The hostel itself is so charming and close to all the great things in Tampa! Unfortunately I had a disappointing experience with George before I left :(There was an error with my booking and minus the fact he would hardly let me speak to get my concern out, when I told him I didn’t feel that the conversation was going well, he told me to leave the hostel and NEVER book with them again and slammed the door behind me. This was all at 11pm at night and I am still in shock that someone could act like that towards a guest. As a world traveler, I have never had anyone behave that way anywhere in the world. I hope that he is truly held accountable for his immature actions and that this doesn’t happen to another guest at Grams. It’s a shame that it is tolerated to begin with :(

Definite recommend to stay here! Nice, chill, eclectic vibe. Quirky. It's almost commonplace that you don't expect a great night's rest at a hostel. But let me tell you, the bed was comfy. The pillow was both fluffy and thick. (too bad if you like flat pillows) Even the towel, they provide a towel free of charge, was soft and good quality! I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and comfort of the linens LOL. The location was safe. I went for a jog close to sunset/evening solo, came across many other people in the neighborhood going for a run or walk. (I jogged north on Ola Ave until the river). I felt safe! There wasn't enough spaces for street parking, there's a park nearby with a parking lot. I parked there with no issues. I found front desk to be particularly helpful and friendly! If you're on the fence about staying here, it's a thumbs up from me.

The price is very fair so I’m not really complaining, but not sure what the high rating is about. It’s cramped, bit dirty, noisy, not enough space for roadside parking, and nothing exceeded my expectations. Again really not complaining. The host was very friendly and helpful. Nothing was wrong considering how little we had to pay. Just, don’t expect something outside of the price level when you see the high rating. It’s an honest price.

As with all hostels - they are all different and will be the ideal for some and not others… Pros: Friendly folks from all over Folks from a nice age span Clean bedding Unique vibe Folks staying there seemed to be enjoying themselves and one another Safe neighborhood to walk around (I walked from downtown and no concerns) Outdoor music and restaurants within a mile walk Cons: Drunk and high folks Terrible bathroom to folks staying ratio Half the individuals in my room were challenged with the key pad to enter Wait time to get into the property (I’ve traveled throughout all 50 US states, some territories, and close to 70 countries) and this was the first that it was uncertain if anyone would let me in after calling, texting and emailing)

Please understand that my review is based on this being a cute hostel type bed and breakfast (not a Hilton or Ritz Carlton) and the only reasons I couldn't give 5 stars is because there was no soap in my room and the shower never got hot, just warm. We stayed in a private room with a private bathroom, the shower was huge and it appeared the bedroom and bathroom had recently been remodeled. The bed was too soft to our liking, but it wasn't a rock so that made me happy! The place overall is quaint and eccentric. They have a shared kitchen area and supply everything you need to cook your own breakfast. I enjoyed exploring it and had the weather been cooler I would have hung out in the hot tub or any of the outdoor areas (there are quite a few). I will definitely stay again when the weather cools down.

After two years of backpacking through countless hostels in Australia and the US, I can confidently say this hostel stands out as one of the best I've ever experienced. Nestled in a property bursting with character, it offers a unique and welcoming atmosphere. The staff, a delightful blend of warmth and friendliness, elevate the stay to something truly memorable. Special mention to the owner, Bruce – a genuine gentleman whose commitment to ensuring an exceptional experience goes above and beyond. In a world where not all hostel workers are equally helpful, Bruce is a refreshing exception. I would give more than 5 stars if I could. Looking forward to returning for another fantastic stay!

I had the pleasure of staying in the Rock and Roll room, which is quite nice and has its own bathroom with shower. It's a comfortable room, and facing the outdoor kitchen and lounge area. Upon check-in, I felt immediately welcomed (thank you, Bruce!), and met some very interesting people during my stay. The location of the hostel is very central, and is walking distance to downtown and other attractions, and is pretty close to the airport. The hostel is very cool, eclectic, and full of interesting stories! And there is a bike in a tree... it'll make sense when you see it. The staff was lovely, and I want to give a personal thank you to Bruce Sr. and Bruce Jr., Sammy, Andrew, Lisa, Demi, Kieran, and Sunny the Cat for making me feel welcomed, and allowing me to have such an enjoyable stay. Awesome place, awesome people, and chill vibes. You won't be disappointed. Thank you, and I look forward to staying again! Hasta la proxima!

