Cape Coast Castle, perched on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean in Ghana, is a profoundly significant historical site. Its beautiful white-washed exterior belies a dark and complex history, as the castle served as one of the major departure points for millions of African people who were sold into slavery. Upon entering the castle, you are immediately immersed in the history of the Atlantic Slave Trade. The guided tours are exceptionally informative, shedding light on the inhumane conditions enslaved Africans were subjected to before being transported across the sea. Each room, from the holding dungeons to the "Door of No Return," narrates a different chapter of this chilling past, and the guides effectively capture the gravity and poignancy of these stories. The castle also houses a museum that provides additional context and insights into the era of the slave trade. Exhibits include historical artifacts, maps, and poignant illustrations, making it an essential stop for visitors seeking to deepen their understanding of this historical period. Despite its grim history, Cape Coast Castle offers an unexpectedly uplifting aspect: the panoramic view of the ocean and the town of Cape Coast from the castle's top. This sight serves as a stark contrast to the castle's haunting interior, adding a layer of profound beauty to the visit. In summary, a visit to Cape Coast Castle is both a sobering and enlightening experience. The castle stands as a powerful symbol of a tragic period in human history and serves as an essential reminder of the resilience of the human spirit. It's a deeply impactful destination that offers valuable lessons about the past and challenges us to reflect on our collective responsibility towards a more equitable future. For anyone seeking to understand Ghana's - and indeed the world's - history more deeply, Cape Coast Castle is a must-visit.

I think everyone should visit the slave castles regardless of what the rating on Google Maps is. This is a historic landmark and part of Ghana's tragic history that must never be forgotten. My 2 star rating is for the people and organization that manages the castle. This is a sacred place for a lot of people local and abroad, and yet even before you enter you are harassed by vendors trying to sell things to you, and people trying to extort money from you. This is not acceptable! Fortunately, I thought the guided tour was excellent and our tour guide really captured the spirit and feeling of the tragic experiences in the castle. Unfortunately, the information provided in the waiting area did not do a good job of complimenting his good works. The information is only about the the architecture of the building and no story about the history. There is no digital media, it's all printed and chipping away. Please do better. As a museum and a globally recognized historical site, the Castle experience desperately needs to always be updated and new findings catalogued and added.

Definitely a site worth visiting…the tour guide was exceptionally wonderful. You get emotional at some point pondering over the effects of slave trade and it’s impact. I really enjoyed being exposed to black history and the significance of forgiveness. A lot of emotions….💔

Loved the experience! The stories! It humbled me. And it was nice being asked questions by my little ones. They have maintained the authenticity of the castle. You need to visit some time

It is really important to visit at least one of the castles along this coast (the other is Elmina) to learn a bit about the history of the transatlantic slave trade in a place where slaves were actually kept, tortured, killed and sold. Our guide Justice was very knowledgeable and patiently talked through the history and significance if each room/section if the castle.

If you have a choice of guides, request Tony. Tony was an AMAZING GUIDE! Tony guided us through the castle with so much knowledge. His ability to connect with us and answer our questions were beyond expectation. He was really present during our tour, no distractions. You can tell that Tony, himself, has a passion for the information he is giving to others. I would recommend Cape Coast to anyone. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND Tony!

Definitely a phenomenal experience. A must do for any lineage of the diaspora. It's more of a healing experience than a sad one. The guide was very sensitive to the presence of African Americans and was very insightful with alot of history unbeknownst to many of us in our group. There was an opportunity to honor our ancestry, have a full blessing and prayer. I'm addition to walking through the door of return. I understand they will soon be changing the name to reflect the atrocities that occurred throughout history. Look forward to amazing shopping, fishing culture by the community, and an overall grand experience. Don't worry the prices at the shops are quite reasonable, even compared to other shopping areas.

This spot got a lot of people really teary, going through the very poetic rendition of the tales and stories surrounding the existence of the dungeon (as the tour guide would prefer to call it). The tour guides should really be protected as they are custodians of our collective history. Encouraged one to document in book form. Quite an experience indeed

The line of this coastline is beautiful. A continuum of palm trees, harbours, outstanding beaches and a rough sea. Everywhere you look there are hawkers offering the unimaginable: from toiletries to sliced bread spiced with exhaust fumes. The castle and environment of stark contrasts, the castle also had some extravagant chambers, devoid of the stench and squalor of the dungeons, just a couple of metres below.

Door of No Return. Hmmm historically with storytelling it goes with a heavy heart, pain, and flashbacks always. The strength of an African but there could be a better approach but it's all part of the journey of life. We forgive each other and move.

Emotional and a very tough experience for me but the closet I've ever gotten to the raw truth surrounding my ancestors/history! Going through the Door of no return was so liberating.....a sense of freedom in my soul that nobody can ever take from me! My life will never be the same! Inspired! Enlightened! Liberated! Hold no hate in my heart but rather a greater desire to draw nearer to Christ because He's our only hope . ....to stand for what's right leaving vegenance to the Lord for all who have done evil will face judgement! To love others like Christ loves us is my purpose in this world! I stand free in Christ!

