New owners The food is so much better than what was being cooked there previously. So relieved to see a fresh face of ownership who actually care what kind of food they are putting out to their customers. Also the staff are very friendly

I have been to Charles Street for the last couple of years and was always happy with the food and service. I have to say, I was horribly disappointed with my Sunday night order. Not only did they not have everything we ordered online, but I had to make a return trip as they completely forgot all our fish order. There were three young girls working there, one who was eating in the back when I came back for the second time. The food was soggy and tasteless. Unfortunately, I don't think your staff has the experience to run your fish and chip shop to the level you have been respected for in the past. I won't be returning here.

Let’s hope the new owners are better than the last. We have been regular customers at Charles street for a number of years and always found it very good but unfortunately, the last several months have left us very disappointed. The fish is soggy and chips not cooked through and no seasoning applied. Not to mention the still frozen curry roll! Plus The gravy has always been cold. Also the wait time being 40 mins when told it would be 20. (40 mins for soggy fish?!) Let’s hope the new owners can do better.

Portions of different fish all wrapped together. $1 overcharge on a squid ring, chips nice but not great. No salt, napkins in the bag. Staff are friendly and store is stylish but that doesn't fix it sadly.

I am pleased with the service and good quality food but some how I felt a bit left out when I wanted to pick my own food and just because I am not a local but a different nationality, the lady at the counter recognised as an uber eats driver without any hesitation. Profiling a customer is a very important factor and may lead to a lot of problems. Hence a training must be provided to each and every employee before coming on the front line. Thank you.

Waited half an hour after ordering online which said it would be ready in 15 mins. Ended up with a free stale kids burger due to not having enough potato fritters and got garlic chips drowned in garlic butter which should have been in a box not paper as it soaked all the way through the paper. On top of all that we didn't receive the sauce that we ordered! Don't recommend

Our go to fish and chip shop! The burgers are so good! Massive, tasty and good value for money! The all sauces chips are big in size and perfect ratio of sauces. Highly recommend

We stopped in at the Westshore Cafe after being at the Napier Airport with the grandkids and we were greeted by a lovely lady at the counter. She offered lolly pops to our grandchildren and said this helps sometimes with the wait. There was no wait, service was exceptional and the meal was sensational. Huge pieces of fish and perfectly cooked chips. Hot dogs on a stick were delicious too. We will definately be back for more!

Wouldn't recommend getting anything battered, the batter is very thick and doey, all my batterd goods were not pleasant to eat. The $10 packs are good value but the other stuff on the menu isn't worth the money due to the quality of the batter. The scoops are large but unfortunately the chips aren't very good. Nothing was crunchy either. Was hoping to find a new local but sadly it won't be this place

The food was great, but only having really expensive fish was a problem, next time I might go somewhere with better pricing and stock.

Came here at 7:30 and was turned away hungry and disappointed because the grill had already been cleaned. Another NZ business with employees more interested in getting home early rather than earning money it seems. So far the only places actually open until the times advertised seem to be the Thai, Indian and Turkish restaurants - much healthier options anyway! Will adjust my review the next time I do get to place an order.

Best fish and chips in town

Great little fish and chip shop off the beaten track. Food is cooked from fresh which makes the difference to the usual precooked stuff other places. Amazing amount of chips for a scoop and fish was yummy and moist. See the photo!

I ordered two packs of healthy fish and chips (grilled fish, salad, and kumara fries). I asked them if the two packs were meant to be eaten by two people with two servings of fish, and they said yes. Unfortunately, I received one small serving size, like one side of small fish meat plus a small half of one side of fish meat. I'm so disappointed to pay 25 dollars for the servings they gave, which is not enough for even one person. They claimed that the serving was due to the size of the fish they received, and I feel like the way they delivered the message was my fault for having the small serving. This is the third time I ordered fish and chips from Charles. I can genuinely say that the quality is substandard from what I have tried before from their takeaway because the kumara is a bit bitter or had an after taste which it seems like they used a super used oil. I will not come back again.

