Went here for dinner and not disappointed! Service here is excellent and friendly. We had 2 mains, 2 desserts and 2 drinks and total of our meal was 70: which for the generous portions and delicious food was a steal! We walked in without a reservation which didnt seem to be a problem on a Friday Night. If I am ever back in the Hawkes Bay I will definitely be back.

Awesome menu and cosy, relaxed vibe. Tried both vege mains, a lasagna and an eggplant curry served with brown rice. The lasagna was super tasty with impressive layers! Highly recommend a side of chips to dip into the curry. Definitely worth stopping in.

This is a wonderful place for a meal. Went in for dinner found that the menu had plenty of options and the prices were really reasonable. Would definitely come back. The service is also amazing.

The Puketapu has returned after the Cyclone Gabrielle and its still got it. The pub is still as popular as ever. They are friendly and the food is great. Of course we will return.

I took my girl (Brooke Parsonson) to this place and she had the worst time, I could tell. When the disrespectful waiter asked her how her food was, she had no choice but to spit in his face. She took two bites of her Jerk Spiced Chicken Thighs (GFA) and exclaimed "Now I know why they call it the 'Jerk Spiced'! Because this chef is trying to jerk me around!" Naturally we were outraged and in a hapless attempt of the classic 'plant a hair in the soup trick' we were politely asked to leave the restaurant. In fact, the service was so bad she was even forced to yell insults at full volume to all those present in the tavern. Atmosphere was nice.

Absolutely great atmosphere, food was brilliant. I think the staff were the best I’ve come across in a very long time. We eat out often from Auckland to Wellington. Also the Milton Villa Rose was very nice

Had a family dinner for my grandson’s birthday and was wonderful experience. The food was definitely value for money and my compliments to the chef. I had lambs fry and bacon and it honestly was the best I have had in a restaurant. All the other meals were just as great. The meals were sent out as close together with the group of 20 as possible. And all the staff were awesome. Thank you to all concerned

Great townie service in a real rural setting. The drive out is worth it and it's not too far. When we dined, we were welcomed and advised that the orders already placed meant a significant delay. We were offered kiddie packs to keep little ones amused and the promised wait was actually hake that expected. The kitchen was really busy. And the food was good value. I love it when staff acknowledge and include the kids. Well done team.

All our meals were super. They were extreemly busy so a bit of a wait but that wasnt a problem to us as we were not in a hurry. This place is alqays good and our friends from Auckland were very impressed.

We went on a really busy night. Team were bubbly, chatty and had a laugh with us, even though really busy. Food was really good potions, really tasty and good value for money. Everyone (5 adults) really enjoyed! Would recommended booking, I know some hospo is struggling, not the puketapu, looked like a full house. Thanks team

Went for Father's day. Very noisy in restaurant. Very busy.... always a good sign that the food was good! Unfortunately couldn't follow omit instructions ... twice we asked for things to be left off the plates, but on arrival at table they were on plate. Could have been a disaster had we been allergic.... However food was good, steak sandwich, puketapu burger and snitzel enjoyed. Large pork belly beautiful but not enough veges. All in all a good experience.

One of the best little country pubs in the district. Lots of history, good beers, great food and cheerful staff. Right next to a good cycle trail and plenty of parking for the passing motorist.

We had an amazing night recently to bid farewell to a couple of well-loved locals - what a night!! The food was amazing, best shrimp cocktail, lamb shanks & creme brulee I've ever had, and I've been on the planet quite a while!!! Lovely atmosphere, love what they have done after Gabrielle, and the staff were lovely!!! Will now be our go-to place when we want something special and / or have guests to entertain. Brilliant!!!

100% the best place for casual drinks and food. Such friendly staff and even though they were very busy the food arrived in a timely manner, perfectly cooked and well proportioned. The band they had was awesome too. Absolutely would recommend

We had a table of 16 on a pretty busy day. All meals came out in a reasonable time from the first meal hitting the table... fairly positive that everyone enjoyed their meal as there were pretty much no leftovers from the good size portions. As most tables were reserved when we arrived at noon we were glad we had made a booking a lot earlier. It went from a few people in the bar to packed in a short time and stayed like that for at least a couple of hours. so I would recommend making a booking... my chicken was a little dry but very yummy and I would order it again. Definitely worth the trip out for a great lunch...

Unfortunately a mix of good and bad for this review, firstly the service was great from our friendly waitress, and the atmosphere of the place was also great. My wife ordered an entrée and I ordered a main, there was about 15 mins between the 2 dishes being delivered, which meant we both had to sit there watching the other person eat, not ideal. My wife got the "Lamb shoulder croquettes with pea puree and mint salad". 3 croquettes in total, only one had lamb in it, the other 2 had mashed kumera in them, the menu didn't say anything about kumera croquettes and had she had known this would have picked something else. The mint "salad" consisted of 2 small pieces of mint leaves and that was it, the pea puree was tasty although the whole dish was over-seasoned with salt. The Puketapu burger was yum, I couldn't fault this, the chips it came with would have also been yum if they weren't over-seasoned also with salt. We shared the "cinnamon apple fritters" and overall they were nice, it just would have been better if they have had some apple in them, only managed to find a couple of small chunks.

What a buzzing place. We sat outside, nice people, food was fab. The meals were more than substantial!

Food is beautiful in taste and presentation. Decor is a bit tired but homely. In the restaurant part. Good coffee too.

Great place for a cold one and some nice food. A number of bike trails come past here too. We came out on one of the bike trails from Taradale, roughly 10kms of easy riding in both directions. Our food was really good and so was the service.

Nice short drive (two options) or flat riverside bike to this country pub. Exceptional staff, amazing food (try the morrocan salad) cold beer and nice atmosphere, well worth a visit.
