This was our first time at a ryokan and it’s going to set the bar really high. As another reviewer noted, Oyado Koto no Yume embodies the best of hospitality. Right upon arrival, our hosts were warm and helpful. Would also note that the lady whom I think is the owner speaks very good English if necessary. I’ve noticed that the staff will also speak basic Japanese slowly if it’s clear that you’re learning the language and are struggling to speak it but trying—I really appreciated that :) You’re asked to take your shoes off upon entry, which being Asian, I love. I think the host also wiped down the wheels of our suitcases. This little place just goes beyond and above with all the nice things they offer additionally (price inclusive) to ensure you have a lovely stay. There’s a yukata service, where they let you choose a yukata to wear inside or outside, as well as plush coats hanging in the lobby area that you can borrow if it’s cold outside. They have aromatherapy burners with a variety of scents that you can choose, just ask the front desk for an aroma pot. The room itself was pristine and immediately instilled in us a sense of calm. There are little snacks waiting on the table, a fridge that’s actually a fridge and not a minibar so can actually be used by the guest, a full set of cups and plates along with a kettle and coffee pod machine, and the host will explain that you get sleep yukatas and specific face towels as well. If you have the Japanese-style room, the staff will make up your futon while you’re out. They left a sweet note on ours and also a put a pitcher of ice water on the table. It was these little touches that made our stay so pleasant and memorable. Would also mention that if you’re there longer, or it’s raining, there’s a small manga library downstairs and it looks like you can also do origami, which will get proudly displayed in a glass cabinet. There’s also a bathhouse and you can reserve a private one for a small fee. Staying at Oyado Koto no Yume felt like being a welcome guest at home. After we checked out, we were given a set of Takayama postcards as a gift. Would highly recommend you stay here if visiting the charming town of Takayama, so you can experience the best of Japanese hospitality. I can’t wait to go back. ありがとうございました~

Staff are super nice here and always greet you when you walk by. I love tatami floors so it was good. Also has a private bath you can book out and it's not very expensive at all.

The Staff are very attentive to the guest and service level is high. I brought my Bicycle to Takayama. Bought too much gifts and want to Ta-Q-Bin my Bicycle to the next hotel. The staff boxes up my bicycle for the transport. They even put a fragile sticker on the box on their own. Fantastic.

If I could give six stars I'd like to :) the service was top notch, the room the Onsen the mattress were excellent. They also offered me some presents for my birthday (amazing there!). I wish I'd stayed longer.

It was a great experience to stay in the Oyado Koto No Yume. The inn is close to the station and the promenade. The service was very attentive and caring. We visited for one night and had strong rain upon arrival. After a short trip to the promenade that left our shoes soaking wet, we received them dry and warm before heading out again, as they dried them in the short time in between. Communication in English was no problem! The tatami rooms were spacious and lovely decorated. We visited the private bath for one 40 minute slot and had the Japanese breakfast. Make sure to try on the Yukata they provide for free! We hope we can visit again in the future!

We had a wonderful experience at the Oyado Koto no Yume! We were only there for one night unfortunenately - if we had could, we would have stayed longer there! The staff was so friendly and attentive and the service was over the top! It is a traditional japanese hotel, so you get a kimono of your choice for outside and inside. They even have a kimono wearing service. It also has a small onsen to use. For breakfast you can choose one of different options, even a classic japanese breakfast. We've enjoyed our stay and recommended it to everyone staying in Takayama!

They go extra miles and do more than you can expect! There are two incidents - 1. I lost my coin case and even called and asked the front desk. They didn’t find any but saying they will let us know if they find it. After tidying our room, we realised the coin case is magically lying on the bed. Obviously they have found it and place it nicely and obviously for us to see. Can’t thank them enough. 2. Was going to head out for dinner, asked a staff about the restaurant. It’s really nearby and we were going to walk there. When we touched down at the restaurant, we needed to wait a bit but the waitress asked if we are from the hotel - it turns out staff from the hotel called the restaurant and told them that they should be expecting us. The little gesture matters and love these thoughtful acts. What I like: 1. We didn’t expect March in Takayama is kind of cold, not enough clothes obviously. And then at the hotel they provided free hanten to wear (thick Japanese style cotton-padded jacket), stylishly saved and strongly recommended anyone who likes the style to wear it. 2. You can choose if you want to have meals at the hotel or not. We appreciate it as the flexibility is here. Get to try restaurants nearby is great too. 3. Timing we went (early March) was not TOO busy. I judged it by the quietness when I went to the public bath / onsen, mostly no one there, which I personally like it a lot. 4. Cutely and cosily decorated room. Spacious enough to open luggages. Well equipped with what we need. 5. Nice public area for people to rest, even indoor and outdoor area with charcoal makes it very cosy (and it is safe so no worry). Origami experience is provided so if anyone is interested. Free herbal tea after 6pm is lovely for reading there after dinner and onsen. 6. Aroma-pod with essential oil of traditional Kyoto fragrance. You have to ask but it is free. Highly recommend, it’s for small cosy and slow travel and such a great experience with amazing service!

