Simply Magnificent! The first view will blow you away. This is the largest wood only structure in the world. Pictures cannot do justice to this UNESCO heritage site. You need to see for yourself the scale and splendour! While you are there, do check out the "nostril" of Buddha. It is said, if you can climb in and exit from the other end, you will be lucky. It is located in one of the main pillar at the rear of the inner hall. It is located just within the Nara Park where the bowing deers are. Highly Recommended to visit!

Absolutely incredible. The best structure and item I have seen in the whole of Japan. It has the world's largest Buddhist statue and the temple architecture is just incredible. Forget the deer, just come for this. I was shocked at the whole structure at how amazing it is.

One of the seven powerful Buddhists temple in Japan. Impressive and well maintained. The entry costs JPY 1000 ( Buddha hall + museum) as of Feb. 2024.

This was absolutely one of my favorite sites in all of Japan. We were fortunate to visit on a sunny Saturday which made the temple and the grounds a site to behold. The approach through Nara park is of course busy with deer and tourists but that is why everyone is there. The scale and the grandure of the temple absolutely do not come across in photos. I constantly cursed my camera for failing to capture what I was seeing with my own eyes. The moment you enter the temple and see the Daibutsu in-person is humbling and the chance to walk the interior of the temple offers a chance to see other amazing statues as well. One of my favorite parts of the visit was getting a hand written and and stamped certification of my visit in my journal - it's my most treasured souvenir. Admission was about ¥600 and we experienced no wait on a Saturday afternoon. Would absolutely recommend it to anyone and don't rush your visit.

I will write it on English. Pretty famous place on Nara city. You might want to visit when on Hanami or Momiji season. You can see the deers strolling around, buy special biscuits for them for 200 yen. If you want to see the big Buddha inside, have to pay first. From Kintetsu Nara station, just go straight and you can found the park easily.

This temple holds Japan's largest bronze Buddha. It was amazing to see the Buddha and the structure of the temple. If you are in Nara Park its worth to pay the entrance fee to see it. There are some shops inside the temple that sells charms and other stuff. There is a sign on the side of the main stone stairs that you are not allowed to sit there. Please be respectful of the temple when visiting.

This temple is an absolute must visit even if you've been here already. The biggest wooden building and bronze Buddha in the whole world are making Nara the Buddhism capital of the world. Amazing architecture and art. There are also little souvenir shops inside. The Buddha definitely stole everything else the show.

The temple is known for having the largest wooden building in the world. It also has one of Japan's greatest Buddha statues. It was originally built during the Nara period but has been rebuilt a few times later on due to various reasons. Buddhism has always been a huge part of culture and heritage in Japan, and this temple has been one of the most important centres for Buddhism in the country for centuries. Deer roam freely around the park as well, meant to be sacred messengers. This temple and the park is one of the best reasons to visit Nara when in the country.

This site is home to one of the most spectacular wooden structures on Earth. This Buddhist temple is elegantly designed and larger than any picture could ever display. Inside is where you can find the famous colossal Buddha. It is magnificent and a true sight to see!

One of the iconic and favourite must-visit spot for locals and tourists. Entrance fee is required to view the iconic Buddha statue and the temple history. The entrance hall is really huge and big, although it has been restructured to protect the original framework. Definitely worth to visit, also there's a beautiful garden in the front and side. Gets really crowded during day time.

One of the must visit placed in Japan! I always get goosebumps when I enter the Temple. This thing is just so gigantic that a picture can not express it! The buddha inside is impressive and very well maintained. They also have a lot of history explained inside the temple with s 1:50 model of the former temple area.

Beautiful temple complex. It was very crowded on a Saturday, even with the pandemic ongoing. I can imagine when there are international tourists that this place becomes quite overrun. I purchased tickets to ended at the museum near Nandaimon gate. You can buy a ticket to enter the museum and the Buddha, which means you won’t need to wait in line to buy at ticket at the entrance to the temple itself. Some of the features of the temple are closed due to COVID- for example the large hole in one of the pillars that you can normally crawl through it closed

Not only deer are in this city available. In the city, the park is worth visiting this beautiful temple. Could be many times a bit crowded but still it is a very nice experience. Around the main corridor is also a lot of stalls where to buy some local wood-made souvenirs. After that enjoy the feeding of the beauties of the city 🤩 Thank you ✌️

One of the powerful Seven Great Temples, located in Nara, the old capital of Japan. It marked the adoption of Buddhism as a state religion. It's one of the biggest temples in Japan which hosts and impressive Buddha inside. Be prepared for the amount of tourists and especially all of them buying lucky charms. There is no free entrance to the building so be prepared to pay.