This hostel is as amazing as Gram Parsons music and talent. They treat you like family....the structure and layout of the complex winds around trees and contains authentic vintage Gram Parsons memorabilia. Also there are a dozen or more guitars and a classic piano..THAT WORKS. i found an acoustic guitar that i'm composing a song called Fallen Fruit...its a great place to visit and know about.

Stayed there for a couple nights but management was less than welcoming. Guy at the office seemed like a drunk . Declined to give me a receipt, maybe to evade taxes . Who knows . And as time progressed tried to play nice . The fridge in the kitchen smells .

I had a great time here! I stayed for one week and it was amazing. Hostel with hippie vibe Every night, Bruce would turn on the hot tub for us. There was a live jam in one of the days and it was great. There is also free breakfast included. Bruce (the owner) tries to get to know the guests! Very friendly. The internet speed is pretty good. I was working from there without any issues

Super cool vibe, lots of cool space to hang out outside, I took a bunch of pics of painted artwork on some of the spaces outside. I got the rock n roll room and it was immaculately clean and the bathroom was unexpectedly fancy and the bed I would like to bring with me everywhere lol. Mary and (blanking on his name) were excellent hosts making me feel at home. When I stayed, there were some college students from Amsterdam, a really cool couple that jammed out on guitar and it was just a very peaceful vibe! Coming back next time I’m in the area 💯

Gram's Place is very relaxing and the atmosphere is something I was not ready to leave at all lol I love how it's set up and how pleasant it feels to be on property 😁👌✅!! The rooms are really nice and the owner is friendly and a great personality. Thank you as me and my fiancee are looking very forward to coming back. The only thing I can see that needs improvement is the cable .

Such a cool atmosphere here, staff was great at replacing our TV in the rock n roll room when it wouldn't turn on in a timely manner. Check in was at 2 however our room wasn't ready until almost 3, staff was apologetic so it was still a good experience, had to wait a little while for clean towels. Great place to stay for fun.

You enjoy staying at this Hostel very friendly staff. This Hostel may look like old school 60s style but it's fine. The beds are alright just the rooms are a different story. But what great about this Hostel is you get meet people from other states and Countries. Had a great time interacting with people. This Hostel met my expectations in Tampa. I recommend.

Great place, and great visit - safe, comfortable, and convenient to Tampa at a great price! The owner / manager (Bruce? I'm terrible with names!) was very quick and helpful in getting me checked in. I stayed in the Amsterdam dorm with 6 beds. There were 3 other guests who were friendly and quiet. The bed was comfortable - I slept like a log! And I had room to hang my gear. The kitchen and shower were all nearby - convenient and just right. Unique decor, and great experience. I'll be back! Not sure what happened to my first review, so my apologies if this is a repeat.

No way this place is up to code. There is no heat in the rock n roll room except for a small portable heater that does nothing. There are holes in the walls of the bathroom that ate open to the outside! I tried calling for extra blankets and no answer. There is also no soap in the bathroom or at the coffee bar, nor were there cups!!

No rail for country dorm. Stairs (3 of them unusually awkward) Had to get up in the middle of the night to help my friend to get to the restroom and back into the room. I guess the ADA doesn't apply to this facility. Had to search for toilet paper the first night and request it the second night even though I brought it to the cleaning ladies attention and she quoted extras are under the sink. There was none under the sink! The guests refrigerator stunk badly, kitchen common area filthy especially under the stainless steel Joint connectors, only a used dirty sponge provided and no kitchen towel, pots scorched and dirty with residue food left on them, bathroom shower matt soaking wet and was there the three days we were there, found a credit card another guest lost under my bed, gave it to the owner who said oh she hasn't been here in a while which lead me to believe that that the room hasn't been cleaned properly since that guest left? I think that more effort should go into cleaning and to take that poor cat to the vet because it was sickly, emaciated, and scabby when I pet it.

