I’ve been to several zoos and I would have to say this would have to be on the low end. We drove 2.5 hours to see a few animals and a lot of closed exhibits. First of all, every single restroom we went to was filthy. The floors were covered in mud, the toilets were deplorable and only one soap dispenser had soap in it. It’s like they haven’t been cleaned in months. Also - all of the hand sanitizer stations around the park were completely empty. We tried every single one that we saw, which was more than fifteen. My grandma had trouble renting a motorized cart. We stood there for about fifteen minutes before she was able to sit and ride away on one. They were having technical difficulties with their computers. Which the lady did apologize for. The aviary was closed due to the bird flu - which I don’t recall seeing any sort of signage before purchasing our tickets. Also, NO ELEPHANTS. The walk around the park isn’t bad and not hard to walk through. No big hills or bumpy walkways. So that’s a plus for us. Overall we will not be visiting again. Especially for the price and what you get with that price… we were all truly let down.

Love the Detroit Zoo....Always a nice time 😊. The Dinosaurs were up, which my son and I love!, and the penguin enclosure was nice and clean...the water was so clear. It was good to see the animals are being well taken care of. The Zoo itself was also clean and well maintained. We also took the train ride, which was nice, and saw a 4D movie which was awesome. I had never been to a 4 D movie...... definitely a fun experience 😃. Overall, no complaints about this visit. We had a nice time.

It was only a 35 min drive from my place in Canada, so there was convenience. Parking was great and organized. Pay when you get tickets. I don’t know if we missed some, but it only took about an hour to walk through and we stopped and Waited for hot chocolate at one of the stores. The areas were clean and the ground was even and easy to walk through. The difference between our local lights and this, their displays were huge and had so many fun animals. So many children were there just loving the atmosphere. It’s rather expensive in my opinion. Parking and 2 tickets cost $81 Canadian, our local lights are free, and has local vendors selling their products and food trucks and it seems to cover a similar amount of ground, the displays are just a bit smaller at home

My husband and I visited the zoo today and we loved it! We lucked out with perfect weather so we saw 90% of the animals there. It’s a beautiful place, and we were happy to see big, enriching enclosures for animals. Lots of friendly staff and volunteers. Took us about 4 hours to make our way through everything. Highly recommend!

Our family has traveled all over the US, visiting different zoos, and Detroit is often cited as a favorite. I'm so glad, because this zoo was part of my childhood. The layout is fantastic, the living conditions for the kids seem very well-maintained. Visited most recently for Wild Lights and hands down: this is the best holiday lights show I've been to. Yes, it was a little cold but dress warmly and have money ready for the kiosks of hot chocolate and pretzels. But the imaging was just wonderful. I'd do this again next year in a hot minute. BTW: the Zoo pretzels were to DIE FOR. I don't even LIKE pretzels and I was ready to knife my sisters! Buddy's Pizza was amazing and Detroit Mini-Donuts had their truck open....delicious! Support Detroit!!!!

Great family destination! Great for all ages! There are tons of awesome exhibits. We were excited to see the polar bears but unfortunately the entire exhibit was empty. There are tons of food options (also vegetarian options) they allow coolers too! The staff was very kind & helpful answering questions. There are multiple gift shops & tons of fun things like face paintings & silly drawings for kids.

Go say hello to Max the Macaw in the bird house! He loved our interaction and blinked back in reply while scooting closer on a branch. Quiet and shy, but acknowledged me with curiosity. During the daytime it’s empty right now during the winter, highly recommend. The animals were all active around 10 am feeding time.

What an absolutely amazing place for long walks and sightseeing. All the variety and nature wonders and exotic animals to see. Except for the beaver 🦫. I have never seen the beaver. It’s supposed to be there, but never been seen. One time i saw a couple of visitors passing by and one way saying to another: “I don’t think there is a beaver in there. They just have a sign 🪧 but no beaver in there” 😂 Hopefully one day I’ll get to see that shy one in there. Zoo is well taken care of , very clean , spacious, animals are well treated and look healthy and nicely taken care of. It’s not an easy work. But staff is doing a really great job. This is a historic place and I’m happy to be a member and enjoy it as often as possible. Highly recommend to get a membership as it’s totally worth it! And hopefully I’ll get to see that beaver one day 😊

This was one of my favorite places as a kid, and remains my favorite as an adult. The exhibits are vast and kid-viewing friendly. There is so much to do. The penguins are always a joy. The current art exhibit they have in education center is beautiful. The dinosaur walk they have for the summer was a nice stroll and the kids loved that a lot. So much fun. Everyone needs to go here at least once.

Was a really good experience. The lights were great had a good variety. The only complaint I would have would be they had VIP areas I guess they were called, with heaters and drinking areas, that had nobody in them. But we could not use them not even to go walk underneath a patio heater to warm up for a few minutes was kind of ignorant being that it was like 20° outside and there was nobody in these spaces except for the people GUARDING them. I HOPE IT PAID OFF FOR THEM BEING AS IT LOOKED LIKE NOBODY HAD PURCHASED VIP TICKETS. There was other people mumbling about it but all in all it was a good trip to see the lights.

