My experience at the Matanga hill was quite dangerous. I came to Hampi on 15/11/2021 with my family. The next day in the early morning at 5:00am I left from Sandhya guest house(near Virupaksha temple) towards Matanga hills (through Bazaar street). 1)SAFE AND EASY ROUTE: Follow the straight route from Virupaksha Temple towards hills that are opposite to the temple and visible( it's called Bazaar street) for 1km, then steps are visible through an embankment follow them(DONT TURN RIGHT NEAR THE DEAD END).... now after 200m you can see the Achutraya temple ruins, the pathway bends itself to the right and takes you to the hill top... It's easy and safer route(10 mins hardly). 2) Cave route: I GOT TRAPPED I was alone and took right near the dead end of bazar street from the hill front and followed it as it was written by someone saying "way to hill". I just had my phone as torch and Google Map was ON. I went through the cave opening(@5:30am) and got lost. Imagine if there was a heavy rain( cause there was minute opening on to top), if bats were there, or what if a bear or any other wild animal was hiding. It was impossible to go ahead after 200m in the cave. Then I took the return route, but there were many passages to my left, which confused me, and I was damn horrified in the dark (I just wanted to return). Was locked there for 20 damn minutes, then with the help of compass in my phone visualised for a minute and prayed God, and just got off through a passage which was small and covered with bushes. Please don't try this route alone in the early morning (AFTER ENTERING THE CAVE---TAKE LEFT AND KEEP SRRAIGHT, NOT THE RIGHT). i was a lot happy witnessing the sun shine on my face. Enjoyed the bird view of Hampi. It's worth visiting this place.

This is a must visit place in Hampi. Doesn't matter you go for a sunrise or a sunset. But views are breathtaking. Unfortunately during our visit it was very cold and foggy so we couldn't watch the sunrise. But after few hours the sun was already up by 9am. We visited at 5:30 the starting point for trek and reached about 30 min on the top of the hill. Note: whenever you are travelling here make sure you have footwear with nice grips as you have to climb and get down on slippery rocks. Dont bring anything to eat or avoid bags as there are lots of monkey who seems to be nowhere but come our suddenly you open a bag or anything to eat. Best view is at the top of the hill and on the roof top of the temple. You can have 360 degree view of hampi. You can see the market, virupaksh temple, tungabhadra river, achutaraya temple etc. Also we wanted to visit for sunset but it rained that day so the plan got flopped again. All the bes to you but. I have seen picture from other people and they are marvelous.

This is the highest point in Hampi. The views are just mesmerizing and the trek up the hill is very thrilling and adventurous. You also get to see the panoramic view of Virupaksha temple, Tungabadhra river and other monuments from here. Make sure you go here by 5 pm so that you reach by sunset.

It's a delightful experience trekking uphill Matanga Hill, hailed as the highest peak in all of Hampi, it will give a birds 🐦 eye view of Hampi. From Virupaksha -- hampi bazaar -- monolithic bull statue -- anjanadri -- vittala temple -- achutha devaraya temple to the lotus Mahal etcetera places. There is a Narashimha swamy temple at the apex of the hill. Being known for sunrise and sunset, it's suggested if anyone is visiting hampi for the first time, better start off the first day trekking this hill to get an idea💡 of all the places to visit in hampi. Suggested timing 5:30 AM, one cannot miss the sunrise 🌄. There is one other sunrise point (Malyawanta Paravata) but trust me this just unbeatable w.r.t to that.

The view is simply breathtaking... To reach the top one needs to trek for half an hour. The trek is simple throughout except near the top. From the top, the whole Hampi can be seen. Try to visit during sunset for the best view. Parking is available for the spot.

In the name of matang rishi, who cursed Bali.. Great to burn calories, even you can start your trip from here and end to vitthala temple. Great view of hampi from hill top, and the meanders of tungbhdra river.

