If we could give more than 5 stars just once in Maps, I certainly would have used it for that restaurant. Where do I start ? ๐Ÿ˜ this is the story of an Algerian guy ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ who fell in love with Zanzibar so he decided to take a challenge and opened the first and unique North African cuisine restaurant in east Africa. The cuisine is just soooo delicious and we appreciate every bite of it. The place is very clean & the music so good. I highly recommend it!

We had a nice evening at Al Casbah. The lamb cuscous was tender and delicious. Compared to most restaurants in Stone Town Al Casbah has a really stylish ambience. The owner Sherif gave us a good explanation how the food is prepared. You could literally feel his passion for food and his restaurant. If you are searching for a nice restaurant in Stone Town - then go to Al Casbah.

I ate here twice. food was very tasty, but uneven - soup was ordered with both visits and it tasted different on each of them. I also didn't like the way the Algerian owner treated local service people - shouting at them & being unpolite. a weird remainder of local history. all in all - for the food it's worth a visit

Outstanding food -- maybe the best North African I've ever had -- and friendly service that makes the separate tables feel like one big group dining together. The location on the main road is a bit hectic and dusty, but go on a breezy evening and order some cold tea or watermelon-mint juice and you'll feel right at home... and maybe get a cat (Cous Cous) on your lap.

What a very special treat coming to this restaurant! It was our first time experiencing the flavors of Algerian cuisine. As we were looking for something different to noshe on in Zanzibar, we were approached by the owner, Cherif, to come in and try his restaurant. As he explained and described his dishes, I could hear the passion that this individual has for his cuisine. He is proud and touts that his restaurant has no palm oil, additives, and nothing artificial in his foods. Every ingredient is fresh and never frozen. We started with the Sekhsou Ma'dnous salad. It is like tabouleh but with gentle and delicate textures. Highly recommend ๐Ÿ‘Œ. Then we had to try the Algerian Bourek. These little pastry pockets filled with potatoes and your choice of meat were freshly made and simply amazing. We also enjoyed a traditional Algerian soup called Sharve Thazgourt with lamb. I can't explain how savory and deep flavored this was. It was just very wonderful. Our main entrees were the Couscous Lovers with lamb and the Lamb Tajeen. I need to point out that there was not one hint of "gaminess" in any of the lamb dishes. He roasts the lamb for hours. The lamb is locally sourced from Arusha. We also tried traditional Algerian tea, both hot and cold. The black tea, fresh mint, and herbs were tantalizing to my taste buds. I am a tea lover, and this hit all of my favorite tea-fushions. I enjoyed my tea cold without the sweetness. They pour the tea table-side and pour it back into the pot three times to ensure that all the ingredients are mixed thoroughly and aerated. The owner, Cherif, is quite multi-faceted. He speaks at least 6 different languages and has a wonderful story to tell about his international experiences. I noticed that the clientele was not only local but also many Europeans as well. I hope that your experience at al Casbah will be as rememberable as our was. Bon Appรฉtit!

Let me put into simple terms: differently from what you read in posts and blogs, food around zanzibar is average to bad. They have nice fresh sea food everywhere, but most of the time they have no clue what to do with it. So you spend most of your time eating lobster and prawns (which, dont get me wrong, is incredible), sided by bad french fries, vegetables, rice, or (terrible) mashed potatoes. Always. No technique, no creativity. Same dishes everywhere. And then you find this place. This is REAL food. The chef is an Algerian guy doing his best to make FOOD. Nicely cooked, well seasoned, delicious. It was the best lamb I had for a long time in my life - if not the best. And I'm picky with food. Plus, they have good coffee. Which, surprisingly, is also something very rare around the island. If you are around and tired of eating the same food every day, you can't go wrong with this place.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at an Algerian restaurant in Zanzibar, and I must say that it was one of the most delightful culinary experiences I have ever had. Not only was the food absolutely delicious, but the owner of the restaurant was incredibly helpful and welcoming, making the entire experience truly unforgettable. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with a warm smile and a friendly welcome from the owner, who immediately made us feel at home. He went above and beyond to make sure that we were comfortable and had everything we needed, including providing excellent recommendations on what to order and explaining the different dishes and flavors. The food itself was nothing short of spectacular. From the savory and perfectly seasoned lamb tagine to the mouthwatering couscous, every dish was expertly prepared and bursting with flavor. The bread, baked fresh in-house, was a particular standout and paired perfectly with the various dips and spreads. But what truly sets this restaurant apart is the incredible hospitality of the owner. He was so attentive to our needs, taking the time to make sure we were enjoying every aspect of our meal and offering additional recommendations based on our tastes and preferences. He was more than happy to answer any questions we had about the dishes or the culture of Algeria, and he even offered to share some recipes with us! Overall, I cannot recommend this Algerian restaurant in Zanzibar highly enough. The food is absolutely delicious, the atmosphere is welcoming and cozy, and the owner is an absolute gem. If you are looking for a unique and memorable dining experience, look no further than this incredible establishment.

Awesome vibe, great music but more importantly INCREDIBLE food. Amongst other dishes, I choose the Lamb Tajine. Remarkable. Some of the softest meat Iโ€™ve had in a very long time. The owner Chรฉrif is a massive legend. A big ball of energy. Loved getting to know his story. Will be back one day, no doubt.

Unique culinary experience in Paje, where your five senses will be awakened. The lamb tajine & Dolma were 3 Michelin Stars, the bread was unreal, the Algerian tea and Samsa Chรฉrif took them to the next level. 1. Everything is home made. 2. Restaurant Al Casbah is a museum and should be classified best Algerian ambassador in Tanzania & Africa 3. Chรฉrif the owner is insane he designed everything by himself tables, chairs, even platesโ€ฆ...re-invited the traditional Algerian cuisine. 4. Lovely staff :-)๐Ÿซถ

Great food, highly recommended! The owner is super friendly, he greeted us and gave recommendations on the menu. The menu itself has a story printed at the beginning, which was a nice touch. He makes a big accent on the quality of everything that is made there. We really enjoyed iced tea on a hot afternoon and loved both types of couscous (lamb and fish). Waiting time was ok. The place has an open terrace at the street, so it can be hot and a bit noisy.

Who knew you could eat such delicious food from the other side of the Sahara in Zanzibar. Such attention to detail from the custom designed furniture, to the menus with vintage photos and , well, the food! Algeria, karibu Zanzibar.

Tasty food. The restaurant is on the busy street and it is noisy. The owner was very friendly and sociable, but did not accept payment by credit card or dollars, only local currency. They don't serve alcohol.
