Gorgeous sushi and welcoming atmosphere. Order off the Japanese menu, there is a lot more choice. For instance we both ordered the 14 piece sushi set (5,000 yen), which was not on the English menu. I loved the Hida beef (it was like eating an entire steak!), Sea eel, Toro, salmon, minced tuna and abalone the most. They are super generous with the pickled ginger. We picked a hit and a cold sake, and the hot sake I picked (pictured), is the second most popular amongst the locals and goes well with sushi. Highly recommend you try matsuki sushi (just make sure you go to the sushi place as they also have a yakinku restaurant which is also meant to be really good).

This is a genuine sushi restaurant catered mainly for Japanese customers. While tourists are found here due to its high rating, don't expect to strike a conversation with the hostess in English. We are no Japanese speakers so we only pointed at the menu to order their sets. Both the presentation and the quality of the sushi are of very high quality, at least to us foreigners. Despite the lack of communication with us, the hostess remains polite and courteous as expected from a traditional establishment of their culture. If you happen to be in Takayama, make sure you don't miss the opportunity to dine here.

Excellent omakase sushi and sashimi place. They have dinner course set as well. The service is top-notch! Take a seat at the counter so that you can watch the chefs in action. We love the fried shrimp, crab innards, kani soup, sushi set menu and the tempura. Tucked away in a quiet corner off the main road. Highly recommended by locals!

Very popular sushi restaurant and you need to book a reservation 4 days in advance. The sushi are generally very nice but certain items on the menu limited to only 10 sets per day so you need to place order fast. The Hida beef sushi Don is really nice and a must try.

Came here for dinner and had the Hida beef and sushi set meal. The beef was delicious and it was one of the best meals I’ve had! We walked in on a Thursday night around 7ish and were seated on the counter so you could watch the chefs at work. Highly recommend!

Very friendly sushi restaurant. Chefs and waiters are so friendly. The lady waitress able to speak very good English! Sushi is so fresh, flounder is the best in my opinion. The tako still able to move after being slapped by the chef. Steak is crunchy on the surface, tender and juicy inside. Top up with the sauce, perfecto! Last one is the kani miso yaki, grilled crab miso, for crab lover, it’s a must try. For me, the the dish that can make me happy with every spoon of the miso I ate! 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We were told by locals that this is the best sushi place in town and we had to experience it. And it didn’t disappoint. Most staff speaks English and there is a set menu in English but you can also order thru the Japanese menu which have pictures. Arigato to the chef and staff🙏🏼

My wife and I had one of the best experiences ever. All of the personnel were so kind and welcoming. The food was outstanding; we had sashimi, sushi and beef. Everything was beyond perfect. The presentation of the food was beautiful. They even arranged our meal to meet our dietary restrictions; we can’t eat any seafood, nevertheless they adapted it and even gave us a special dessert. They went the extra mile on everything. Thanks for everything Matsuki Sushi staff, you made us very very happy and we’ll keep this in our memory forever. Looking forward to coming back someday. Sushi were all delicious especially the scallop that just melts in your mouth! Place was really crowded so you either have to reserve the day before or head there when it's open. For its price point, the quality of the food speaks for itself. Really recommend this place if you have some cash to splurge :))

I had high expectations for Hida beef but the experience at Matsuki Sushi still surpassed them! Sushi was fresh and delicious too. To top it off, the service was excellent and easy for English speakers. Thank you Tora-san and family! Highly recommend checking this place out if you’re in Takayama.

I came to Matsuki Sushi 6 years ago based on my hotel’s recommendation and 6 years later, I came again! The first time was lovely and I got to sit at the counter, but had a hard time communicating with the staff and chef (who was very enthusiastic) at the time. However, today was so great! I came on a weekday right at opening for dinner and got to sit at a table with the tatami mats on the first floor. The staff spoke English very well and gave us an English menu, but chef (one of three generations running the family establishment — very cool) was visibly excited and gave us the Japanese menu which had additional items on it. He literally came from inside the counter to our table. He asked if we could read it, and well, there were some pictures, there’s Google translate, and some had hiragana so it was easy. The staff were very attentive and patient. I recommend the fried shrimp to everyone for ¥1,000, it was so delicious and worth it. The umeshu and sake (based on the staff’s recommendation) were also really good. The chef hoped the prices were reasonable for the omakase and even asked us if we couldn’t eat anything and if wasabi was ok. Honestly, the prices for the omakase are VERY reasonable. The otoro was the best and the crab miso soup was calming in the cold weather. Thank you to the chef and staff of Matsuki Sushi who took care of my friend and I tonight! I hope to come back again in a few years. I’m glad the chef was excited to hear that I came back after 6 years, and I hope him and his family are still here many years later.
