Cool museum! I went on international museum day so it was free which made it even better!

This is a quirky museum of the Estonian nation that is worth going to and checking out if in Tallinn. The emphasis of the museum is on the earlier periods of Estonia, rather than the modern history, and perhaps the best collections are the old weaponry (with interspersed modern weapons) in the cellars. You will get a good sense of where the Estonian people emerged from. The money section of the museum is also very interesting, and there is a fascinating comparison of the prices of different goods over time. Don't miss it. One big, very strange omission was any mention of the Holocaust in Estonia. Despite mentions of occupation and WWII, the Holocaust in Estonia was not mentioned AT ALL. This is a strange historical (and moral) omission. Aside from that, this is worth a visit. There is also a weird but interesting exhibit on Freemasonry in Estonia, which feels hilariously propagandistic, but is also worth checking out. Enjoy.

8 Euro for subpar Wikipedia stuff that seems more aimed at children than adults The number and quality of actual exhibits is very poor and they try to make up by text and interactive elements. While the attempt is laudable, the result needs much more work to make it suitable for anyone actually interested in history. To be honest I find the old communist curated museum better than this modern one

For me the exhibition here lacked a guiding narrative. Some elements were really interesting, but everything was a bit random and not comprehensively going through the history of Estonia. I recommend much more a visit to the Tallinn City Museum.

This is not the place to go for HISTORY. It has a musical exhibit in the main floor, money upstairs, weapons/firearms and a person's international clothing and object exhibit in the basement. The only nod to history is a children's video playing. There is a free audio guide. You enter the exhibit number and it plays a description.

An intriguing and captivating stroll through the history of Estonia! We spent about an hour here which was enough time to check everything out. Well out together and a great insight into the history of the Estonian people from 9000 BC through to today.

This is one of the best national history museums I've ever been to. It was cheap to get in, and while it's not big, neither is Estonia so it fits. The exhibits are all interesting and in-depth, translated into English, and many of them are interactive in some way - the basement has an armory with screens that you can use to find out how the guns worked, for example.

Nice building (right across the Holy Spirit Church), weird displays (from medieval artefacts over communist posters to... - really - the first energy saving light bulb ever used in the museum itself). One place on the long, long list of Tallinn places you can spent 30'-45'. Don't overlook the charming little alley next to the museum (you need to walk to the gate left of the museum), where the history of Estonia is litterallly written on the ground.

The collection is not very rich but provides a good idea in general about Estonian history and national psychology. There is a pretty good collection of guns from 18-21 century, in the cellar.

(Translated by Google) Estonian History Museum. A small museum in the Old Town. If you are traveling by car, it is a good idea to park it near the Maritime Museum. Cost - 1,50 euros for 30 minutes. If you still want to walk around the Old Town and the Navigation Museum, it might even be more profitable (if the hotel is not far away) to take a flat-rate taxi (like yandex, for example) or public transport. The museum has several interactive exhibits and a special children's room where all exhibits can be touched by hand. Quite a wide collection of weapons and coins that can only be viewed with the eyes and read information.

The mediaeval Great Guild Hall has always played an important role in the life of the city. The permanent exhibition at the History Museum, 'SPIRIT OF SURVIVAL. 11,000 years of Estonian History' (opened in 2011), helps to understand the uniqueness of the people who have lived in Estonia and introduces historical events that have affected them the most. The exhibition discloses the story of Estonian past through rooms with different topics, such as the Gun Room that tells about wars, the exhibition 'Power of the Elite' that talks about the Great Guild and mediaeval trade. You can also see different currencies and take part in historical events in the interactive time capsule.

A lovely little museum in a historic guild hall that provides an excellent overview of Estonian history, along with some background on the building. This is a great first stop on a trip to Estonia, as it provides ample context to sights in the country. It’s also enjoyable to wonder through and read about the building. A can’t miss for history fans, and strongly recommended for anyone else.

Lots of history of how Estonia finally became an independent country. Very complex history. I'd like to see photos of the excavation sites, i.e. when warriors were unearthed with bear claws and dogs buried with them near the boundaries of the country. Very complex history- maybe a timeliness would improve the jnderstabding. Nice senior discount.

The Great Guild Hall is one of the most historically significant Hanseatic era buildings that you will come across on this free Tallinn walking tour. The Gothic building dates to 1417 and has retained its original appearance through the centuries, although the windows were restructured in the late 19th century. The Great Guild Hall served as the home of the most powerful of the city’s guilds, uniting the German-speaking mercantile elite into an organization that effectively controlled Tallinn’s commerce. Its doors were closed to smaller merchants and artisans, who were instead forced to form lesser institutions. Besides being the gathering place for its members, the Great Guild was also the focus of many of medieval Tallinn’s social events. It was often rented out for wedding parties and court sessions and used to be the starting as well as the endpoint of most festive cavalcades. Today, the building is home to a branch of the Estonian History Museum whose collection of historical artifacts covers Estonian history from the Stone Age to the mid-19th century.

An eclectic museum, which won't suit everyone. Even still, with the Tallinn card it was worth a visit. They do have some good exhibitions, on different levels

  • 4/5 Tanner W. 1 year ago on Google
The main exhibit was closed and the rest seemed disjointed. The weapon room was great, the random artifact room with Egyptian stuff was also cool but didn't relate to anything, and the biggest exhibit open was just about the history of the building itself.

(Translated by Google) The basement was interesting, for example the flea catcher was new to me. The video illustrating the working principle of firearms was also interesting and instructive. The Freemasonry exhibition was not interesting - mostly text, a few pieces of clothing. The hall on the first floor was pointless - things from different periods were mixed up in the display cases. In the coin hall on the second floor, it would be good if the coins had a proper magnifying glass (can be attached to the display case with a chain), otherwise it is difficult to understand the pictures and lettering of the coins. You can also take 20 megapixel pictures of the coins with a telephone camera and print them out in large size, as a catalog next to the coins so that you can study what is written on the coins. Instead of showcase lighting, which sometimes does not work or is very dim, it would be cheaper and better for visitors to borrow LED flashlights. Whoever buys an eight-euro ticket will hardly steal a lamp for a few euros, and the return of the lamp can be made a prerequisite for exit. Using the phone's flashlight drains the battery quickly.

Interesting museum in the centre of Tallinn. The building is the old Guild House, the museum staffand are very helpful, and one of them was kind enough to take the time to tell us all about the history of the building and the exhibits, which really brought the museum to life. There is an audio guide that you can rent, or download via an app on your phone. I could not get the app to work, so really appreciated the explanations from the staff there.

Nice little museum. The two collections are worth mentioning: coin collection and firearms display at the basement. Also they have cute little details written on plates here and there about history and day-to-day lives of citizens. All items are well preserved.

An unexpectedly quaint museum. A meditative and introspective installation on Estonia's path to becoming Eesti. An easy, but informative examination of the concept of a guild hall. Better than expected exhibits of weapons/firearms and historical coins (the info-graphics on purchasing power were especially useful). About 1.5-2 hours is plenty of time. Paid 4 Euros a piece with the family package.

Museum is fairly small, but includes exhibits about the history of Estonia as well as a history of the building as well as a couple of temporary exhibits about famous Estonians. It was a little disorganised however had a mixture of exhibits, interactive quizzes, historical artefacts, videos and reading. It has plenty of places to sit. Some of the toilets smelled a little but the other was clean. It was definitely worth it as part of the Tallinn Card.