The history here must never repeat itself. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and lasted about an hour. I’m so happy we traveled here to see this castle in person. You can feel the heaviness of the past. Good experience for my children.

An amazing place to visit. It is one of two castles in Cape Coast. The Cape Coast Castle is the smaller of both. The tour was very informative. Viewing the male and female sections where slaves were kept before being sent off coast of Africa was very sad to see. The history of the Castle is told in a museum section that was displayed well.

Cape Coast castle is the biggest slavery castle in Ghana. It has been built as a tourist destination 100 years after the abolition of trans-Atlantic slave trade in order to teach Black Community it’s history and also, most importantly for everyone, every race to understand how bad slavery was and still is. We need to promote love among us, because that’s the only way we can avoid the bad in the world.

The guided tour of this landmark was wonderful. Once you pay the entrance, you will be directed to a tour guide who will show you around the castle and explain the inhuman conditions in which humans were kept as slaves before being sold and "shipped off" to the Americas.

Site of historical importance that showed where the slaves were held prior to being placed on ships to be sold as cargo. It was a dark and awful feeling place and a reminder that the slave trade lasted for 400 years and still colors the landscape and lives of many, many people around the world.

Cape Coast Castle (Swedish: Carolusborg) is one of about forty "slave castles", or large commercial forts, built on the Gold Coast of West Africa (now Ghana) by European traders. It was originally a Portuguese "feitoria" or trading post, established in 1555. However, in 1653 the Swedish Africa Company constructed a timber fort there. It originally was a centre for the trade in timber and gold. It was later used in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.[1] Other Ghanaian slave castles include Elmina Castle and Fort Christiansborg. They were used to hold slaves before they were loaded onto ships and sold in the Americas, especially the Caribbean. This "gate of no return" was the last stop before crossing the Atlantic Ocean.[2]

One of the reasons we came to this part of the country; the Cape Coast Castle. It may be good or bad, positive or negative, but when you are at a new country, it’s indispensable, at least for me, to get to know its history, and Ghana has an important history site just there. In this case, not so good because of the human barbarism, the terrible things that has happened over the years, and when you are told in detail all those kind of things, and you try to imagine, cause it is the only thing you can do, you get really impressed. The Cape Coast Castle is a history site that everyone in this world should know, but not just a history site for Ghana but for the entire planet. The more we know about our past, the farthest we’ll be to repeat history. And a final point, as our guide asked us, “has things really changed?” I have my own opinion, I’ll let you go to the Cape Coast Castle and answer that question too.

Definitely a must when visiting Cape Coast. The castle itself is a beautiful building with some dark history. We did a guided tour and even thought there were lots of people during Sunday morning, all the groups were organized. The guide himself was great and was able to pass a lot of information about the history and purpose of the castle. The guide is lead through the whole castle from the slave dungeons through the living quarters to the final "door of no return." It was very powerful experience with some lovely views to the ocean and also Cape Coast boat builders.

The castle is great. Inside, the tour, if you are unfamiliar with the history of the slave trade, there may be some details hard to comprehend. There are souvenir shops, restroom (washroom) and places to get water, juice etc. Major minus point, all "vendors" outside waiting for you, crowding you especially if you actually wanna buy something, we had a big crowd gathered trying to sell us more just because we bought water and one painting. It gets too much, almost dangerous as they kept opening the door of our vehicle. Definitely affected the overall experience.

If you come to Ghana, this is a part of world history you must experience. In many ways it’s hard to conceive that something this atrocious happened, but it did and we must fully steep ourselves in it to learn, recover and do better. I read so many reviews of the aggressive vendors out front but we didn’t have that experience at all. However if you lingered too long I’m sure you would be descended on like hawks. Our tour was thorough and informative and worth the hour or so we spent in the heat touring the castle. Bring it but water, any time of day is likely to be hot. There is easy parking and I recommend either going early at opening or later just before closing to avoid the heat of the day. We thought we would find lunch in town but it just all felt so overwhelming we just came back to Lemon Beach resort (which is a great place to stay and eat). *** In everlasting memory of the anguish of our ancestors may those who died rest in peace may those who return find their roots may humanity never again perpetrate such injustice against humanity. We, the living, vow to uphold this. ***

This is a site that I believe every American needs to visit. It was incredibly heartbreaking to hear the history, but if this history isn't taught, it's bound to be repeated. I highly recommend visiting this site. Also, PLEASE be RESPECTFUL/ MINDFUL of the culture, here, and the other castles. If you are a woman, please dress respectfully. Wear shorts or a dress that goes down to, at the very least, the knees.

Cape Coast Castle is one of those things you need to do when you come to Ghana. The tour of this slave fort is very honest and even handed. It's not about blame, but an acknowledgement of what happened in the past and a commitment to keep it from happening again. Whatever you think you know, you will understand more deeply than ever before. This was my 3rd time taking the tour, and there's always something new to learn. Tours are every hour on the hour.

