Over 80% of Ghana's imports and exports go through this immense port. It is one of the busiest in Africa and is therfore always on the move. Going through random car checks when entering and making payment for parking spaces is normal. If you are lost always remember to ask the officials in the vests or special lacostes or you may end up lost and face to face with one of the huge trucks or machines for loading and off loading cargo. That is not a good experience. It is a great place to also bring kids on excursion to learn more about the shipping industry.

This is the largest port in Ghana and mostly busy during working days. Due to the paperless system work at the Harbour is now being done efficiently but the only problem is the time you waste there when trying to clear your goods imported to the country. Sometimes the custom officers try to frustrate the the importers by taking some of the goods imported by the business men and women. One thing that also beat my mind is the agents there who are not working under the Harbour authority try to assist importers and charges them exorbitant fees and in some cases bolts with their hard earned monies....

The construction of the harbour was proposed by British Colonial Officers in theย Gold Coastย before its independence. An old fishing village called Torman was the proposed site for the harbour's construction.ย The rapid industrialization that followed Ghana's independence led to the town adopting the name Tema from that of theย fishing village. After independence, under the leadership of Ghana's first presidentย Kwame Nkrumah, the construction of the harbour began in the 1950s with planning led by the award-winning city planner and the first Ghanaian architect,ย Theodore S. Clerk.and was commissioned in 1962. As part of a visit of the Prime Minister ofย Barbadosย to Ghana in November 2019, a sister-port agreement was signed between Port Tema and theย Bridgetown Portย located in the Caribbean.

This is one of the old settlement and an industrial estate that was built by our first President of GHANA with the intention of creating a community for the worker of the Harbour so that they don't have to come from far place before attending to work. So tema township was created and I can tell you that it has helped a lot settlers there, they now have old and new with new expansion at tema.making them more organised, this place have a lot of good Hotels that serving tourists and visitors from far and near, with good schools too indeed it's a community on it's own. Anytime you are in town and want a place to have fun and also buy a land or a house I will recommend Tema to you all.

When you need affordable and fresh fish then go to Tema harbour. But don't go there if you don't like unpleasant smell . But you must also be careful of people too over there .

This is Ghana sea port. So we went on a scientific cruise using a tug boat during the COESSING summer school. To be honest, this was my worst cruise as I was sea sick, although I have been in other cruises.

I can recall clearly being on a ship anchored outside the surf line off Accra loading bags of cocoa beans. These were carried out to the ship in surfboats which were loaded on the beach by very fit locals who paddled the boats through the pretty big surf. This was in 1951 and I don't believe that Tema had been developed yet. The main port in what was then Gold Coast was Takoradi.
