The Black Star Gate is part of the Independence Square now known as the Black Star Square in Accra. The Black Star Square consists of the Independence Arch, the Black Star Gate and the Liberation Day Monument. The Black Star Gate is a monument topped by the Black Star of Africa. It's fun to visit this tourist site. It costs nothing to visit this tourist site however horse riding is available at a fee. The Black Star Gate was commissioned by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah on 1st July, 1961.

Independence Arch in Accra stands as a monumental testament to Ghana's journey towards freedom and its attainment of independence. Located prominently within the Independence Square, this arch is a powerful symbol of Ghana's liberation from colonial rule and a tribute to its founding father, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. The arch itself is an architectural marvel, adorned with detailed carvings and symbols that encapsulate themes of patriotism, unity, and national pride. Its imposing stature within the Independence Square adds to the gravitas of the site and offers visitors a visual treat that speaks volumes of Ghana's historical journey. While exploring Independence Square, it's essential for visitors to recognize the individual significance of its components. Notably, the Independence Arch should not be mistaken for the nearby Black Star Square. Although in close proximity and part of the broader complex, each has its unique history and symbolism. In summary, the Independence Arch, as a central feature of the Independence Square, is an embodiment of Ghana's spirit, resilience, and pride. A visit to Accra would be incomplete without experiencing this emblematic site. And while immersed in its history, it's crucial to appreciate its distinct role within the larger Independence Square and not conflate it with the neighboring Black Star Square.

A tour here took less than 30 minutes altogether. There was a historian there who gave a brief history and my questions seemed to be too much😃 There is no entrance fee so you can basically donate about 10-20 cedis depending on how generous you're feeling. There are vantage points for taking good pictures if you climb all the way up. The monument itself isn't well maintained though. Hoping that will change really soon.

For a European or American, the types of coffins they create here are, well.....different. If one made their living selling cell phones and enjoyed it, he or she might be buried in a giant cell phone. If one was a fisherman, he might be buried in a giant fish. It's pretty amazing what these guys can build, Wow! All by hand and elbow grease, they're made to last a long time. But you'll never know. Just love this place called Ghana.

Sometimes, it's possible to go to the top (for a small donation) where you have a very nice view of Black Star Square (you can see all the way to Osu Castle and the lighthouse)

We got a very nice and warm welcome. Although the place is not officially open yet as a result of the pandemic yet we were able to get into the beautiful atmosphere and saw the flowers and water fountain. It's a nice place to be really. When it's officially open we go for a proper visit .

The Black Star Gate is part of the Independence Square now known as the Black Star Square in Accra. It is located at the center of the Square where parades are held. The Black Star Gate is a monument topped by the Black Star of Africa. The five-pointed star represents Africa in general and particularly Ghana itself. It has the inscription “AD 1957” and “Freedom and Justice”. The Black Star Gate was commissioned by Kwame Nkrumah to indicate the country's supreme power to control its own affairs. This place represnts the heritage and soul of our dear nation Ghana.

Very great location to visit several sites in a general area. The beach area is close walk as well as Independence Square, an outdoor arena. Old Osu Castle is another destination close by. It's the old official home for the President.

Easy place to find because it's right by the roadside. Coffins available at very affordable prices. Parking available but it is not paved or tarred. No washroom available, and no disability parking or entrance either.

Wow wow wow!!! My recent trip to Ghana was nothing short of amazing, and a significant highlight of my journey was the visit to Independence Square in Accra. This iconic landmark is a true symbol of Ghana's rich history and its path to independence. The sheer grandeur of Independence Square is awe-inspiring. The colossal arch, the Black Star Monument, and the surrounding gardens create a picturesque setting that's both historic and serene. The architecture is a perfect blend of modernity and Ghana's cultural heritage. What truly made my visit exceptional was the historical significance of this place. Standing in the very spot where Ghana declared its independence from colonial rule in 1957 was a profound experience. The palpable sense of pride and freedom that lingers in the air is something every visitor should witness. Although I didn’t get the opportunity to visit during a local event, seeing a few Ghanaians and tourists gather here for diff other celebrations was heartwarming. It felt like a vibrant hub of national pride and unity. The Square is impeccably maintained, and the grounds are perfect for a leisurely stroll, picnics, or just taking in the views. It's a fantastic spot for both history enthusiasts and anyone seeking a peaceful escape in the heart of the bustling city. Additionally, the nearby Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, dedicated to Ghana's first president, offers further insights into the country's history and struggle for independence. I can't recommend a visit to Independence Square enough. It's not just a tourist attraction; it's a testament to the strength and resilience of the Ghanaian people. Whether you're a history buff, a nature lover, or simply someone looking for a profound cultural experience, Independence Square has something for everyone. A must-visit when in Accra! Also I got to take professional images for 5 Cedis too. The site was also free but you are asked to pay a token for maintenance. It’s not compulsory 💚

Great history, but the monument itself is not very special.. just some blocks of stones. They really could have done better to celebrate the country and its rich culture and not just build a bad copy of Western monuments..
