It was amazing to visit Japan’s first school. We arrived before closing, so we were the only ones there. There was also a sighting of a fat cat named Hacchan. 🤍

The oldest school in Japan. It was said that it was built in Nara era, Heian era, or Kamakura era. But first officially it was recorded in 1439 in Muromachi era.

An ancient school that has been changed into a museum. Worth the ¥420 for a ticket. The garden is quite a nice view. You also get to go inside the buildings and most of the signs have an English translation. Sadly the library doesn't come with English translations for the signs and it's not allowed to use a smartphone inside to translate them yourself.

I’ve got to admit that this buildings site, which had been the nationally highest educational institution in Japanese academia such as Confucian ethics and Kokugaku from medieval for a long time, is not that entertaining or many things fun to watch, but is pretty elegant and very educational sightseeing spot you should visit at least once. I admire the local people who have cherished and been making great efforts to preserve not only solemn buildings and beautiful trees, but also the spirit and significance of the school’s existence. I humbly sense that that is still making this place well worth visiting.

Great little museum! Not much in English, however if you know a bit of Japanese and can follow through context, I suggest the tour if it’s available! It’s a really cool place about one of the first schools in Japan that wasn’t based off of the European education model. Very interesting info

The place has an appearance which invites visitors to sit down and study. But there are also fun things like the "Yuza-no-ki". For those who are familiar with the language, you can make a school kanji test.

The first school in Japan. Not too far from Tokyo. Beautiful scenery and informative features in English to understand some parts of Japan's history.

Was trying to find the resident cat Hacchan but it was nowhere to be seen. It’s a little hard to appreciate the place without a guide- there’s not enough English signage/explanations within. Still, you can walk around and appreciate the architecture and artifacts. I’m usually very interested and can spend a long time at museums but I was pretty much done with this place in 30 mins.

Really nice place to visit in Ashikaga, it's crazy how different it is from modern schools.

This place is the oldest school in Japan. The buildings are well maintained and are in good condition. You can explore inside, role play as a scholar and test your knowledge with Japanese characters by filling out the free test sheets provided in the classroom.

This historical landmark provides a sense of Japanese education back in the day. A combination of religious & moral studies with writing skills was taught and shaped the minds of young Japanese children. A remarkable site to behold.

The oldest college in Japan, and a beautiful one at that. I was visiting here with some friends, and we lucked out as a local volunteer approached us and gave us a free tour of the grounds. Very interesting place, definitely recommended for anyone who enjoys historical Japanese culture.