The cape coast castle throws more light on the slave trade that happened over 400 years, specifically on how slaves were treated before being transported to the west l, they are more of sad and deep memories. It’s very important to visit the Cape coast castle ad there is a great deal of history to be learned over there. The place will however need some more maintenance.

The 5 star rating is not because the fort is in perfect condition or there's a great gift shop (it isn't and there's not) The rating is earned because of the history and importance of what went on here. This is a must see for everyone interested learning more about the sordid thing we call the slave trade. Conditions here while awaiting transportation are almost unbelievable. Only through visiting and understanding places like this do we avoid commiting these mistakes again and again. Morgan did a great job as guide.

Really interesting place to visit and learn about the past horrors and how they should never be repeated. The only thing I would say is a slight negative is that certain aspects of history were glossed over or not mentioned, such as the fact that African leaders bought and sold these poor people way before Ghana was colonialised, it just seems odd not to tell the whole story if we all need to be accountable. Also, the amount of people begging outside the Door of No Return detracts from what is an emotional point of the tour and there are a lot of people outside the gates trying to sell things. On the whole though, a very sobering place and unbelievably beautiful.

This is the most visited historical place in Africa it has everything you need to know about slavery. No wonder is called World Slave dungeon,i can feel my ancesters whenever i visited this place.President Obama cried when he saw The Gate Of No return?? You need to feel the spirit there as an African.

Cape Coast Castle is one of the three castles located in Ghana. As one of the major tourist site in Ghana ??, many people both old and young, citizens and foreigners, etc. go there to know the history of the place. This place some sad memories of our Ghanaian citizens being the slave trade.

Cape Coast Castle is a historical site that houses museums that sell african artefacts. If you visit on a good day... you would find local drummers playing some traditional music to welcome and escort you into the courtyard. The tour guides are very hospitable and know how to tell stories of slave trade to make one cry.

Life changing. So much could be said. But to know I came from those that went through hell and still lived, gives me great hope and strength for the future. The tour really challenges your emotions on all level depending on the perspective you are viewing it from very informative and teaches a lot of things I Never heard about the slave trade. Horrible Horrible Horrible people who participated in such an inhumane endeavor. But God redeems and there have been and always will be better days.

Place has great history. Tour guide was exceptionally good, just that I don't recall his name. Despite the fact that they want to maintain ancient look and feel of the castle, I think the place needs serious patch up to keep the building standing for decades to come.

  • 4/5 Kofi Frimpong S. 2 years ago on Google
The place is indeed historic and I advice everyone to visit the place once in their lifetime. The tour guide was really good and did justice in inciting emotions. As someone who already knew a bit about the history I think the story told by the tour guide was not objective enough and downplayed the contributions of africans in the trans-atlantic slave trade. I feel a historic place should approach history scientifically and objectively which the tour guide failed to do for me on an intellectual level, hence the 4 stars

  • 4/5 Sophia S. 1 year ago on Google
My major problem with this place is the cost for non-Ghanaians but I like their business sense. There’s not much to see but the tour is interesting because of the stories I enjoyed leaving the place more than I enjoyed going in especially because of the street vendors outside, they sell a lot of interesting things

  • 3/5 Ludovic L. 10 months ago on Google
Took the tour for $50 cedis (obroni price). The tour guide relayed a lot of information about the castle and how it was used to facilitate enslaved people. The castle is in a decrepit state and needs a lot of repairs, painting, and road signage. It also has a lot of mold, so it might be wise to wear a mask. I just toured the lower levels or dungeons where people were stored since we were running short on time and also had not eaten lunch during the drive from Accra. The lower levels are the most important anyway and the reason why we came. With the electric lights turned off to show how they were in olden times, the dungeons were either pitch black or had very little natural light. The dungeons were also relatively small. It's difficult to comprehend how people stuffed into the dungeons for weeks and months survived with little food, unable to wash, steeped in urine, feces, and vomit. Only then to be further squeezed on a slave ship in perhaps worse conditions. I recommend that part of the tour include putting tourists in chains and locking them in the dungeons for 10 minutes in the same manner as captives were to impress upon people what happened here. Some of the dungeons had offerings which added to the poignancy. This castle had less hawkers than Elimina Castle, so it was nice being able to walk around the castle without being hassled as much for money and to buy something.

  • 5/5 paa s. 1 year ago on Google
Maintenance culture in Ghana is usually bad, but the managers of this facility is awesome. I was really impressed at how well they've kept the place. Only problem was with the tour guides; they speak with so much resentment on Christianity, they actually takes shots at you for being a Christian... lol

  • 5/5 Cassandra A. 9 months ago on Google

A sobering visit even though it was my fourth time. An education everyone needs to have in the largest holocaust in history. The tour guide wasn’t entirely engaging but the message resounded all the same.

You will get to see the full evil of the Colonizers here. be prepared to come learn, get sad, and very angry. No Latinos, Asians, Caucasians never had to endure this Bishop that was enforced on thw people of color just because of the a skin tone.. Everybody wants to be identified by a color when color means absolutely nothing. Collectively there are more brown cultures but hey travel the world and see it for yourself..