Nice staff for letting me check in early. However I’ve got to say I couldn’t wait to get out of there I left at 7am. Shower had no warm water and just trickled out of the head… no water pressure at all. Someone staying next to me was yelling on the phone with it on speaker with the door wide open from 2pm to 6pm. I could hear the whole phone call. He/she then blared the TV until 3am I had to put my earplugs in. Woke up to people having sex later on that night at around 3am 🤮…. Place was run down and looked nothing like pictures. Wasn’t given towels. Would never go back here

I love these people. Unfortunately my birthday came in the summer of 2020 during the pandemic and it was very hard to get a place to host my small party of people. George definitely delivered he was so sweet and accommodating. Really cool dude. The decor was really cool eclectic and artsy which is right up my alley. It was a really cool bridge thing that went around the hostel so you can chill above it. Took some really sick photography. And I got to enjoy their little hot tub thing. I think I was in a jazz room which was cozy and cute. When I come to visit Tampa I'll definitely be staying here again. Going to miss you guys ♥️

My experience at Gram's place was unique to any hotel/ travelers experience I have had in the past. The 3 or 4 days I stay at the hostel were very peaceful and welcoming. I enjoyed watching football in the TV dinning area with guest and management. Management was always easy to get a hold of, professional, and accommodating. The aesthetics of the place were surprising in a good way, sometime like fun a 70's vibe, and the outdoor shower was an interesting experience. Grams also has great pricing options for both private and dorms room. I highly recommend staying at Grams for anyone visiting Tampa or in a brief transition.

This is definitely one of the coolest and most relaxing hostels I have ever stayed at! The staff is super friendly and the variety of sleeping arrangements is out of this world, I got to stay in the disco room (one of the bunk rooms) and had a very pleasant experience. I was able to meet a ton of cool and friendly people from a variety of counties and walks of life, so many stories under one very special roof. The hot tub is wonderful, the kitchen is fantastic, the showers have great heat and water pressure, and the food is so fantastic it leaves me speechless (you can really taste the love). One of the coolest things is the view from the watch tower 😎 This is a 11 out of 10 for me and I will definitely be staying here again next time I need accommodations in the Tampa area, and heck I may even become a frequent face ^_^

I got in to check in at 7pm and called someone to let them know I was at the front gate. They came out quick to let me in! Sadly I was only here for one night before I needed to catch the bus early in the morning but this seems like such an awesome place. There was tons of outdoor seating but it was way too cold to use it. All around great experience and the staff helped me with any questions and got me an extra blanket for the cold night ahead.

Cigar Smoke ! really loved the vibe and how easy it was to talk to people. Owners are superfriendly and helpful . It was just great until the owners both started smoking big fat cigars 10 feet away from us without asking.. Since I have asthma I had to make a hasty retreat to hide in our room for the rest of the evening. Not fun. If cigar Smoke doesn't bother you, go you'll have a blast. If you're like me sadly stay away.

They call this a hybrid B&B and hostel. They do have private rooms with private bathrooms as well as shared sleeping spaces. They do provide breakfast ingredients, but you have to assemble your own meal and that means cook it yourself. They provide everything you need to cook, you just have to clean up after yourself. Our room was clean and the bed was comfortable, however the shower walls and floor had someone else's hair on it so we bypassed the shower. We could have used the outdoor shower which seemed clean enough but it would have been too inconvenient for us so we opted out of the shower experience. We told management about it (and had pics to prove) and they were very sorry and offered us 20% off our next visit. I think for the price, it's worth coming back. This place is not wheelchair accessible and difficult to navigate if you use any type of assistive device, so I would stay clear of this place of you have any physical disabilities.

