Excellent ryokan with in-room meal service. Staff is excellent, accomodations spacious and cool, and food superb. Don't be fooled by the 3 star hotel rating - we tried the 4 star ryokan down the street the night previous and it was so bad we left. This ryokan should be rated 4 stars or more!

Overall, this place is a good place to stay. It is very close to the city, so the location is 5 stars. Walkable you everything we wanted to do! The food is good, I would say 4 stars for the food. Authentic, good local, high quality dishes. We enjoyed eating in our rooms together, it was very romantic for a couple. The service for meals was incredibly variable. One night we had wonderful service - she was prompt, explained each menu option, etc. The second night, the opposite, which was difficult for us to enjoy when we didn’t know how to eat and/or what everything was. The onset is small, but very nice. Relaxing. The bathroom is due for an update, it is difficult to maneuver. Water pressure and temperature is temperamental. No fan so very warm for extended period throughout room afterwards. The room itself would benefit from an update. Truthfully, we spent so little time in there except for dinner and sleep that it does not impact stay too much. They do have parking, however, you must move your car by noon on the day you check out which was time limiting. We weren’t told that until that morning, so that was a bummer! They have coffee and water in the lobby which is very nice to have easily accessible. Overall, service is good. They are very polite and helpful!!

For a hotel where you have to sleep on the ground, the floor wasn't clean. There was hair on the towel, which definitely wasn't mine. The telephone shower was always turning to the wall and it was almost impossible to take a shower. You can also hear everything that is happening in the rooms next to yours and also in the hallway. If you are vegetarian, eat before the dinner and breakfast because everything except the tiny dessert and the bowl of rice had meat in it.

We stopped over for a 1 night stay in Takayama. As far as Ryokans with a private bathroom go (this was a bit of a mission in itself to find) it presented good vfm. Whilst it is definitely worth the experience, we couldn't see ourselves spending more than a couple of nights in these traditional inns. Dinner was great fun but we found the traditional breakfast a bit odd - and we do tend to eat pretty much everything. Decor was also a bit dated but staff were really friendly.

Oh man, where do I begin?! The staff are all so sweet, friendly, respectful, and warm; you can tell by their professional decorum that they are eager to help provide as wonderful an experience as possible. They helped us throughout various aspects of our stay, whether it's finding out what time certain shops open or close, arranging transportation/taxi for us, setting up our kaiseki dinner and breakfast, and simply just making us feel welcomed and stress-free! Furthermore, if you're hesitating about getting their kaiseki dinner or not, hesitate no more! Trust me and GET their dinner, for it encompasses various unique and delicious flavors, as well as various Hida beef dishes, which is what Takayama is known for! I promise you you won't regret it, for the price is incredibly reasonable and the taste is unbelievably delicious and memorable! Their onsen is traditional and is on the smaller side, but they partner up with their sister hotel (Alpina, which is also beautiful) which offers a wider and more expansive Western style onsen experience that's only 5 minutes away (they even have 3 shuttle bus times to transport you over for convenience)! Overall, we loved our entire experience, for it provided us with a very traditional and memorable ryokan experience! I highly recommend giving Ryokan Seiryu a try, for it is also very close to Takayama old town, which is its main attraction with delicious snacks, desserts, drinks and, most importantly, Hida Beef! Thank you Hotel Seiryu for such a memorable and happy experience, we promise we will be back and with more friends! Thank you for reading and good luck! P.S. They even dress up their hand sanitizers in cute little kimonos/yukatas! (See the pictures! :p)

I had a great experience here. Professional and friendly staff. My 11 course meal was outstanding. This ryokan specializes in Hida beef kaiseki. The hot spring bath was exactly what I needed after walking for days in Tokyo. I will return here someday.

A lovely classic ryokan in a great location. We were welcomed with hot tea. The onsen is very small, realistically only for one person, but you can use the partner hotel a few blocks away if desired.

Ryokan Seiryu is not the fanciest ryokan in town, but it has very good value for the money. When you are ready for dinner lady comes to your room to set the table and serve the amazing meal, more than 10 small dishes. Rooms are very typical, you sleep on the tatami and there is no furniture. The hot spring bath is really good and you have to be fully naked, however women and men have separate rooms. A stay in a ryokan is a must-do when traveling to Japan.

This is my first time visit Takayama, and Best choose to stay at Seiryu when you visit this area, their beef cuisine and all dishes were very delicious. I also want to thanks to their staff Mr.Lee San,Room servant Miss Yoshiko San, they are very kind and patient with professional service skill! I would come to stay here again.

My friends and I stayed here for two nights and we had a wonderful time. The staff was very helpful and the meals were all delicious. The private onsen is great for a few people but if it's full the staff will give you a free entry pass for a larger one a few minute's walk away. Plus, the location is great for getting to/from the station and to the morning markets. Staying in a ryokan is something every traveler should experience in Japan and I'm very glad we chose this one.

My partner and I stayed for 2 nights, and as westerners staying in a traditional Japanese room, we found the experience challenging, but I am very glad I chose to do it here. The service and staff are sensational and cannot be faulted in any way. If you stay here the Japanese set menu for dinner is an absolute must do. Both nights we were treated to the most exceptional dining experience I have ever had in a hotel room. Truly beautiful Neal's that showcase the exceptional local speciality, Hida Beef. The location is also fabulous, with great dining, morning market and the old town minutes away by foot.

During my holidays in Japan I stayed in many Ryokan but this one was definitely the best one! Super friendly staff, the room was clean and typical, the experience of the dinner in the room was amazing! The location is near the city center. 100% recommended

Nice place to stay with reasonable price. Though their onsen is small, you can go to their sister hotel to enjoy bigger and nicer pooldy