It's fine. You can do the majority in 2hrs. I wouldn't bother on really warm days unless you're there right at open. By noon, most animals find it too warm and are napping. It's better in fall and even winter. When we went on July 3rd, we got there early and saw so much activity. With the gorillas leaving, it was so wonderful to see all 3. 2 up close. Got few pictures because wanted to be present.

Got pictures with a polar bear so already 5 stars just because of that. Sharon was super helpful at the penguin exhibit. She told us many interesting facts and pointed out what each penguin was. The butterfly and bird sanctuary were nice because it felt like it was not winter. The fresh air from the plants was nice.

Absolutely terrific time during the holiday zoo lights. A light and music show every 15 minutes. Meeting Santa, great merch, even got to roam and hear the lions roaring. Only thing stopping it from a 5 star rating is they closed down the hippo area without putting up any signs except by the door. That means you walk through the rhino and elephant area.... just to walk all the way back to exit the zoo. A little rough on the kids. Wish they had put up some signs further out warning us.

I always have an AMAZING time at the Detroit Zoo. As a member, I go to the zoo weekly and check out at least 2 exhibits. Right now my favorite exhibit is the Polk Penguin exhibit. My 1-year-old is at a fun stage where he can walk and enjoy the exhibit. This is good because you can’t bring in strollers/ wagons. So I would recommend a baby carrier if you have a small child.

So disappointing. Went here as a child, have taken my children. Took my grandchildren this past weekend. Hardly and animals in the zoo. A lot of the exhibits you where not sure if there were animals in them at all. I know the animals are not always out. But I'm not even sure they were there. Also had a dinosaur exhibit and a 3D movie cinema. Theses attractions were at extra cost. With all the loss of animals at the zoo the cost of theses other exhibits should be included in price of zoo ticket. One part of zoo I kept telling my grandkids about was the glass tunnel where you can watch polar bears. When we arrived at the tunnel. No bears just a lot of algae! Dirty nasty tunnels. Very dissatisfied with our visit will probably be our last. It's sad how things that were so beautiful are just falling away.

Reasonably priced zoo with lots to see and do in a generally busy area. We went there recently for my birthday and we had a pretty good time! Haven't been there since I was a kid, so it was nice seeing the new penguin exhibit. The enclosures here are spaced out and quite beautifully done. All the animals look happy and healthy. My favorite enclosure was the kangaroo one— it was super cool being able to go inside their habitat and walk alongside them. Despite being the off season, almost all the exhibits were open, including a few restaurants. We spent a good three and a half hours there, taking our time to walk around. There's a lot of scenic walking trails, too. Overall, definitely the nicest zoo here in Michigan! It's really well managed, and everyone that works here is very friendly.

Beautiful layout. Very large zoo so plan to be there early of you want to see everything. Must wear face masks now due to pandemic. Try to reserve online at least 4 days in advance for best savings on ticket prices. Parking is a pretty penny but we parked about a block away and walked to save the 8 bucks. Most of the attractions were closed when we went but we still got to see quite a few animals. For the price though you definitely want to call ahead and see if the attractions are being maintenance or if they are available. Wouldn't want to waste a trip on only being able to see half a zoo. Besides that kids had fun

Always great to visit especially on a sunny Fall day during the pandemic. Buy tickets in advance booked for entry every 30 minutes, stay as long as you like, it keeps crowd way down which is great, only downside is restrictions to indoor exhibits, but still plenty to see. The outback Safari is cool, walking inside the actual exhibit where wallabies and kangaroos can walk right up to you.

I've been coming to the Detroit zoo my entire life. Of course zoos are a touchy subject now a days, but I've always felt that the Detroit zoo has gone above and beyond to take care of their animals and make sure they are happy. I also love the new Red Panda exhibit. Would love to see a rework to the reptile house, but other than that I love it. I can't wait to continue to bring my family here, and someday my grandchildren. 😁

Had a great time. Got our membership renewed. Got to see the Arctic Fox, wolves, and a few others see the photos I posted. Lot's of animals were out. Polar exhibit was closed, only 3 places for food and snacks open right now. So either bring food and drinks or plan on eating first thing when you arrive, or on the way out. Aside from that gotta buy tickets online, don't think you can in person yet. All in all had a great time.

Such a fun place to visit with my family! It was a real treat to see the baby chimps interacting with the elder chimps! And, observing the mother polar bear interacting with her cub was just awesome! Her attentiveness was impressive! She had her eyes on her cub the entire time, especially when she went swimming. The Detroit Zoo was a great experience and I'd definitely recommend it to anyone! Take your family or go solo, you'll definitely enjoy it!

I love this zoo so much! This was the first time I have ever came here and I cannot wait to come back! There were so many active animals and they had large nice spaces to roam around. The animals are very well kept up with and fed. This is a great zoo to take the whole family and there is something to see for everyone! Beware, put on walking shoes because there is so much walking and so much to see.

I had a great time, taking pictures of the zoo animals and enjoying with my family. I remembered when I was a little girl, my Dad used to take us to the zoo. I took my children to the zoo every year and now my children take my grandchildren to the zoo. We are keeping his Legacy Alive. Love You Dad, Happy Heavenly Father's Day 2022

We went to see the wild lights for the first time. It was snowing but so much fun. Our kiddos loved it. (4&2) We were able to see a few animals that braved the snow as a bonus. The lights were amazing and our kids loved the stepping tunes the best. We enjoyed getting popcorn to takes home but due to the weather we did eat or drink there but were excited to see hot chocolate stands and other warm foods.