Just purchased Crumbed Terikihi and kumera chips...for 2 pieces fish and a scoop of kumera chips $22.30. It was a generous scoop and the fish was also generous. This was the best fishnchips we have had. Cooked to perfection, not greasy at all, fish was moist and fresh and no oil/fat after taste plus panko crumb coating was pleasantly crunchy. Very impressed! The owner and staff were pleasant too. We will definitely be back. These new owners need to be supported, they deserve it. Sorry no photo.. we sat by the beach in the car and gobbled it all up...none for the pesky seagulls even!

Oh dear! This used to be our favorite fish and chip shop but had a very bad experience last week ... the fresh fish we chose was so overcooked it was ruined as was the two oysters we treated ourselves to! They were also terribly overcooked. So disappointing as charles street used to be very nice.

Sadly was not that happy with our order.. garlic chips wernt cooked properly and drowned in butter and the burgers were over cooked and buns dry. This used to be a really great shop a few years back.

Well was our first time there tonight, thought we give it go !!! Order - chips ,fish ,battered mussels and a steak burger The whole lot had no flavor and maybe a pinch or no salt on the whole order . You need to change something,your batter, oil definitely change the chips . Taste your food!!! Steak in burger was also chewy. If your burgers are what make your establishment ,just do the burgers n fries. Take this as constructive criticism Cheers

Sorry but is there such a thing as a half of star. Not impressed with the long wait lots of other order got called in front of ours but when we got our fish and chips it was like they had been sitting for ages. Batter was thick and uncooked underneath. Seagulls will get a good feed tomorrow with all the soggy chips.

I ordered 2 x a Steak/ Bacon & Egg Burgers. The steak was Schnitzel and it was so tough I couldn't eat it. I was charged $24. They charged an extra $8 for the bacon on top of the $24 already charged !!! Way too expensive for what I received !!!

Was told this was a great place to go so thought we would try it i brought the $45 pack not happy the spring rolls were cold and watery and the hotdogs over cooked fish and chip whereok i wont be back ;(

Had the gurnard and chips here, both tasted great, fish was fresh and batter not too heavy! Fried to perfection and not too oily! Shop was clean and the online order process made the whole experience very easy and seamless. Would definitely visit again next time I’m in town!

Usually amazing honest burgers - a price leap from last year .... but when your buns have obviously been frozen a huge huge disappointment. Chips with all sauces to die for & burger fillings brilliant .... please don't cut corners with the buns :(

Warm welcome. Young man behind the counter ran a very smooth operation. Wearing a facemask he cooked gurnard fish in batter which was soooo juicy and tasty however the chips did not match the fish as they were a mixed bag of dry, pale, brown, overcooked and did not have a freshness about them hence the four stars.

The best fish n chips....and mushy peas in town. Love it. So efficient, ordering online is a must.

Had lovely fresh food over a few months from here. However purchased a Greek salad yesterday after asking the woman there what feta they used and oil etc. I had a lovely salad before this latest one. Tipped it on the plate... a few measly pieces of tomatoe ..a tiny piece of feta and a few scraps of red onion and cucumber. Pathetic. Very disappointed. Ripped off.

We've been here about 4 times, whenever we pass through Napier. Great fish and plentiful ok chips. Call and order 20 minutes ahead to avoid a wait!

Great fish and chips only issue I have is 3 times I've ordered on line (for the convenience of not having to wait) and each time I arrive to collect its not ready I make sure I arrive 10min after the time I've stipulated on line and I travel 30km to pick up and it's not ready usually another 8 to 10min waiting time.

Only 1 tiny sad point I didn’t get the date chutney with my haloumi chips so had my homemade tomato relish instead. Most expensive fish n chips takeaway we have ever had. Two pieces of Tarakihi $5.80, one was made up of four small old pieces smelt and tasted horrible(why even bother to sell this?) Other piece was very good. Hoki at $5 was just as good. Mussels were good. Two scoops of chips were more like three scoops and very good.
