It is said that the mountain was named Hodosan because the Japanese warrior Takeru encountered a raging fire while climbing the mountain to conquer the eastern part of Japan, and a giant dog jumped into the fire to extinguish it. Like Mt. Mimine, dog worship is popular, and worshipers come to pray for good luck and warding off evil spirits. The shaved ice shop on the approach to the shrine is famous 🎵

A really well cared for, clean and beautiful. Free parking at the bottom of the shrine. Not very stroller friendly because if the stairs and pebbles so baby carry or walking is best.

Absolutely worth coming to see the plum blossoms! It was my first time witnessing such beautiful and fragrant plum blossoms – truly delightful. Taking the ropeway round trip costs 600 yen, and if you come by car, parking is 500 yen. I highly recommend coming here to relax; starting from January, you can enjoy the plum blossoms, and they should be in full bloom by February.

This shrine is nice. I liked that the water basin was filled with flowers. They had really pretty charms and goshuin books. My friend and I went during the robai festival and the goshuinchō had a picture of the temple surrounded by snow and robai. It was really pretty.

I visited the shrine at the fire festival. Please don't forget Inari-sama Pollen was flying, lilies were blooming, and the weather was clear. There is also a dragon tree Please look for it

Hodosan shrine enshrines the Emperor Jimmu who founded Japan. I instantly felt an atmosphere, enhanced by the shinto music playing on the grounds, as we approached the torii of the shrine. The benevolence of the shrine is believed to be protection from disasters. It is a common place for hikers to pay homage as one of the three Kami (Gods / Deity) enshrined here is a mountain deity. But it is also because the shrine has a sub branch at the top of Mt Hodo - hikers pray at the base shrine and then climb to the top of Mt Hodo and devote there too. The architecture of the almost 2000 year old shrine is magnificent. The various auxiliary shrines are impressive too. And the grounds are beautiful. It is easily accessible by public transport too, as you can walk up from Nagatoro station in about 10 to 15 minutes.

Another top shrine visited in Japan, that although it is in popular Nagatoro near tourtisty Chichibu, it felt empty. The setting of it being at the beggining of a hill but in the middle of the woods made it feel very special. It is also very well taken for.

Beautiful scenery, very quiet and peaceful. Great place to get away from the city and just relax. On top of the hill theres a gondola that leads to the top of the mountain and a zoo!

Quiet place. The shrine is very beautiful and same with all places in Japan very clean and organize. A lot of parking spots. A quick tour will be sufficient.

Beautiful, well-maintained shrine. Momiji making it even better. 10-15 min walk from Nagatoro station, slightly uphill. We went on a Saturday morning a bit earlier than most of the crown. At around 11am as we were departing, more people are pouring in so I think it can get crowded on weekend peak hours.

👍 Is there a zoo around here? I didn't have any prior information and didn't expect it at all, but I had a lot of fun! (Sorry 💦) Climb the mountain by the ropeway next to Hodosan Shrine, pass Okumiya, and it is further back. If you're coming from Hodosan Shrine, you'll have to walk along the mounta...

👍👍 Extremely beautiful area. Came during the fall to check out the foliage but wish that we (1) came much earlier due to ridiculous traffic (static lineup on the exit ramp from the highway was at least 2 km long) (2) Rented/brought bikes A lot of great scenery along the river but beware of minimal pa...