Had an amazing time! It was a ton of walking over 18k steps so wear proper shoes and ensure you bring strollers. Bathrooms are pretty few and far between depending and the lack of a paper map is confusing to say the least. But it’s definitely a good and fun experience!! Would definitely return!

We bought the daytime zoo visit and night light bundle, which was well worth the price. We entered the zoo around 3 pm and saw many animals including penguins, camels, otters, tigers, chimpanzees/gorillas. We didn’t finish visiting all of the animals because of time limit. We should have been there at 2 pm, which would allow us to visit the whole zoo before closure. So please plan well and have at least 2 hours for a full zoo tour. The night lights show was also amazing and interactive. We made wishes at the giant wish tree, which was a great memory.

Our family trip to the Detroit Zoo made for an enjoyable Father’s Day weekend. With four kids in tow, another one on the way, a loving wife, grandpa, and myself, we were pleasantly surprised by how much the zoo has improved since my last visit over 40 years ago. The penguins and bear fountain were a huge hit with the family, serving as a delightful highlight of our visit. The zoo’s size is considerable compared to others I’ve experienced, both nationally and internationally, so plan on investing 3-4 hours to thoroughly enjoy the experience. The ticket prices were reasonable, yet the additional charges for special exhibits such as the Bricks Lego exhibit and the 4D movie theater were slightly off-putting. Including these in the general admission or marginally increasing the ticket price could provide a more all-encompassing experience. All in all, the Detroit Zoo offered a delightful day out, filled with education and entertainment for our whole family. A must-visit destination for animal enthusiasts of all ages.

What a great experience! Plenty of places to sit and rest with lots of shade to cool off, misters and water refill stations located throughout the zoo. Lots to see and most of the animals were pretty active. The food was all delicious and reasonably priced. The bathrooms were pretty well kept. We never felt over crowded or like our personal space was invaded as there were wide walk ways and plenty of room to move about. We spent about 5 hours at the zoo and it was time well spent!

Love the zoo. It is huge with plenty to see. Despite common complaints - you can still see active animals on a fairly hot and sunny day. Some down sides - I wish they had the old elephant prints like they did in the 1980s to stay on a path to lead you through a route. There are maps but it is nice to follow a path choice. The train is almost necessary to use to return back to the front if you've done a front to back route. Even when I was in the best shape of my life, I'd always be pretty worn out if I tried to see the whole zoo in a trip. The train is not very timely (they used to have 2 running at one point - but never when I'm there) and we've had issues 70% of the times we've tried to use it over the past 15 years. There is often a 45 minute wait and nowhere to sit to wait. They may have added benches, but we weren't able to get to that part of the line last time to find out. Pack your lunch if you can - the food is pricey and quality isn't consistent. If you want a snack or drink instead of a meal..a smoothie is $10, a pop with a lid is $9. Do yourself a favor and wear a hat or visor. Shade relief is usually off the path and most benches along it aren't in the shade. There is at least one water mister and there was a large cooling fan when we went this summer (2023). Prepare for the day and you'll enjoy all it has to offer! If you're local, check your library website for discount tickets!

Christmas wild lights was spectacular! Was here 5 years ago, so glad we came back, there is now a theme to the lights and I really enjoyed the ocean/sea creatures theme! Was so much fun to visit with family over the Christmas holidays. Parking was easy ($8), staff were present to guide you to a spot. It was very festive, the kids loved all the lights. There was a small interactive corner with the wishing tree, see saw, lit up train and bear for the children to hang out. Lots of little rest stops selling hot drinks and snacks to warm up in if you got too cold. There was a nice carousel in the middle so the children loved that! Overall we had a lot of fun and spent about 1.5-2hrs here!

This Zoo is Great! All the big animals like lions, tigers, bears, rhinos, crocodiles you name it, they have one! Great experience for any age but children especially will have an unforgettable experience plus they will learn a lot about the animals as well. Definitely worth the cost of admission.

Wow! Went on a somewhat cool and breezy day Saturday August 22nd. Most of the animals were moving more than I've ever seen them! And I've been here many times throughout the years. It was the perfect day to go to the zoo! There were people here but not too crowded... Enough space to stay 6 feet apart in most cases. Everyone wearing masks for the most part! Excellent experience :-)

Nice place to take the family on a day off, as a BCBS member I received a small discount which saved me $20 in the end which was cool. Ample concession stands, a family outing of 4 can get pricey fast tho. Big Zoo with a good amount of Animals, the penguin exhibit is definitely the favorite but was closed during my visit. Definitely recommend for anyone with a family that needs something fun to get out of the house.

I'm honestly honored that I was able to attend because of my disability it was hard to see some thing's. I use a wheelchair ♿️ so my daughter's rented me a scooter however the scooter is not equipped for people that's big with long legs, and because of that my knees were swollen. However, I will always Love the Zoo. ❣️❣️😊

I love the Detroit zoo but would I have spent $18 per ticket and $8 for parking had I of known of all the closings, probably not. Penguin exhibit, butterfly/bird house, reptile house, otter viewing building, prairie dog bubbles, chimp viewing building, giraffe indoor viewing, polar bear exhibit, the red panda Bridge (not even indoor), along with some trails that got you closer to certain animal habits, all closed. Oh but don't worry, the indoor gift shop was still open! But little bet pricey.

