and the caramel cappuccino, it was delicious. The chocolate cake was homemade and soft, and the apple pie (homemade too) was really fresh. It's a really nice place to enjoy good coffee in a quiet and nice atmosphere. Arigato 🥰

Absolutely lovely cafe since 1951, operated by this sweet couple. I’m moved by the friendliness and hospitality of all the staffs. Superb ambience and soft classical music, with classy interior design + decoration. They serve great cocoa and dessert, that I came back repeatedly during my stay in Takayama. Highly recommended

An old-school coffee shop with home-made cakes and pies. The coffee was made by an expertise coffee master. I ordered their specialty apple pie, it was freshly baked out of oven, so warm and crisp. The chocolate cake was served with chocolate and berry sauce on top, the cake itself was rich and moist. I am truly satisfied with the place.