Pretty cool place overall and the manager was super nice. There were a few bunks that were not taken and they put me right next to a guy who was snoring so load and his phone kept going off all through the night. He was sleeping so hard that I didn't want to wake him up. The other thing was the shower was outside with no AC. This made it impossible to shave and shower without sweating like crazy even though I took a cold shower. Other than that the place was pretty cool overall.

The location isn't too bad, it's definitely an interesting place to stay. Price isn't too bad comparable to a hotel, but there's competitive airbnbs that are cheaper. I stayed in the Folk room, heard some weird noises from the trash can. Turned out to be a huge roach. Not judging, they exist all over in Florida. But might wanna spray. Bed was a little uncomfortable. People were nice but definitely not the typical hostel traveler types. Maybe I came during a weird off period or something. The staff were nice folks, only thing that sucked was check out. It was at 11 am and I didn't get back until 11:20 to grab my stuff. So instead they did it for me and had my suitcase in the office. I understand needing to get folks out but it wasn't that long. Not a terrible stay but not a great one either. There's lots of potential but might be best if traveling with someone vs solo.

Last night I had a reservation, no one answered the bell at the gate or after a couple of attempts answered the phone number they ask you to call if a staff person doesn't answer the bell. If I could give them a 0, I would. Sounds like some people have a great experience. Others like me have had experiences with their unprofessionalism. Their unprofessionalism made for a long night scrambling for a hotel. Beware, you could be stranded

This is not a fancy smancy hotel where you are treated like a nameless, faceless guest. This is a place where you are treated like and old friend. It has a cool vibe that feels more like a second home than just a place that you are staying in while you visit Tampa. With a selection of room arrangements you can find accomodations that fit your needs. Bruce is welcoming, kind, and helpful. He will take care of you whether you need something for your room, suggestions on what to do in Tampa, or just have a conversation. I will definitely be returning in the future.

Was in a rock and a hard place and had to make a last minute reservation. The owner accepted me in and made the whole sign up process very easy and not complicated to follow. Dorms were nice and had a nice warm bed already made to sleep in at night. Place is not far from downtown tampa and is not far from attractions and speakeasys. The entire property itself is really cool almost as if it's a adult tree house has roof top balcony and a hot tub to sit back and relax in. People were very nice and welcoming and easy to get along with in the co-ed dorm. People even helped me find a lost item as they gave it to staff and they gave it back to me. Overall it's a really good spot to stay at especially if you're not in town for too long and need an inexpensive and no hassle place to stay. Has great amenities for an inexpensive price and cool chill vibe that goes along with staying at this place. The place is good to be at if you don't want to be to far from everything and have a nice place to unwind and lay back after a long day. Would come back if time permits and have the chance to go back and stay. I would definitely recommend to family and friends if they come to tampa.

The locations is very close to Ybor City about a 7 minute drive. The blues rooms is very quaint and has a private bathroom with shower. This is an older building so there isn't much sound insulation. It was at a great price for the location though. The staff are very nice and friendly. There is a cute in ground hot tub/jacuzzi on site. I wish we had time to use it. If you're looking for a simple place to stay close to the night clubs I would recommended this place. Parking is directly next to it at the park. The photos are of the Blues room, jacuzzi and deck on the top of the building.

What a great space! Bruce, the owner, was very welcoming and helpful. I enjoyed our chats, he gave me tips for exploring the area. And It was nice to chat with him and learn about the history behind the hostel. There is free food to cook for breakfast, offered in the morning and coffee. The beds were comfortable and all amenities worked. By the piano and the spa in the common area were my favorite places to hang out! I’ll be back to stay when I’m back in town. A more welcoming stay then a hotel could ever do. Thanks Bruce!