Sorry my pics aren't the best. This was my 1st time to the zoo lights and there were a lot of beautiful displays. Took us an hour to walk thru. Luckily it wasn't a really cold night. I'm sure the adults enjoyed the lights as much as the kids. There was food & beverages for sale. This would be a good event for the family, solo, friends or date night. I would come again

We had such a fun time at the Zoo for my daughter’s birthday. The food could have been better. We had been planning on Buddy’s but they were closed. So many good exhibits though! I think everyone in the group had something different as their favorite from the butterflies to penguins to polar bears. Definitely visit the butterflies first as they are more active earlier in the day.

My family and I love coming to the Detroit Zoo. The yearly pass is a great value! It's a great way to get the kids outdoors, walking around and learning about the wildlife out there in the world. Many great food options are available here form snacks, to burgers, to Buddy's pizza. If you have a free day and are wondering what to do with it in the metro Detroit area, I highly suggest a zoo visit!

Usually a great experience. Not today - Definitely check before you go. Went 7/27/23. Closed exhibits: butterfly house, penguin house, sea otters, red panda bridge. Exhibits with no current animals: gorillas, polar bears & seals (not a single seal), prairie dogs. Saw more animals in the Lego exhibit than live. However the bumper crop of free range ground hogs was adorable - 2 stars for that, the grizzlies, giraffe, lion. Question, Where did the historic train go? Did we miss it? Staffing was extremely light. Additionally, power outages meant all food stations were closed. Thankfully we brought our own food and water.

Wow, I have been to a few zoos in my lifetime but this place tops my list. Very walkable routes, easily accessible for all. Train ride helped with tired feet. Animal living quarters were phenomenally maintained and had beautiful scenery to look at, which the design allows patrons to get really up close to these majestic animals. Grounds were super clean and maintained. Staff were all helpful and pleasant. I really enjoyed the staff at the animal areas giving us great information about them. I totally recommend and would return.

Go into the buildings! Look around! There's a lot of hideaways and interiors that people just kept walking by. The backside of the rhino exhibit was entirely empty and it was right beside them! Look at my pic! Zoo is very well built up and they take great care of the paths. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable, willing to share without hesitation. Food staffing were great too! The wife, our friends, our kids and I went last weekend and we all had a good time, kinda pricey but over-all we all had fun. The kids loved it. Our favorite was the penguins. The place is huge, so expect to walk a lot.

Great zoo! Animals and living conditions look like they are very well taken care of. It was a wonderful time. I would highly recommend it. You can walk all the way through the zoo, and then take the train all the way back to the front as well.

Always an amazing display of lights during the Christmas time of year! It’s been a family tradition of ours for years to go and see the displays. We also have the year-round pass so we can go as much and as frequently as we want to the zoo; totally worth it and includes parking!

Kids have fun, but the zoo seemed like it had a lot of exhibits that were closed or under construction, and there was a lack of open vendors when the zoo was aware that the large groups of schools coming that day, it was a warm day when it got xloser to noon & so the kids wanted frozen drinks but they ran out of $10 cups so they could sell them in regular cups for the same price. All in all I prepaid the ticket & parking but there are no signs to tell you where you park but the attendant asks if you bought parking. You really need 3 hours to visit the zoo nicely. Hopefully, they have all the exhibits open when & if we return again.

Haven't been here in years, the tiger enclosure is very big now. And the lion cub is so cute in person! Unfortunately no indoor exhibits are open due to Covid-19 protocol but it was still an excellent visit.

The family and I went to the zoo to see the wild lights display. We had a good time looking at the lights and stoping at the hot cocoa and snack shack. It was not overly crowded and plenty of room practice good social distancing. Between parking and getting in we spent about 2 hours there. We will definitely return next year.

It was good for the most part, considering it is winter and we are fighting a pandemic. If you need to get out, this would be a good place. Not many animals but the ones we saw made us happy. Masks are required, and one place with food that is takeout only.

It has been 20+ years since we visited the Detroit Zoo. We went to see their light program. What a great time we had. Exceptional efforts were made and we will be returning next year to see their wonderful display. Scheduled ticket times kept crowds safely social distanced. Congratulations to the zoo on this exceptional Holiday program!

Terrible and unpleasant experience, nothing was open within the whole map, even the vending machines are blocked. Roughly %60 of the park was closed due to stupid restrictions, and the ones that are on display had almost no animals! I have seen more squirrels than anything else!

We visited the zoo this Saturday afternoon..it was extremely hot 100° but it was worth going to celebrate our sons b-day. We actually got the Family of 4 funday pass for $69.99 that includes a meal, admission for the zoo and souvenir cup. The burgers and fries were surprisingly good definitely worth getting! Happy to park in their new indoor garage that was free! Some of the animal exhibit were empty. They have alot of birds thou. We love the Hippo exhibit, carousel, and reptiles house. Definitely take water bottles and an umbrella it will come in handy for the sun! 🌞

We are members of the zoo and we love it. During this time it is one of the few places I feel safe taking my kids to. They encourage everyone to wear masks outside and masks are required inside. They have hand sanitizer stations all throughout the zoo. The animals are well cared for.