Amazing Japanese room! This was what we was looking for, we relaxed in private "Onsen" and we enjoyed Japanese Yukata drinking tea. The breakfast was really delicious. 5 stars are not enough !

An excellent stay in Takayama, can't recommend this enough! We love the friendly service and how homely the Inn feels. The full japanese breakfast is superb, freshly prepared before you with options for fruits, bbq meat, and seafood. They event have shared onsen and private onsen rooms. To have the full experience, wear the yukata for a day out.

Great location, a quick 2 minute walk from the Takayama Station and Nohi Bus center. All the staff here are amazing and super attentive. They were always there to provide assistance and help whenever we needed. On one of the days that it was raining, they even offered us rain boots, they really think of everything here for their guests! Room is very spacious and clean, breakfast options are great and delicious! We highly recommend this ryokan and will definitely stay here again! Thank you for going above and beyond!

This Ryokan was perfect after visiting Tokyo. All of the staff are pleasant and attentive. Rooms are spacious and they pay attention to all the little details that hotels in Toronto Canada miss. I would love to come back to Takayama and if I do, I'd book here again.

First time experience of a Ryokan didn’t know what to expect except that it’s recommended part of trip to Japan. There is such a personal experience to this feels like you’re at home this is all down to the wonderful staff. Once you check in you can pick your kimono and they help you dress up in one (it’s not as easy as it looks!) to take great photos in. If you leave the hotel you can borrow a jacket which I had compliments for :) Hotel is in a great location to the walking spots of Takayama and also the train/ bus station. The bathroom products are very lush and gentle to the skin wish I brought some before I left! Finally the hotel gave such lovely greats for our anniversary and made our stay very special.

We have had a wonderful stay here (2 nights in April 2010). It is a short walk from Takayama station. We were greated with smiles, tea and a sweet while we checked in. The staff remembered our faces and room number each time we came and left, so it all felt very personal. They provided free herbal tea samples, origami supplies, newspapers, books and manga for entertainment. The rooms are spacious, with the traditional futon rolled our while we were at dinner. The onsen is clean and well set up with toiletries, nail and hair haircare supplies available. We did not use the private onsen. We had the Japanese style breakfast, and again it was delicious. It appeared they catered well for dietary needs. It is not a small ryokan, it has at least 30 room (my guess based on room numbers) but with the care with which we were treated, we could have been the only ones staying here!

What a wonderful place! The staff are respectful and helpful, the futons are very comfortable and the rooms big, the privet hot spring bath is fine though not very hot, the food at the restaurant is good. I like that they ask you to choose your kemono so you will feel more like your self instead of just giving you what they give all guests, they would help you in wearing in too. It's great that you can pay in credit card. Good location but a bit expensive.

I really enjoyed this experience! I would like to add however, that the establishment is thoroughly Westernised. Lots of tourists, even the Japanese breakfast is accessible, the baths are modern... Its a plus because it means that you're not brutally confronted with the culture and its a definite minus if you want to go for the true Japanese Ryokan experience. Its a nice place to stay at, very comfortable, especially if you're not fully at ease with being immersed in a full on Japanese stay.

What an experience! This hotel was definitely a highlight of my trip to Japan! All the staff are beyond hospitable, even helping us on our way out to put in the address into our rental car's navigation! The breakfast is delicious, I definitely recommend going for the Japanese breakfast to complete the whole experience. The hotsprings are just the perfect thing to round off a long day(s) sightseeing. The provided yakutas are great to round off a truly traditional japanese experience. Would 100% recommend to anyone visiting Japan!
