My first time here for dinner. And I very quickly realised that it is not really a dinner place. It’s more like a wine bar. And they serve you food / tappas but the price for the serving size is astronomical. I had the eye fillet for 28$ and this was a tiny piece of steak cut into 4 pieces approx. also had prawn dumplings 4 for 22$. And last crab (which was battered) 2 pieces for 27$. A drink for 19$. Taste wise it was ok, nothing special to be honest. There are better places in napier for a similar price range where not only one feels full but for this price gets a proper meal. Total bill 96$ and then I had to go have a burger to fill me self up :) Unfortunately this is not a dinner place, more of a snack place and that too extremely expensive. I would not recommend it !!

LOVED this little wine bar and shop. Popped in for a nightcap and ended up with a drink AND a show. Lovely people, cool space, chilled vibe.

Just a great place to eat and drink. Right vibe, good service but equally low key. Visually pleasing, ambient setting without being pretentious. Expect to spend upwards of $100 for two people, with no regrets whatsoever.

What a gem! We had a lovely early dinner and wine here. The wait staff couldn't have been more attentive and knowledgeable. The Tapas were well priced, fresh and delicious. We took my 7 month old baby and they were so accommodating. Highly recommend.

A cute wine bar tucked in along Herschell street. Came here for a quick wine before dinner around the corner at Bistronomy. We arrived half an hour before closing, and it was really nice that the staff did not make us feel rushed, in fact when we left i asked what time they were due to close and I was told "soon". There were a few other tables still enjoying their drinks so it it was really nice to see a place stay open a little later for the guests that were still around. Even though we sat outside, the ambience was nice being on a quiet side street and the building is certainly unique. The wine menu was extensive with selections from Hawkes Bay and around the world.

I had been eyeing this place up. The menu looked fantastic and it certainly delivered. The South American beef and the Tuna were our favourites. The staff were very friendly, attentive, passionate and knowledgeable. The drinks were great, something a little different. The best thing was definitely how personable the staff were.

First time coming here and the waiter was extremely rude and seemed really annoyed at mine and my companions existence. Spoke down to me as if I was not good enough to even be there. Definitely won't go back. Food is over priced. Only good thing was the spicy mayo served with the fries platter.

Always enjoyed Matisse! Great staff here and selection of wines from all over the world. Their platter was beautifully presented and so yummy, great for 4 people. The tempura oyster mushroom was fun to try too. Will be back :) I miss the old cocktail selection though.

Dinner with friends over the Easter weekend. The menu is great, with something for everyone. Tapas style means you can share the deliciousness. The food looked so good I didnt even take pics! The dumplings were superb, the dipping sauce with the fries was amazing and had a good kick, I thought the seared tuna was a little overdone but it was delicious, the beef was tender and lovely, and the pork Katsu and slaw was also a taste sensation. An extensive wine list with local and imported selections, good ‘by the glass’ offerings, and not outrageously priced. The atmosphere is industrial chic, and lots of hubbub. Outside seating area is well lit but intimate. The location is great, central Napier, a short walk from the Art Deco Masonic Hotel. Would recommend for drinks and a nibble, dinner or anytime.

Yyyeeessss, a real gem in the Bay. I know we love our wine here so places to buy wine aren't scarce, but Matisse do it so well. Lovely platters too and a funky atmosphere. I love visiting and taking visitors too.

One of our best finds in Napier, unfortunately we found it on our last day, but will return on the first day of our next visit, great hospitality backed with great wine and food. Recommend the two meats and two cheese board option @$69 great value for money

Went in for a dinner on a Thursday night, the gentleman who served us was absolutely lovely, smile on his face and cracking jokes. Tappas menu was great with such bold flavors coming out. Only down fall was drinks being forgotten because they were either busy or understaffed I'm not sure. They were very apologetic about the situation and ensured we had a good time. Will definitely be coming back.

Only had one night in Napier and so glad we booked dinner at Matisse. The food was super tasty, creative and well booked. The wine menu was clearly impressive and service was friendly and really professional. Definitely recommend a visit. We had the pork belly, lamb ribs, Argentina beef, homemade focaccia and vegetables… yes we ordered alot and gobbled it all up 🙃

We are visiting from Melbourne and we love this place. We been there two nights in a row. Once for Dinner and the next day for after dinner drinks. Awesome venue. Great atmosphere. Yummy tapas style food - easy to share. Amazing huge wine list. Lovely friendly knowledgeable staff. The German and British bar tenders are awesome, serving some really Innovative cocktails. The music is great too. A must to check out. Napier should be very happy to have Matisse Wine Bar.

Highlight of dining experience at Matisse while staying in Napier. Nils (German) and the British waiter & waitress (pardon me that I cannot remember your names) are awesome. They make the whole dining experience to another levels. Great food, super delicious cocktails, welcoming ambience and very personal services. Exceptional and Sensational!