How best to describe the size of this zoo? VAST? Expansive? Massive? This is a great place to visit. Full of exotic animals and the place is clean filled with lots of different things to do. Be prepared because getting around this beast will take a chunk out of your day. Leaving you fulfilled!

  • 5/5 Lisa N. 3 years ago on Google
My family enjoyed visiting especially during the Christmas season. The lights were beautiful once the sun went down. Due to Covid safety precautions some of the attractions were closed off or closed early. I was very impressed by the fact that the workers took time to sanitize the surfaces on the rides.

Had an amazing time at the zoo today. We used the family deal that includes four tickets + lunch. It really was a great value for a family. Plus, the burgers were delicious. We thoroughly enjoyed the animal exhibits and were pleasantly surprised at the variety of animals they had. Our only issue was that the zoo layout is incredibly confusing. There aren't that many maps displayed throughout the property and there doesn't really seem like a logical way to go through it without missing something or backtracking. Regardless, we had an amazing time, and the holiday lights were a bonus.

We had a great time yesterday with the Fun Pass tickets. They are sooo worth the extra little bit per person. I didn't look into Lory Landing before we went and it was one of the best things of the entire day. We went to Kiddie Park on Saturday for about an hour and it was a bit young for my 9 year old but my 5 year old was happy. Everyone was happy at the zoo aside from too much walking for my 5 year old. We fed the giraffes for $5/person too which was a very quick experience.

Love our San Antonio zoo!! So many fun animals, and things to see. They do a great job of providing information and facts along the way. Fun for every age!

  • 2/5 Taylor G. 3 years ago on Google
Very disappointed, we came in a group of 8 bought our tickets online including 4 meal vouchers , all zoo staff we encountered were so rude! Not helpful at all, then we go for lunch after waiting an hour they came out to tell us they were all out of burger patties, after an HOUR! Then we ordered something else and they brought out something completely, then gave us so much attitude when we were unhappy, very dissatisfied with its our zoo experience this time , we spent a lot of money to be treated so poorly , almost better to just drive farther for a better experience.

we were disappointed.. there are barely any animals to enjoy. There are no vendors open. Even so, there could have been some help with making the atmosphere more festive than a city park.. like can't u play some zoo music inside the park or something? An excellent Zoo for a day's visit. We visit on just about every trip to Detroit, especially to see the red pandas. With the current covid, some of the exhibits are unavailable, but it is still a great place to visit. We believe the prices are in line with any zoo, from the entry fee, to parking, and even the food. As said, our main favorite is the red panda habitat, and we like just about everything else. We hope to see the penguins in their renovated building soon. We will definitely go again.

Don't go until the "viral" restrictions are lifted. The only redeeming factor is some animals can withstand outdoors so you might get a glimpse. Owners, if you are not fully open - tickets are not full price. More common sense, less greed.

Pick a day that you are feeling adventurous, bundle up, and head to the zoo! The animals are so much more lively in this weather and bonus there are much fewer people to share the good viewing spots with. You must reserve your time spot and entry tickets online before your visit. Time slots are staggered so there are fewer people passing through making social distancing easier. The refreshment stands are closed however I believe the Buddy's Pizza Restaurant was open for business. Dress warm and have fun!

The Zoo lights this year was better than ever. My family has been going to this event for several years and it only gets bigger and better each time. endangers animals by confining them in agitating conditions and forcing them into stressful and unnecessary situations, then claims the harm they literally *created themselves* is “unexpected” y’all are trash and anyone who goes here is funding animal misery.

  • 2/5 E. B. S. 3 years ago on Google
Nice try, but a little disappointed. I will say the reason for that is I went for years to the Toledo Zoo Lights. Toledo has been doing holiday lights longer and is much better funded. If you haven't been to Toledo, you could think that the walk through the lights is one of the best family holiday traditions you can find in Metro Detroit. Lots of places to get food and drink. Path clearly marked. I might be back in a few years to see what they added.

Super disappointed, this place should be closed in the winter or steeply discounted. Small sign on the window indicating all "attractions" are closed. Apparently, attractions extends to any indoor exhibits: Penguins, butterflies, reptiles etc. No heaters or tents anywhere in the park, which would be expected for the price, especially considering every building is closed. $61 for a family of 3. Several of the walking paths are closed as well due to not being shoveled. Rest assured, the gift shop is fully open to catch you on your way out. Super disappointed, wont be back.

One star for the fact that their website doesn't clearly state that almost everything is currently closed due to covid. I did some searching after and I finally found a little section about it hidden within the website, it should be on the home page as the mask policy is.

If I could leave less than one star I would. Zoo was poorly kept up with everything was closed no place to get water or anything to drink even with covid you'd think water would still be important. Could walk quite a bit before even seeing one animal.if the park plans on closing 95% of things there they should lower their prices! Highly highly do not recommend.

I am not a huge fan of the Detroit zoo and now with Covid, none of the buildings are open. We saw a few red pandas, 3 tigers, a few Buffalo, a few kangaroos, a whole flock of freezing with their legs shaking flamingos and some other random bird who screamed "help" over and over, I imagine it was because it was freezing cold out! I just don't understand how it would be sold out and full price with so little to see and do. That being said, my friend had a great time playing Pokémon Go and we got a few steps in.