Gram's Place is nestled next to a beautiful cemetery and recreational fields on an up-and-coming neighborhood just a 15 minute walk from the River Walk. Much of the hostel is outside, including a kitchen, bathroom, hot tub, and shower. Watching the steam from my shower swirl towards the stars was a highlight of my hostel stay. There is an eclectic mix of decorations and the hostel has a wide range of outside seating, bikes for rent, and everyone who works there is genuine and wants you to have the best stay possible. Room rates were very reasonable. My buddy and I stayed in the "Adventure Room" and really liked it's location and the ability to control the temperature. This is also one of the only hostels I've ever stayed in that had the beds made for us when we arrived. Wish we could have stayed longer!

I stayed here twice. Once in 2015 when I first moved to Tampa and was waiting on my first apartment to be ready. Then again in 2020 when I was in between apartments and had no place to stay for 3 days. Even though the amenities are as bare bones basic as it gets, I enjoyed my time there in 2015. Mostly because of the really chill vibe and the charming decor. Unfortunately in 2020 I had a bad experience that soured it for me. There were dead carpet beetles all over the blues room. At least a half dozen of them. But worse yet I got bit by a spider in the bed. My foot swelled up and I stripped the sheets and saw another spider scurry away. The mattress was about 20+ years old with the wooden boards underneath falling thru the box spring. The front desk guy (not the owner) had an attitude with me when I told him. I too itched for weeks after and had to get a prescription for Permethrin (a cream that treats scabies). Of course the owner will vigorously deny this but I am not the first or second or third review to mention this. It is not a grand customer conspiracy - the place is unsanitary. It's really too bad. If they would overhaul the bedding with new mattresses and new linens, and would commit to a deep clean of the floor once a month, this would be an awesome place to stay even if you were local and just needed a few days with some light music and cute scenery.

  • 5/5 Josue J. 5 years ago on Google
This is as quirky as it gets in the world of hostels. After experiencing hostels in several places around the world, Gram's place decided that I had more to experience. The walls are decorated with music memorabilia and artifacts, magazines covers and pictures of the once famous. The common areas are decorated in a Margaritaville-meets-American Pickers style, with plenty of 70s and 80s Americana dotting every corner of the place. Small, cozy sleeping areas make for a comfortable night sleep. Warning: this place is not for the glam traveler. But if you're an adventurous backpacker that prefers ambience over bird shapped towels, you can't go wrong with Gram's.

Nestled just outside downtown in a quiet neighborhood, Gram's Place is may be as unique of a hostel as they come. Mix your average neighborhood home with a tree house, and a few courtyards and you get a good feel for the place. Colorful, classic, and eclectic decor is found throughout this place. All of the staff is very friendly, helpful, and wonderful host during our 2 days here. If you can catch the manager Rhonda, when the mood hits her just right, you may find her in the kitchen baking a fresh batch of cookies. Have a seat at the kitchen table or the livingroom, pick up a guitar to strum, make a fresh pot of coffee, and you may can snag a cookie for yourself ;) They have laundry on site, a soaking pool, a few courtyards, private and mixed dorm rooms, a byob bar, outside bathroom & shower, and a couple of treetop lookouts to relax at. Also, BREAKFAST is included: eggs, coffee, some fruit, bread, pancake mix, and a few jams and peanut butters. We visited in July and stayed in Amsterdam, a 6-bed mixed-dorm room. The beds were more on the springy side, good length if you're under 6 ft tall, without any privacy curtains, and we slept okay. My mate had a bit more trouble sleeping than I did. It was pretty humid while there, and the first night I woke up and had to ask for an extra fan for the room - this made a huge difference in the overall room temp (we were sleeping in the middle of the upper room). We just needed a crash spot for a few days, and I'm glad we chose to stay here! Good experience :) ***Extra Tips*** •Temperature: a private room may be a better option with it having it's own cooling unit if you're worried about temperatures. •Mosquito's: we had no issues or problems with them despite other recent reviews.

