曹洞宗で山号は海蔵山。飛騨三十三観音霊場第3番札所で十一面観音菩薩を祀る。720年、泰澄大師によって白山神社の別当・妙観寺として創建される。1395年、曹洞宗・總持寺の22世竹窓智厳が創建開山(勧請開山は了堂真覚)し、飛騨最古の曹洞宗寺院となった。本能寺の変で明智光秀に討たれた金森長則(享年19)の菩提寺である。
