I loved visiting this place. It’s so pretty, almost majestic. The only small complaint is the smoke (because of the use of real fire wood to warm-up the house). At the beginning it was OK, but after 10 mins or so, especially in the higher floors, it felt a bit too smoky. Still 5 stars though, and a total recommend!

Going into any one of the homes in this beautiful village is like stumbling into a Time Machine, it’s incredible how very well maintained these buildings are and how well the locals have been able to pass down historic techniques of construction and even sake making. Entry for adults is ¥400 and I must recommend visiting atleast one home if you’re in the area, it is totally worth it.

A museum that offers rich history of the village. Also great views from upper levels.

I loved it! It smelled smoky because they really use wood to boiled tea and to warm the whole room. To second till fourth floor, I managed to see a lot of sewing and working tools. Also the interior of Gassho style house. They provide hot wild grass tea for us to drink, feels like visiting grandma’s house. Entrance fee:¥300.

This house gives a great insight into the lifestyle of the people during the Edo period. 4 floors of pure culture. Definitely recommended if you make a trip to Shirakawa-Go!

It was late fall and about 35 degrees Fahrenheit so there was a large caldron of wild grass tea boiling on the central hearth, similar to how it would've been done centuries ago. Visitors are invited to sip warm tea on the first floor, before or after visiting the 3 floors above. The smoke from the fire gets more and more dense as you climb the floors, and it was a little difficult to enjoy the antique displays (those with sensitive lungs, be aware!!!) but again, this is how it would've been in days past, and the smoke is an integral part of the house - coating the interior beams with a black water/oil resistant soot. 300yen for adults to enter.

Nice old houses in Shirakawa go. Very interesting to see how Japanese people lived and the tools they used as they go about their lives. Fantastic view of the village from the attic.

Memorable experience💗 House staffs were very kind and attentive. You could learn a lot by trying to talk to them.

You have to go inside one of these houses to see how the roof is constructed. I enjoyed both Kanda house and Wanda house but if I had to pick one, visit Kanda house because you can climb to the highest floor to see the top of the gassho “prayer hands” roof shape clearly.

Was a pretty decent visit for the price paid. Exhibits had English translation. Was a tad too smoky but was a good experience on how they used to stay in the gassho-style houses.