Elisabeth from Amsterdam I have always had a good time in Gram's Place. The first time I came with the Amtrack train. You have a kitchen in the hostel where you can make your breakfast every day. The breakfast items like eggs, pancake mix, fruit, coffee and tea are there. You cook your own breakfast, just clean up everything yourself afterwards ;-) There is also a lovely heated spa with bubbles. The wifi is very strong and can be used everywhere in the garden and inside. Bruce the owner is very helpful. He recommends restaurants, supermarkets and nightlife. For example The River Walk during the day and Ybor City at night. In short: Gram’s Place is a wonderful place to chill out and meet new people. Definitely recommended!

I have traveled around the world and stayed in a lot of very special places. "Grams" will definitely stay in my mind as one of the extra special ones. Thank you for a fantastic stay! Maria & Erik

What a treat! 1st view this place has an awesome vibe: combination Key West & Provincetown. Totally eclectic design inside too. Since I chose a one room it's comfortable with a designer bath

It is literally the best hostel I have ever stayed. Everyone is extremely friendly and helpful. The place offers a lot such as free kitchen stuff. They have a bar and an open patio to sit and chat. It is also super clean and has a nice environment.

Enjoyed staying here until it became very uncomfortable when Brce JR. thought he could try to date me. I came for a clean and comfortable place to stay a bit not for a date or romance. Not professional at all.

Absolutely cool and awesome place to stay and chill, good vibes, and good people. They even upgraded the private room when I got here. Will definitely come back.

This is one of the best hostels I have ever stayed. The atmosphere, setup, and price were all amazing. I met some people while staying here that I will be keeping in contact with. One of the managers George had a lot deep talks with me and he is so chill and relaxing to talk to you. They will even occasionally cook you a free dinner and I went an excursion that was offered by them to the beach that was a lot of fun. Would recommend to anyone.

Really cool place with a really cool vibe and lots of little indoor/outdoor nooks to hang out by yourself and do some work or to hang out with a group have a drink and make some new friends. The rooms were clean. The owner was really cool. The location was pretty close to everywhere I wanted to go! I will def be back next time in Tampa!

As a person who appreciates art and music culture this hidden oasis makes all others look terrible. Its unique, safe, fun and Ruby is always there making the place feel like home. If you're travelling and need a place with good people and a home away from home atmosphere, this is the place to stay.

Great place! Love that we could have our own room but still had the social aspect of the hostel hangout areas. Everyone super friendly, very easy, clean. Our light didn't work in the bathroom and Bruce came over & fixed it right away. Also loved that Bruce had tons of suggestons for things to do locally. Oh & hot tub was a huge plus! Very clean.

Top tier accommodation in a funky, eclectic, bed and breakfast style, ultra friendly, clean, super safe, family hostel mixing of the generations in a ‘road freaks (1970’s overland Asia travelers)’ shared home of jazz and Woodstock vibes. We enjoyed the Jacuzzi and open areas as well.

We made our booking to stay at Gram's Place on Hostelworld, but when we showed up the evening of our reservation, we were told that there were no available rooms for us. We received no help at all in trying to find an alternate place to stay. We had no choice but to drive back home that same night. I would strongly caution anyone against booking through Hostelworld or attempting to stay at this location.

All was good except for the bed: unbelievably uncomfortable, even for a hostel. I stayed at the cheapest hostel in Miami after this and my bed there was 10 times more comfortable. I itched for a week and a half after staying here, and I think it might have been due to bed bugs. It’s a shame because the property itself is very cool and the employees friendly. I can’t bring myself to go back. Too bad it’s the only hostel on the FL west coast.

When we arrived here we were greeted by a nice older man, he checked us in and gave us our room code and took us to our room. upon seeing the room it was a very small space with a bunk bed, table and single sink , the restroom was located outside(not an issue) later on we realized there was what looked to be mold on the ceiling, we were only staying the night and tried to disregard as we didn’t want to cause any issues. the next morning before we left we took the sheets off the bed to make it easier on the cleaner and found large amounts of black mold on the sheets. this was very shocking and unacceptable. we were in a rush and couldn’t find anyone upon checkout so we left. if you stay here check everything, this is absolutely disgusting. i have attached pictures below.