I wanted to make reservations at the Detroit zoo. I saw a ton of open general admission tickets. So so I went ahead and bought a membership for the year. When I went to reserve a place for the day all the membership spots were filled. And it turns out they won't let members have a general admission slot. So I spent a ton of money and I can't go to the zoo. They won't refund and they won't help you at all. All they can say is they are sorry. Also of note you cannot see how many membership slots are available until after you buy a membership. I am more than a little upset

We had the unique experience of filming at the zoo for a About Royal Oak & Zoo Video. It was a great experience! Lines for everything we’re short, the staff is very friendly. The new restaurant Table 28 (the letters look like Jurassic Park) severs the very tasty Great Lakes Crossing coffee (I had a nitro brew) local sourced honey & foods. The BBQ Mac & cheese was delightful. It replaced the Arctic Circle Cafe & did not disappoint

We visited for the first time on July 4th. There is a great assortment of animals. Enclosures are interesting, natural looking, and clean. I liked the selections in the gift shop, and appreciated that they weren't trying to sell things on every corner of the zoo. Even with the heat that day, we were able to see at least one of almost all the animals. The penguin exhibit was closed for renovation and the train was not active. They're only losing a star because several times we were unsure which way to go or what animal was in an exhibit due to lack of signage. We were told we could access a map by scanning a QR code but were unable to find the map on the website. We would visit again.

It was a beautiful cool day. And as much fun as when I was a kid. Foods A little pricey. But delicious. The Otters are so friendly, they swam up to me and played, then did back rolls. It was beautiful to see the tigers sleeping so we'll. Such a beauty. The peacock 🦚 walked with us quit a ways. And being able to go in with the Kangaroo's was amazing

My son had an amazing time. We took a ride on the train. We walked and walked and walked some more. We had fun seeing all the animals. We didn't get a chance to see the butterflies and polar bears. Their sanctuaries are open, it was just too many people in there at the time.

  • 4/5 Zach B. 2 years ago on Google
A very "park like" zoo experience. Lots of grass and picnic tables and benches. Most of the exhibits provided good views of the animals. The bear exhibits were particularly good.

Love love love Detroit zoo. I haven’t been in a few years. Pros: - big beautiful lush exhibits - app map of the zoo which helped get rid of that old paper map and would show me real time where i was so the exhibits where easy to locate - having timed entrance I feel helps the lines move quick and with the crows, I feel I was actually able to see everything I wanted - lots of good shade and water fill stations - has an air conditioned breast feeding and baby care station if you need a break from the heat Cons: - penguin exhibit was closed - limited food options - could benefit from having more hands on and active exhibits. As well as more photo opportunities.

This place is amazing to go to if you like animals, and amazing customer service. I suggest you ride the train to the back because that is where all the cool animals are. If you go on the train you have a really nice view to see. Me and my family loved walking and exploring animals, I totally recommend! ❤️😊

My family had a wonderful time at the 2021 ZooBoo. Lots of costumes, staged performances (some interactive) and decorative exhibits along your walk. I was disappointed that there were no treats along the path. We only got a bag with 2 candies. Aside from that, my toddler and 1year old had a good time. We hope to return for the Christmas lights.

I love it every time I come. I just wish the penguin exhibit was open the past two times I've come but I hope the next time we're here they'll be open and have a great closure for them! We made a spur of the moment trip to the Detroit Zoo early in October. In hindsight, this is probably not the best time to visit the zoo. Most of the animals were sleeping, and quite a few exhibits were closed. It does seem like a very nice zoo, and we will probably come back in the Spring. The Halloween decorations were really cool!

New to Michigan and have avoided being out much due to the pandemic. Highly recommend "wild lights" here at the zoo. There was plenty of space to feel like you were ok with or without masks. The kids loved the lights, and there was nice ambiance with the music they played. I highly recommend heading off the main street into the "enchanted forest" towards the beginning of the walk. It was nice to walk amongst the trees and the lights, plus they had flashing lights zooming overhead that my daughter swore were fairies. One of my favorite areas for sure.

I have been to the Detroit Zoo innumerous times since the 1960's, able to enjoy this zoo from a child's perspective, and now a grandparent's viewpoint. The zoo has had its ups and downs over the years, and I'm pleased to see a quality family experience exists as never before. The Zoological Society has made this "Vitamin Z" encounter as much about environmental preservation as it does about the animals and their habitats. Special attractions throughout the year to include the spectacular "Wild Lights" display that my wife and I attended last night, are exactly what makes this attraction a first-class family adventure. I usually complain about the price, but I can't imagine trying to properly care for the residents of the zoo, and the picturesque surroundings on less. Hopefully, we'll soon be able to visit the penguins again!

  • 5/5 Misty W. 2 years ago on Google

3 stars because most of the workers are sitting on their phone at whichever booth or food booth, then give you dirty looks & an attitude as if you’re interrupting them.. Bathrooms were gnarly, gross. Workers on drive carts want to plow through the crowd. Animals were great, an overall good time & family time well spent. They just need to get some new employees all around.

