Absolutely recommend! About 10ish baths, all of which except 2 are outdoors. Tattoo friendly, and really well priced at about 600yen per adult. Warning: they dont rent towels, they sell them. So for 200yen for a small or 500yen for a larger size, you now have a towel to take home. Thank you for being the only onsen i could find in the okuhida area that was tattoo friendly! ❤

This is a great place for a day trip for the whole family. We brought a friend with tattoos and he was welcome to use all parts of the facility—a rarity in Japan. The outdoor pools are well maintained and quiet.

(Review for the onsen only) Wow, what an incredible place! This was our first time visiting an onsen and I must admit I think we are a bit spoiled now. For me I was a bit nervous because I’d never been to an onsen before and I didn’t want to do something wrong and look like a complete fool in front of everyone. Luckily, I only made a slight mistake that only a couple of people saw… hahaha. ANYWAY! Here are the things that I would find helpful to know: - It is a public bath that separates men and women. - They provide you with towels to buy, otherwise you should bring your own towel. - There are instructions/guidelines in English as soon as you walk in the women’s room in front of the wall. - They provide shampoo and soap, you are welcome to bring additional items. - The very front part is like a big sink area with faucets and buckets – I believe this is for washing your FACE, not your body. Oops my bad. - Right around the corner from the sink area everything opens up and you have like 3 massive rows of showers where you should wash your body before entering the baths. - The baths have a high concentration of calcium carbonate, which is why there are little white stringy things in the water. (I think) - There is a clock inside so you can keep track of the time. After I sorted all this out, I enjoyed the 9 glorious hot baths both inside and outside, pretty much completely to myself. The thing that saved me, though, was the cold water bath inside. If I didn’t take routine stops to cool down in that I would have overheated and not enjoyed the experience. That was a lot. I found my first onsen experience to be absolutely enjoyable and incredibly relaxing. The people working here are very nice too. We came back the next day!

Absolutely some of the best rotenburo (outdoor hot springs) I've experienced, and I've been to MANY in Japan in various parts of the country over the years. The water, as with all the local hot springs, is very good free-flowing genuine hot springs water. There are many pools of varying temperatures depending on what you're in the mood for. The baths are quite well-maintained and clean. Don't be fooled (as some other reviewers unfamiliar with hot springs were) by the 湯の花, yu no hana, the natural mineral threads and flakes found in abundance in the water. It's proof of the quality of the springs and is highly prized by onsen fans. You can even buy dried packets of it from the souvenir shops! I'll post a picture from one of the hand-washing basins in town to show you what it looks like. Watching the snow fall gently around you soaking in one of these rock-lined pools is a bucket list item for sure. The design of the pools and surroundings is quite nicely done. I also recommend refreshing yourself with some of the local fruit milk for sale in the vending machines in the rest area. Bottled milk after a bath is a Japanese tradition, and the Hida region is known for its beef and milk products. I always try whatever fruit milk is available and the ones in Gifu are five stars! The orange milk drink tastes like a Creamsicle and is tasty, but the pineapple milk is the best in my opinion! I came here each day that I stayed in town. I'll definitely be back!

Had an amazing time, the outside onsen is very nice, there are about 10 outside pools and two inside (women side). Super happy they allowed me in with tattoos. The water in the hot pools are very "natural", there is a smell of sulfur. This place also has a great restaurant. Overall I had a great, relaxing timed and would love to come back.

The experience in this onsen was amazing! We stayed in one of the cabins with the bath tub with thermal water and we also use the public onsen. The cabin was clean and it was a very beautiful experience to sleep there instead of the hotel rooms. We also had the typical japanese breakfast which was good and the dinner at the internal restaurant really suprise me: quite good price and the food was so good! The onsen was just perfect with many pools at different temperature. And the best part is that tattoos are allowed too! So I didn't had to cover them! So happy about this!! Arigatou gozaimasu!

The hot spring is pretty relaxing, but I had hoped for a bit more variety between the baths - they are pretty much all the same temperature. The volcanic water smells strongly of sulphur and has white strings floating in it, so don't expect just normal hot water! There is a (gas-warmed) sauna available, which is a nice addition. I was happily surprised by the restaurant. They have a good variety of meals that fits any budget.

We went as a day trip from Takayama to the onsen. The rotemburo (outdoor baths) are amazing, there are several to choose from with different temperatures and water depths. We visited on a Monday and it was pretty quiet, could easily get a bath to myself. As others have said, tattoos are allowed :) the restaurant is also really nice. I'd recommend the hoba miso set, which come with veggies and other little dishes. You have to order meat separately but this was plenty on its own for me. The miso was absolutely delicious.

My go-to hot springs in town! I'm from Takayama and this is the first place I take all of my American friends. I look forward to visiting during the winter months.

Minutes of walk from central bus stop and a walking distance of the town center and a variety of restaurants. Nice comfy Traditional rooms, but the most memorable thing about this place is the building, traditionally designed, lots of windows to the Japanese gardens all around that makes you feel in the middle of the forest in all parts of the ryokan. Great food, make sure to book in advance the preset meal! There’s also a nice convenience store and a nice café for coffee and sweets. Staff was great and helpful. Wish we could have stayed longer!

I didn't stay here, but I used the onsen, the resting area and the cafeteria. Everything lovely, amazing onsen with outdoor baths and huge, beautiful inside bath too. Very cheap (600yen) for the quality. Also the restaurant Mominoki very good too, I tried the Hida beef teppanyaki and it was amazing. You can easily spend half a day here. Nice place for a solo traveler.

Lovely, large onsen with many outdoor baths of varying temperature. The sulphur smell was not too strong in my opinion. Visited as a day guest. It was only 500 jpy each + towel rental, very good value. It was pretty empty when we visited in early December, despite it being a weekend. You can catch a bus from Takayama bus station for around 1,500 jpy each way. It takes an hour. I'd consider staying overnight next time, as there are enough baths with views of the mountains to enjoy for more than a few hours.

Is this potential a Japan’s best hot springs hotel? I have stayed here several times and want to congratulate the staff on providing such a great experience. Thanks so much!

Must stay over night and enjoy onsen under the stars with some snow falling. For dinner ask for the set menu. OISHIIIII

Beautiful, tattoo-friendly onsen with sauna. No cover-up stickers necessary!

We have to make the beds ourselves which is uncommon for Japanese ryokan. Hotel is located next to bus station, very convenient to walk.

Very nice and relaxing onsen. We had the daily pass and felt very refreshed afterwards. Make sure to read the instructions if you haven't been to an onsen before.

Nice quiet area within the wood for a relaxing soak in Japanese hotbath. The scenery was gorgeous and people were friendly. Rooms are a bit old but that's because the buildings here have long history. A good getaway spot if you want to be away from the bustle and hustle of cities.

Came just for the onsen. The outdoor baths are amazing with many to choose from. The smell of sulfur is strong and theres white particles floating around in all the baths. No idea what it is but it can’t be bad. Anyway the rest area is pretty comfy too, and I slept well after it.

Large onsen facility with many different pools of varying temperature, very popular amongst the locals. Entry pricing is very reasonable though bring your own towel to avoid having to buy one there. There is a restaurant as well with pretty decent food as well.

Visited the place for a Japanese Hot spring bath. The outside baths are relaxing and the tranquil view of the mountains makes your bathing experience more special.

🫤 Don't bother with this place, it is overrated. Parking outside and toilets inside. Seems very clean and the food was actually really good, but the service was slow and at exactly 3pm we were yelled at (and so we're other people), to get out as they were closing. We arrived at 2:15, took 10 minutes...