As impressive as it is peaceful. You feel very small when you walk up to the main building, and even smaller standing in the incredible presence of the giant Buddha. It costs 600¥ to enter but I recommend spending the 1000¥ to get tickets to the museum first. Try to see the museum first (located outside the big gate). I didn’t, but it’s clear that is how the experience is intended to go.

One of the most majestic sites to visit in the Narra area. Upon entering the temple which requires an admission fee of 600 yen per person, you are able to walk around the temple and view the amazing sculptures shown in the images. Would highly suggest visiting

Very important Buddhist temple in the history of Japan from the 8th century C.E. up to the present, an imposing and huge wooden structure housing the world’s largest bronze image of the Buddha. Believers and tourists flock to this place for its sacred space, beauty and majesty, and historical significance. It is within the vast Nara park with its famous deer which like to be fed with special crackers. A must visit!

Having been here many times before, still love to visit here every time! It holds such historic significance and truly serene every time I come. Unfortunately, the column with the hole (Buddha’s nostril) had been cordoned off when I visited this time in Dec 2023 so no visitors could climb through.

I was dumbfounded by the size of the temple it is probably similar if not bigger than the forbidden palace in Beijing. Inside you will find one of the biggest Buddha in the world. Out of respect I didn’t film. When exiting you can find the dear coin deposit which is super cute.

Deer and their propensity to bow are cute. This park is large which means lots of walking and gazing at the cultural and religious aspects. If time is tight then don’t spend a lot of time with the deer at the entrance. They were very complacent and the deer are prevalent throughout the entire park….so many more opportunities to interact with them later and yes you should get a picture with them!

Gorgeous temple with huge statues inside. You can also enjoy the Nara deer before heading in. We happen to visit January 2nd, part of Japan's long new year celebration. It was crowded, but worth it to us.

Very majestic temple! Admission fee of 600 yen. Inside there are old statues, as well as a huge Buddha statue. Lots of deer around outside of the temple. Can be a bit crowded, but not too bad Would recommend going here for anyone interested in history, temples and old statues. Probably even prettier in better weather (went here on a rainy day)!

Visiting Todai-ji was a nice experience because of the big wooden temple and the part where people climb through a hole in a column of the temple, which is supposed to bring enlightenment and good luck. The area around it, with a peaceful park and a bell shrine, made the visit even better. It's a great place to see Japan's history and enjoy nature.

loved this place. It was just so nice and we were lucky snd went in winter so not many people are around. buying tickets on the day was good. I would suggest buying them at the ticket booth next to the gate. there is normally no line here and it's much easier to buy them. I would also suggest taking your time at the top there is some really cool statues at the top.

Very large beautiful temple with some large statues inside. The souvenir shop was large and better than most other places. There’s a massive beautiful torii gate on the way to the temple also with deer outside of it.

Be marveled by the amazing architecture and heritage of this world heritage site. Much to read and explore in the area. Recommend you catering 1-2 hours for a quick walk around. Can spend half a day walking the whole area and busk in the atmosphere of this amazing site.

The temple is inside Nara park, very nice and peaceful . When you walking to the main hall, you can see many deers and please be careful as they are a bit hungry. The park is very beautiful during autumn.

This is a very beautiful Buddhist temple located in Nara in a picturesque environment. We reached Nara from Osaka by train. Took a bus from the station, it's just 10minutes by bus. A short walk took us to the temple. There's also a museum in the same area. If I remember correctly, we got a combined ticket. The temple is huge and very attractive with a great architecture. There are a few idols of Lord Buddha including a very large one. It is nice to walk around. Museum was pretty interesting, couldn't spend much time as it was closing time. The park outside has many deer wandering around. They are cute and friendly.

What a truly magnificent temple! I was really amazed by how big and beautiful it is, specially the bronze buddha. Very impressive place that literally left me with no words to describe it. If you have the opportunity go visit and then you can understand how I felt about this amazing temple.

Very huge temple. Even the Buddha statues, including the Great Buddha, are oversized! There are many lovely deer around the temple. It is a little thrilling when you have sweets for deer, because many deer come close to you.

