Excellent museus... lots of instruments and they have some portable tablets where you can type a number and hear the instrument, they provide headphones, but if you have a bighead or want something more comfortable, bring your own. Tables and headphones at this moment are free of charge. But they can't guarantee the headphones. Currently the restaurant on the 6th floor is closed. Be aware that they have a store inside the museum where you can purchase some very nice music related gifts.

What a cool museum! It's included in the Brussels Card but if you don't have it, tickets are €15, which I think is still worth it. It's so unique. It's a collection of musical instruments from all over the world, and many of them are hundreds of years old. All of the instruments are in a glass case or behind a rope (for obvious reasons) and they give you an audio guide to listen to what it sounds like. There were so many instruments I had never even heard of. We got there at around 10:30 on a Saturday and there were a good amount of people there already (they open at 9:30). It got crowded later on so I would recommend going on a weekday if you can. We spent about an hour and a half there and got through most of everything we wanted. There are four floors, so at first, we were listening to every piece but eventually we started to just choose the things we were interested in. If you were to listen to everything, my guess is that it would probably take 3-4 hours. They have over 2,000 instruments. Highly recommend, if you love music and are looking for something different to do!

(Translated by Google) The MIM is located in the heart of the historic center of Brussels. The visit is already worth the detour just for the Art Nouveau architecture of its building. The little ones will appreciate it and the adults will be delighted. Small less positive note some panels of explanations are really badly placed or not very visible in a sometimes dim lighting.

(Translated by Google) Very disapointed. While the collection of instruments is impressive, there is far too little explanation. The audioguide only gives musical excerpts and barely a few lines of explanation, at least when it works (out of 4 audioguides three did not work correctly, even after asking for new ones - annoying). Add to this an unfriendly welcome (if not one or the other person who stands out for his kindness), the sauce did not take. However, there is a way to make this superb place an extraordinary place, much more educational and welcoming.

This was brilliant! For musicians and even just music lovers this place was incredible. There is so much to see and you can listen to each instrument via a hand held device provided free on entry. There a lockers to store your bags and toilets. It’s huge! With over 200 instruments, so if you really want to take it all in you would need minimum of 3 hours. My sons favourite part was the piano floor.

Really good museum, love the audio that will play a short music piece of the instruments as well. Information is well displayed and educational. The building itself is beautiful and love the history display about it as well.

Unbelievably good, great for kids. You receive a tablet that you input the audio numbers of the particular instrument and can listen to it on headphones. I thought the whole museum was on the first floor I walked through but it’s on three or four floors. The building is incredible, this museum should be on the list of must see things to do in Bruxells. My pictures don’t do it justice, as I was to involved in the music itself

If you like music and have time for only 1 museum in Brussels, you should visit MIM. Huge variety of different musical instruments, free audio guide that allows you to listen to music some instruments do. That was amazing! It took me 1.5+ hours, and I was in a hurry. Definitely recommend visiting!

This was a very fun museum, with so many instruments from throughout the ages. They give you an audioguide where you can listen to the instruments being played so that the experience is much more enlightening. I learned a lot and really enjoyed my time here, so this museum can definitely be recommended if you want to try a different kind of museum!

A really awesome museum. I went along with my 3 year old daughter and even she was thrilled with the experience. It's really heartening to see the efforts of the museum staff. It was truly amazing to hear the sounds of musical instruments from all corners of the world. The tibetan instrument section is a must hear.

My wife and I spent 3 very enjoyable hours here, and would have spent longer if they hadn't been closing! The included audio guide is really interesting, as while it doesn't offer explanations of the instruments, it does provide many sound clips of them being played, usually as part of a song. Tip: look carefully at the listing for each instrument, as some also have videos of them being played. Most of the signs are in Dutch, French, and English. Also note that the museum has air conditioning, which was so nice on a hot August day! There were some closures of parts of the museum for renovation (I believe the cafe was unfortunately closed), so check the web site for status before you go.

I really loved this museum. Their audio guide is a little different, instead of telling you things about the exhibits, it plays short musical arrangements played on the instruments you're viewing. Which really brings them alive and makes the experience much richer. There are so many instruments, from primitive bone whistles to intricate pianos from all kinds of eras. If you like music at all, don't skip this one!

Being obsessed with music, I was equally obsessed with this museum!! I spent 4+ hours just in the first 3 floors and time ran out, and it was honestly amazing! Many important instruments were equipped with audio guides that played music audio to illustrate what an instrument sounds, and it covers generally the entire music history. The collection really satisfied me.

(Translated by Google) Rude staff, we got pushed out on closing. It's amazing to warn of the closing at the time of closing, it would be much smarter to warn us 10-15min in advance and repeat it once or twice afterwards instead of starting at 5 behind us to push us towards the exit. A real labyrinth to get out, without a clear explanation, we ended up leaving through the back door. It is very good to offer audio guides but without them, the visit is not very useful because there is very little explanation available, it would be better to include them in the price! In addition, they kept bugging during the visit, we each had several problems with these audio guides which stopped working for no reason. Otherwise, very beautiful building and very beautiful instruments, it was impressive and interesting.