The animals that were out were great but was disappointed by the lack of concession stands open and the fact that there were a lot of animals not even out. Went to see the flamingos and they were all locked in a small cage I'm the corner of the exhibit. Could just be because we went on a weekday and not a weekend or because of the construction but still wish we could've seen more. Still overall a great time and a good way to spend the day we family.

The dinosaurs are actually pretty cool, my kids loved them (although it is an extra fee even with a membership). It says the Dino’s are only there until September 5th 2022, but it would be cool to make that a year round part of the park. You can bring your own food into the park, which makes it a great spot for the family and for a picnic.

  • 4/5 Shutterbug 1 year ago on Google
We enjoyed our visit! I love that the enclosures aren't completely fenced, makes the animals seem closer. I was impressed that one of the food stands gave us water cups for free and there were lots of bottle refill stands throughout the park. The only thing I wish is that there was more signage letting you know where you are or what you're headed towards. You can fit it all in one day but your feet will be sore! Thankfully I live not far away so I can't wait to go see what we missed :)

This is our first visit after the renovation and while we arrived late and venture only half way through, that in itself was a wonderful time and we are excited to set aside another (much earlier) visit to take the train, tour the full circle of the west end and return on the train for another wonderful time exploring and revisiting beloved animals and birds and so on and so forth. YAY Parking is a breeze, online ticket buying is pretty user friendly, staff is just wonderful in every way. Can't wait to check out the second half. WONDERFUL job all around to everyone. Hell, even us crowds had a great vibe. Weather was great. . .

One of the largest zoos in the country at 120+ acres. Plan 4+ hours or repeat trips. The penguin exhibit is well known as fantastic. But make sure to go through the Australian outback -- so cool to enjoy the Kangaroos and wallaby with no barriers and stop by the Cassowary to check out a modern day dinosaur. Too many excellent exhibits to name them all.

  • 5/5 Drake E. 9 months ago on Google
Okay, so if you read negative reviews about this zoo, they were wrong. This park is nicely spaced out and features an open-air viewing of most exhibits. The food is on par with what you'd expect from a popular attraction. It is not the best burger you'll ever eat. It's not the worst either. The price is comparable to other parks. I have been too and cheaper, in my opinion. We spent the entire day at the zoo enjoying the various exhibits and attractions.

Wonderful place to go with the kids. My advice: bring a wagon with shade (and sunscreen!) so that your kids can sit in it. Also, bring a cooler for lots of water, drinks, food, and snacks. The food here is quite pricey, so I'd encourage bringing your own food, especially if you have little ones with allergies and intolerance to certain foods as well. The best day to go is when it's not too hot! On days when it's -just right- and sunny, you'll see a lot of animals! We saw the lions, gorillas, giraffes, monkey, camels, and so much more outside, and I was actually shocked that they were all out and visible! Tickets are expensive, but if you don't get them the day of, I believe they're much less expensive. I'd also consider a membership if you plan on going often. I asked about discounts for oakland County residents and students, and I believe she said you are able to get a discount for your county (but double check on which one) if you're a part of a membership.

DEFINITELY WOULD RECOMMEND GOING ,Me and my children had a wonderful experience at the zoo and I had to share a little of our movie experience .. we saw rio The effects was amazing we were able to see snow.. we also saw bubbles our chairs had motion vibration.. we even smelled hot cocoa when the hot coco was being mixed on the screen.. we also felt air upon our faces when the birds would fly 💗💗💗💗 The penguin exhibit and the polar bear exhibit was amazing.. we also had our pictures drawn by the artist that was at the zoo. Everybody was so friendly and helpful and everything was extremely clean. The gift shop had tons of items to choose from... I also liked the play area also

The zoo is beautifully maintained, full of lovely animals, and staffed by intelligent, friendly, helpful people. I'd recommend for families of any size or people with any disabilities. The zoo is easy to traverse with many bathrooms, areas to rest, and interiors to avoid troublesome weather. Truly a fun, educational, and wholesome experience!

Had a great time with the family! You are allowed to bring a cooler which came in handy if you have little ones spent just about 3 hours walking around to see everything they did a great job cleaning and maintaining the grounds. Do recommend purchasing tickets online ahead they offer a Little discount and theirs 2 lines for scan and go. We waited no time!

  • 5/5 Wendy C. 8 months ago on Google
It's a wonderful zoo. It's clean too. Prices are high on food and drinks. Bring your own if possible. They have filtered water stations to refill water bottles though. Picnic areas are available and clean. The only complaint I have are the maps. They could do a better job. No more paper maps are available. You scan or look at the postings. We went during the week and it wasn't crowded at all. We also pre-bought tickets and parking online which saved a few dollars per person. You also can buy the extended pack in advance as well. It allows you to go to the 4d movie, brickland, ride the train and carousel. Definitely recommend doing that as well. Nothing to say other than it's beautifully landscaped so it's perfect for pictures. I'll add pictures eventually lol Highly recommend taking a trip there.