(Trip was made back then on 21 Nov 2019, before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit) Just a short walk from the Daibutsu-Ike Pond, is Todai-ji Temple, which used to hold the world record as the largest wooden building. It also houses one of Japan’s largest bronze statues of Buddha. You can’t help but be in awe and feel the presence of the sheer scale when standing next to the building.

I loved so much Todai-ji (東大寺) that I went two times: 1st time (29th of June Wednesday) I went early in the afternoon (3pm) and there were lots of tourists and school trips… 2nd time (18th of August Thursday) I went thirty minutes before closing (5pm) and it was wonderful! There was no one and it was really quiet. I was surprised by the size of the Statue. The garden is well maintained and clean. Visiting the temple you can understand the reason why it is the most famous landmark of Nara. The first time I came I got the おみくじ for 200¥. This was absolutely my first time. I think it is an interesting thing to try. N.B. If you want to try passing through the famous hole in a pillar (large as the Buddha’s nostril), I am sorry to tell you that is still close due to Corona Virus. I was a bit upset.

ご迷惑をおかけしますが、このレビューは英語で書かれています。 The temple is totally worth it! And though I can't say much that hasn't already been said, I will say this: Watch for dingleberries and suspicious wet spots on the sidewalks... don’t walk there... Be careful of the deer! They can get enthusiastic-borderline-aggressive if you have any food-like objects in your hand and/or make eye contact with them. If you just walk through without acknowledging their presence besides looking at them from a distance (I mean versus looking at the one right next to you) then you’ll be ok. The deer seem to only acknowledge you if you acknowledge them first.

One of the huge Buddhist temple I have ever visited. As I know, this temple might be well-known for becoming one of the biggest wooden building in the world. This building believed to be built during the Nara period in early 8 centuries. You can enjoy the big Buddha statues inside, with one being the biggest and the other two smaller, but with gold color. The entrance fee is 600 yen, but you will not regret to enter this temple.

  • 5/5 Tobias L. 9 months ago on Google
Strongly recommended to visit if you're anywhere in the area. The buddha is absolutely massive and so is the building containing it. One pillar has a whole whose width is supposedly the same as of the nosehole of the statue, children can pass through it. They also sell nice postcards here.

Nice temple but it was too crowded and very long queues to get into the temple for better view. Visited on 3rd Nov which was Cultural Day in Japan and probably that explains the crowd or not. Still a great place to visit with alot of history and worth the hike up

  • 5/5 Camilla A. 10 months ago on Google
This was my second time there and it amazed me the same way it did on my first visit! The temple is huge and very impressive! I went there around 4:40pm, so there weren’t many people anymore, so it was really nice! I could walk around peacefully and admire every single detail of it! Inside the temple area, there are a lot of souvenir shops that you can buy a lot of things, such as charms, amulets, etc.

Deer everywhere. On the road there are lovely signs "Slow down because deer often cross the road". They are quite gentle and often go around the campus

Visited this amazing temple with a wonderful view. The Buddha in the temple is beautiful and worth the adult ticket price of 600 yen. It is crowded even on a weekday but I guess that normal for a tourist spot.

  • 4/5 R 5 months ago on Google
600 yen for adults. 300 for children under 12. Group discounts available. Lots of souvenirs available at the exit including magnets, shirts, and post cards. Amazing temple, very much worth the visit. Text and descriptions available in English as well. Can be tricky to navigate with wheelchairs, so beware. Also caution that they’re very restrictive about group photos on the grounds. This applies mostly to bigger groups, not couples or small families.

The main attraction in Nara! The Todai-Ji temple is amazing. The great Buddha statue, called Daibutsu by the Japanese, is the largest bronze statue of Buddha in the world. Pictures do not do it justice - it is impressive in person, and by the way, it is larger than the monumental Buddha in Kamakura. What you may not realize is that there are several other giant statues - all very impressive - inside and outside the main hall. Simply amazing.

  • 5/5 Matt D. 4 months ago on Google
Photos don’t make this building justice, it looks so beautiful in real life. Also the big Buddha statue inside, just wow! Definitely buy an entry ticket to see it up close!

  • 3/5 Do K. 1 year ago on Google
Very beautiful, breathtaking temple. However they are not baby stroller friendly at all: if you are a wheelchair user, you have to contact them in order for the wheelchair access to be opened. If you are taking a stroller, you have to carry it all the way up and down, as you are not allowed to use the slope access. So either take your baby carrier or toddler walking, or be ready to carry your heavy stroller in your arms. Also, there’s no place to park it, so it’s 100% carrying it.
