I have visited this square during Christmas period and it was beautiful. I arrived there during the Christmas lights decoration of the square, however still was beautiful and on Christmas mood with a lot of shops around for coffee or food. I totally recommend it for Christmas in Tallinn.

Vabaduse väljak is Tallinn's beating heart, blending history and modern charm effortlessly. The Victory Column stands tall amidst the square's lively atmosphere, a symbol of Estonia's independence. The fusion of old-world architecture and vibrant energy creates an inviting space where locals and visitors mingle, cafes spill onto cobblestones, and the day seamlessly transitions into a magical night. This square isn't just a historic site; it's an experience that encapsulates Estonia's resilience and pride, a must-visit gem in Tallinn for anyone seeking a blend of culture and vitality.

Estonians are proud over their freedom and this can be seen on the Vabaduse väljak, The Freedom Square. The Christmas Lights on the square are marvellous! Tallinn has so much more to offer than Vanalinn, this square is always wort a visit!

The Freedom Monument overlooks Freedom Square, a large open space formerly used for parades on Soviet holidays. It was unveiled in 2009 to commemorate the struggles of the Estonian independence movement of 1918-20 against Germany and Soviet Russia. The structure comprises a large cross mounted on a 24-meter-high pillar of dimpled glass and sort of looks like an ice sculpture that is on the verge of melting – a deliberate effect meant to signify the movement’s fragile nature. It is, however, a slightly controversial piece of work, with some Tallinn natives regarding it as too ostentatious.

Freedom Square is a popular pedestrian meeting place that features the Monument to the War of Independence. Throughout the years, the square has had various names, including Heinaturg (Hay Market), Peetri Plats (Peter's Square), and Võiduväljak (Victory Square). It was officially named Freedom Square in 1939, a name it held until 1948. The name was reinstated in 1989. The defensive structures uncovered during archaeological excavations have been preserved and stored in the underground parking lot beneath the square. Visitors can catch a glimpse of the remains of the guard gates of the defense tower at the end of Harju Street through a glass screen.

The square is located on the southern end of the Old Town. If you fancy a bit of history you will like to know that on its site, in front of the Harju Gate, there was once a Swedish bastion, which was demolished in the middle of the 19th century. In 1867, the St. John's Church was erected on the square. In 1910, the Haymarket was liquidated on the square, and the square was paved with stones. On the 200th anniversary of the capture of the city by the Russian Empire, a monument to Peter I was erected on the square, which was dismantled on 1 May 1922.

The look of this place changes all the time. During summer it is full of young people, mostly skaters. During winter it is decorated with some kind of christmas decorations. Sometimes it is also a location for festivals, concerts, demonstrations, gatherings.

We always enjoy Freedom Square when we go to Tallinn. It's beautiful in every season. After all, what's not to like? It has an historic church, a stone staircase, modern architecture, shops, and in winter a icerink.

A beautiful square in the city center of Tallinn! The space is open and large, where you will also find the St. John's Church and the War of Independence Victory Column. It is easy to reach by bus and you can walk straight into Old Town from this point.

Great new years event with live music by local groups. The square was packed with people dancing to the music and having a good time. It was nice to see that as a tourist coming here for the new years under these freezing temperatures. Good times

Not too much to see in the exact square. A yellow church and a tall crucifix grace the square but not much otherwise. Nonetheless worth the trip if you’re in Tallinn

Just having a stroll in the evening and happen to stumble on the large empty square with a memorial and a old church. The square is just oitside the old part of town.

Go here. It's important. Show your solidarity. Take pics of the Ukrainian flag flying beside that of Estonia. Post those.

It's a nice square commemorating Estonia's freedom from Soviet Occupation. Candle lit vigils are held here yearly for this. Last weekend, we chanced upon a live concert being held by the US army in this square

Very empty, a lot of restouranst. But if you go in some other streets just few more meters you will pay like at least half the pricet then here. Very expensive and not sure if worth it if just few more meters Down there are great places with food and are cheaper. The oldest running pharmacy in europ is here nice and worth checking out

The place to gather, celebrate and enjoy in modern Estonia. It's usually empty with a big open area, but when we have our holidays or special events, people gather, decorations are placed and fun begins ! Whenever Estonians protest or want their voice to be heard, this is one of the places to gather and do that. There is a monument placed here in order to remember our war for Independence, it's lit during the night and glows within. Underground there is a parking area, quite expensive, but the most convenient in the center of the town.

Freedom Square was decorate with a blue Christmas theme. It was not overcrowded this time around. It makes a great stop for your visit of the old town. It also has a transportation hub for teams, trolley buses and autobuses. It is also near the shopping district.

Visited whilst on a stop over in Tallinn on a cruise. Picturesque medieval town with large square surrounded by old buildings. Many of the buildings have a plaque on the wall with its history in English. Sturdy shoes required as lots of cobbles.

Freedom Square has had different names at different times throughout history. In Russian times it was victory square, when Estonia ruled it was named as it is now. The gigantic glass cross on the square was built to commemorate the Estonian victims of the war of independence (which led to the foundation of the first republic). Fun fact: Estonia was back then a real pioneer of LGBTIQ+ rights and even decriminalized homosexuality in 1918 (this was later revoked).