This place is amazing, the park is getting some upgrades within the last few years, it is feeling more connected inside, there is so much to see and do you could easily spend the weekend here and not see it all I feel like, I did wish the farm house area had chickens you could feed, or a petting zoo type thing. with pigs, goats and chickens or something for them to touch. When we went it was Tuesday morning, literally every single animal was outside and me and the kids got to see EVERYTHIGN! It was so amazing! This zoo animals really are active and seem to be healthy and well taken care of. there was no litter or garbage anywhere on the ground. There was a constant supply of workers taking care of the park and making it wonderful for us to enjoy, I just greatly appreciate everything the park has done the last few years, its really coming along!

We came from out of town to visit family and decided this would be something fun to do. The train was very disappointing, it only travels to the back of the zoo or the front of the zoo. Most trains at a zoo go around the entire zoo so the guests can see everything. You have to purchase a separate ticket if you want to ride the train both ways.

  • 4/5 Ink 8 months ago on Google
Great zoo, lots to do and see. Walked for four hours and still had stuff to see. Only rating four stars because we are from out of state, Ohio, and our cards didn't work at the gate or at any gift shops and the service of the people there was very nonchalant/lackluster. The response we got was 'yea it don't work haha'. There must be an issue because our cards worked everywhere else in MI. The issue was resolved because we used an ATM but very clear no one particularly cared that there is an issue.

  • 4/5 Donna J. 8 months ago on Google
There were too many animals off exhibit. Plenty of reptiles to see. No aquariums with fish. Food and drinks were way overpriced. Lots of walking with blank areas. However, it was still fun. My kiddos had a blast. The train ride was nice. Bathrooms were clean. Overall we had a good day at the zoo.

  • 4/5 Brittany J. 8 months ago on Google
The Detroit Zoo is always a good time! A membership is definitely the most affordable way to go if you plan to visit more than a couple of times per year. The free parking and members entrance are great perks. The food throughout the zoo is good but pricey. Fortunately, the zoo allows you to pack food, and there's plenty of places to have a picnic. The only real downfall is that there will always be a fair amount of animals you don't get to see. They're either not at the exhibit or they are inside or they're hiding or just too far away to really see. Toledo Zoo has Detroit beat on that.

Highly recommend, we spend the afternoon there and found ourselves absolutely captivated by the wide variety of animals available. They have a convenient map, both on their website and on stands scattered around the park, which allowed us to find all of our favourites with ease. We found the penguins, camels, giraffes, and chimps to be particularly captivating.

Spent about 4 hours at the zoo. We got to walk the whole zoo and see most all the animals. It was a great day! We especially liked the mist stations around the paths 😅 All staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. Animals all looked happy, heathy and well taken care of. 🐾🦏🦦🦓🐅🐫🦎🐾

They are making improvements, but still have a long way to go… Seriously you pay good money to enter the zoo, you expect to see animals. I visit once a year to donate my money, hoping that one day the zoo will be filled with plenty of animals that we can all see. Instead of what seems to be empty displays.

  • 5/5 Akhil M. 7 months ago on Google
It's very close to Windsor, a great one day trip. They have kept the animals in their natural habitat. You can see animals from different continents. You can also find some rescued species and close to endangered species too. Kids would love it as they are the highest population you will find there. You can have a picnic inside as well. Amphibians, butterflies and reptiles have a separate closed environment in which the humidity and temperatures are maintained. The main attraction for me was penguins and Polar Bears.

  • 4/5 Kevin D. 7 months ago on Google
A cloudy day made the animals more active. I was sad to see the Gorilla exhibit was shut down. Finally got to see the Wolverine(Go Blue). The best the zoo has to offer is the Polar Bear exhibit. They were both very active and seeing them through the underground tunnel is a very unique experience.

  • 4/5 Nick S. 7 months ago on Google
Enjoyed the Detroit zoo. We spent 6.5h there hitting all attractions and sometimes circling back to see some twice. Walked about 5.5 miles. We were able to see every available animal except for the beavers and the wallabies. While circling back twice through the new penguin exhibit and the snow monkeys (my favorite). This park is a full day trip if you actually stop at each exhibit. However when sitting down at any location to eat there were a lot of bees that wanted anything sweet.

  • 4/5 Bobby K. 7 months ago on Google
Very nice zoo. Great variety of animals. Also there are usually some additional activities for adults and children A little 4D theater with 2 alternating movies. Several food establishments. Could probably benefit from more since there are long lines for food. There is a train you can take from one end to the other of the park. Would recommend buying tickets in advance since they are cheaper.

By being here you get a very good hike, a bunch of cool pictures of the animals, and a great time with family or friends. Unfortunately some sections were "not so greatly maintained" but overall.its a good experience (my first time ever here) . This includes the penguins exhibit as well as the amphibians at no extra cost for them. Buy your tickets online for shorter line and saving a couple of bucks 💸 on every ticket 🎫

  • 2/5 Rachel S. 6 months ago on Google
Total cost to enter was over 65 dollars for two adults. Parking is not included, that is an additional 8 dollars. We saw quite a few of the animals but not all were out. We were starving but none of the food places opened until after 1pm so we left early to go eat. People with strollers were lining up outside the food vendors before they could even open. Potter Park zoo in Lansing was smaller, cheaper, and better overall. Do better Detroit Zoo.

It was a very good experience, my kid enjoyed the experience. It is a long stretch and be prepared and planned for the trip. Some add-ons to the zoo, such as the Lego animals were 4D shows were good. I like how they have provided water fountains at many spots.
