Visited
Nalanda
University
earlier
this
month
during
the
C20
conference.
It
was
built
during
the
Gupta
period
and
operated
from
427
CE
until
1197
CE;
and
had
a
10km
long
campus.
It
was
one
of
the
earliest
Universities
of
the
world
which
taught
not
just
different
schools
of
Buddhist
philosophies
but
also
metaphysics,
logic,
maths,
grammar,
astronomy
and
medicine.
The
Nalanda
library
housed
over
nine
million
books
and
attracted
10,000
students
from
around
the
world.
There
is
documented
evidence
that
students
from
Korea,
Japan,
China,
Tibet,
Indonesia,
Persia
and
Turkey
used
to
live
and
study
in
Nalanda
University.
Eventually
Muslim
invader
Mohammad
Bakhtiyar
Khilji,
destroyed
the
University
by
burning
it
down.
They
say
there
were
so
many
books
in
the
library
that
it
burnt
for
three
months.
The
visit
here
brought
upon
a
sense
of
disappointment
and
sadness
to
see
the
state
it
is
in,
but
eventually
smiling
because
I
am
glad
that
I
belong
to
a
civilisation
which
has
such
a
big
legacy
of
academic
excellence.
Even
more
happy
that
I
ended
up
visiting
and
taking
inspiration
and
motivation
from
it.
And
happiness
just
doubles
given
that
I
am
a
teacher
myself
and
was
honoured
to
trace
up
my
roots
to
Nalanda
