戦国時代は難攻不落で知られていたものの豊臣秀吉の小田原征伐であえなく落城、そしてそのまま廃城となった金山城の遺構です。現在の群馬県太田市のあたりは新田氏の故地とされていて、城址内には新田義貞を祭神とする新田神社もあります。ただ、金山城がいつ頃からあるかはよくわかっていないようです。
現在の遺構は戦国時代の最初期に新田氏の一族とされる岩松氏によって築かれ、増改築をくり返しながら城主をかえ、最後は後北条氏によって整備されました。
往時の建物は失われて久しく、かつての堅城は石垣に名残をとどめるのみとなっていますが、丁寧な発掘と保存ゆえ期待以上の見ごたえです。
私が訪れたのはどうにもぱっとしない天気の日ではありましたが、見晴台からの眺望もよく、晴れていればさらに満足感が増したと思われます。ちゃんとした山登りの格好をした人も結構いましたが、難儀するような道もないので動きやすい格好+スニーカーで十分だと思います。いくつかある登山道のうち、ふもとにあるガイダンス施設からの道が便利かつ見どころも豊富なようです。
