5/14 - 7/10 open-air onsen closed for Construction. I spent a night at magokuro, I was really excited for this trip. But upon arrival, I was ushered into dinner. I just realized that the outdoor onsen that everyone was craving about was under construction. On their English page, no information about the construction was shown, but it was there on their Japanese page, we are foreigners and couldn’t read Japanese. When we booked through japanican, again no warnings of under-construction. I wouldn’t book this hotel if I knew about this. Their so called “onsen coupons” are only good from 3pm-9pm in other local onsen ryokans, but are only good the day of arrival, how is this a good compensation when the open air onsen should be offered in the morning as well? I wouldn’t have spent $350 usd just for this experience. When I asked if I could use the onsen coupons for the next day, they firstly declined. This is my first ryokan experience and it failed my expectations. The next day, upon reading my review, they offered for us to use the onsen coupons for the in-house shop alternative. Moreover, they offered to drive us to the nearest bus stop, a redemption in customer service.

We had a very pleasant experience at Motoyu Magokuro staying for one night in March 2023. The owners, Naomi-san and her husband, picked us up at the bus station when we arrived and drove us back after the check-out. She is a kind host attentetive to her guests. My wife doesn't eat meat, so we called the hotel and asked if it is possible to replace meat in her dinner/breakfast with fish or seafood, and they gladly did so even though it is not that common in Japan. Naomi-san also took us for a walk at night to show the public foor bath, so we could relax, and offered some advice on our further travel plans. Speaking about the amenitities and the hotel, everything is clean, tasteful, and well maintained. There is a room with some cool (and visibly expensive) hi-fi system where you can listen to the music, read books, and chill. The hotel's onsen is beautiful and tidy. It has indoor and outdoor male/female baths as well as a couple of family baths where you can be in private with your partner/kids. During our stay there were times when we were alone at the public outdoor baths, which provided for a superb experience having an entire onsen for our own. The food was delicious and plentiful, which was nice given that there are no restaurants or convenience stores in that area. Everything was perfect, so we can highly recommend this place and we will be happy to stay at Magokuro again if we are back to this area.

Mr. Hayao Miyazaki stayed here as well. Spring water from 4 sources, outdoor and indoor hot springs with great food. We had a full course and ordered local meat on the side. Very nice staff and will always recommend :)

Absolutely amazing. The ryokan is beautiful and your hosts make you feel right at home. The rooms are large and the food is second to none. The outdoor onsen is absolutely stunning. Just a divine onsen experience. We will be back again.

Quaint Ryokan in the middle of the Japanese Alps. The view of the mountains is magnificent and sitting in the hot spring water while snow falls to melt on your head is nothing short of magical. And did I mention you can use the various indoor and outdoor onsen all night and watch the stars? The food (Keiseki meal comes with the room cost) is exquisite and the staff was awesome. We never had any issues with communication either even tho they only speak very little English and I speak virtually no Japanese. When you visit, also check out the music room with its JBL Paragon speaker and McIntosh tube amp. The sound it produces is as if the band is playing right in front of you. The isn't much else to do in the town, although there is a tiny and cute morning market and a public foot bath, but if you're looking for a place to relax after hiking or skiing or just to wind down from your hectic life for a little while, you've come to the right place.

If you have plan to visit Kamikoji, you got to stay here. There were hundred reasons to stay. Best reason is the owner. The day I left ryokan I had left my tablet pc. Owner of ryokan, she put whole effort to hand tablet in. Thank you again