It is totally worth climbing this hill. We climbed it in 30 mins, it is not very high but the climb might be scary to few people. There are two paths to climb this hill; one path is from the hanuman temple and one path is from the back side. There is also a small river in the back side of the hill and it is worth taking a dip there too. You can get a very good view of Achyutaraya temple and Virupaksha temple from there.

This is very next to Main temple in Hampi. You can climb with a moderate trek but people above 40’s little difficult for them as there is no proper path or way to climb. There is also a small temple on top of this hill. Sunrise and view from peak is mesmerising. If you’re really meditating person, I think you’re going to have very great time.

Two places were good to see sun rise and sun set. One is Matanga hill - have to a steady trek to reach there. The view is awesome from here. The second one is the small hill right to Virupaksha Temple which is also good but crowded most of the time.

I have visited this point twice and it is totally worth climbing. The view is amazing. Sunrise and sunset both looks beautiful from the top of the hill. It is easy to reach on the top of the hill, not difficult at all. You can see the main Virupaksha Temple from the top. You can see almost all of Hampi from the top. It is so peaceful that you can just sit there for hours and enjoy the view.

There is something about this place.. after trekking high up the hill you are greeted with 360 degree birds eye view of Hampi. This is the best point for sunrise and sunset. One must get the thrill of hiking this hill if in Hampi..

At a distance of 1 km from Hampi Bus Stand, Matanga Hill is located at the eastern end of the Hampi Bazaar. It offers a breathtaking view of the ruined city and the beautiful landscape below. Matanga Hill is one of the major places to visit in Hampi. Being the highest point in Hampi; this is the best spot to get an aerial view of Hampi and its surroundings. There is a small temple on the top of Matanga Hill. On the way down there is a small cave marked where it is believed that Sugriva, ruler of Kishkinda, used to hide. According to mythology, Matanga Hill is one of the holy places described in the epic Ramayana as the base of Saint Matanga. It is also the place where Sugriva benefited from the magical protection of the sage Matanga who had placed a curse of death on Vali, if he dared enter the area of Matanga Hill. Being the highest peak in Hampi, the hill is a trekker's delight and offers pleasing views of the entire town below. There are many trekking paths that lead to the top of the hilltop where the Veerabhadra Temple is located. The climbing can take around 30 minutes. The roof top of the Veerabhadra Temple is the ideal place for sunrise and sunset view. From the top of the hill, one can view the Achyutaraya Temple, Tungabhadra River, Virupaksha Temple, Hampi Bazar and surroundings. One major thing to be noted about the Matanga Hill is the stepped ramp at the western side. Most popular track passing at the base of the hill is the track between Hampi Bazaar and Achyutaraya Temple. There are many trials that lead to the bottom of the foothill. The most prominent of it is that which leads to the east which closes at the Kadalekalu Ganesha temple. The next popular trail is to the east end of Hampi Bazaar Street.

Perfect hill top to spend a beautiful sunset after a day out wandering in the ruins. It's like cherry on top after exploring the lost heritage of Hampi.

Awesome place to get a bird eye view of hampi and enjoy sunrise and sunset, one of the must visit place in hampi !! Enjoyed the hike accompanied by solo traveller like me, we met day before visiting this place and decided to visit matanga hill together at early morning for sunrise. We started climbing the hill at 5:50 AM, there were other few 8-10 tourists. Just a 10-15 mins of hike, you would reach top. At the top we 2 met with another solo traveller 'Coco' from Chile, that was wonderful time we had , shared and talked about many things. While coming down foriener talked about entering a cave and got back to regular way while climbing and then we decided to enter the cave and explore little bit. Guess what, it was so thrilling inside the cave, we walked around 10 mins and found light passage which brought us towards "Achuta raya temple" Earlier we were going down in another direction towards "Nandi" where we started climbing the hill. It was a amazing experience to explore unknown cave with strangers. Finally got down at achutaraya temple's west side entrance which was completely opposite direction from starting point.