A huge collection of musical instruments is presented in well organised exhibitions. Additionally a lot of historical and technical information is available in the displays. The audio guide provides audio samples of the organs and some extra media content. A visit is recommended for everyone, not only the music fanatics. The ticket is a bit expensive (15€) but it is included in the Brussels card.

🎷🎺🎼🥁🎸🪕The Musical Instruments Museum in Brussels is an excellent destination for music enthusiasts and anyone interested in learning more about different types of instruments from around the world. The museum has an impressive collection of instruments from various cultures, and the exhibits are presented in an engaging way that is both informative and entertaining. One of the standout features of the museum is the audio guide that visitors can use to learn more about the different instruments on display. The guide provides detailed information about the history and cultural significance of each instrument, as well as audio samples of how they sound.

Very interesting museum with 3 large rooms detailing the history and progress of multiple musical instruments. They have a room dedicated to traditional instruments from around the world, another focused on Western countries, and the third regarding keyboards, considered one of the only European contributions. The whole museum is mostly written in Flemish and French, so you may think about getting an audioguide for more information. On each of the floors there is also a cool alcove (outside the exhibit rooms) that offers a beautiful view of the city and the gardens.

Definitely a must see. The museum is wonderful. Many instruments from different parts of the world and times are presented and the best part is that you are given an audio device where you can put the numbers you see on the instruments and can actually hear them played. Also there are free lockers for visitors to put their bags if they want to. Great experience!

Most interesting museum I have ever been to. When you go into museum it feels like you are traveling back in time. It's possible to see musical instruments that are older than 400 years old. There is even a floor dedicated to only traditional ones. Furthermore, you can even listen some of this instruments from audio guide for which you have to pay 2 euros. Definitely worth to visit!

For fans of music history such as myself, this museum is trully amazing, it's fascinating how many ways to recreate sounds, notes and music have people found over the centuries, regardless of how far technology was at the time.

Medium sized collection of musical instruments spread on three floors, roughly split into traditional, classical and mechanical. You will need at least 1 hour to walk through the collection. The audio guide presents many of the instruments recordings. Can get quite crowded on weekends.

Very nice collection of musical instruments, well maintained and presented. I was a bit disappointed that the lower level, which appeared to contain mechanical instruments, appeared to be closed off. I say appeared to, because signage was lacking and I didn't want to ask any questions of the front staff insofar as they looked like they wished they were dead.

A wonderful museum with an astounding array of instruments of the world. Well curated, clean, a lovely building and a clear layout. DO NOT forget to bring a set of headphones so you can HEAR how many of the instruments sound. I only wish the devices they give you were UNABLE to play aloud - many people are just walking around playing the sounds on the speaker (which can get very annoying in such a quiet space).

We went on Easter, and there wasn't much of a line. I was actually here before, but right when the museum was under renovation, and the audio tours had not been available. This time they were, and it was a completely different experience. Hearing how the instruments sound and, occasionally, watching how they are played added a whole other dimension to the visit. I wish I had the entire day to really listen to every instrument on exhibit. We rushed our visit in about 2 hours, but managed to cover all levels.

I am so happy I visited this lovely Museum. It hosts probably the largest collection of musical instruments. You can borrow a tablet with headphones which enable you to listen to the sound of each instrument by just typing the number on the tablet. There is also a gift store inside and a restaurant on the last floor.

Musical Instruments Museum of Brussels is an incredible place where one can find how instruments developed from prehistoric to modern times. There are over hundreds of instruments from different countries, cultures, and times. With their phone and app, you can listen to the sound of most of these. I would like to go back there again because one day was not enough. FYI, you can access this museum for free if you have annual museum pass of Belgium.

Totally fascinating. I spent over three hours here and looked at just about every instrument and listened to a lot of the musical extracts. Go, if you are at all interested in music. And in an amazing building. Note: at time of writing the restaurant is not open.

They have a grand assortment of instruments across centuries and have recordings of the majority of them so you can hear the music they make. However, 15€ per entry seemed a little pricey to us. If you love musical history or have a passion for instruments, we imagine you will love it, otherwise, grab a Belgian beer or waffle and go people watch/walk the city instead.

This is the second time I have been to this museum and I loved every minute of it. The collections are beautiful, the music through the audio guides are well selected. Architecture of the building is one of a kind! Looking forward to returning for the restaurant view of Brussels which unfortunately was under construction. If you appreciate the art of music, I recommend this museum.

This was a really fun place to spend an hour or two! You get a headset so you can hear a recording of each instrument. It was a very relaxing/ quiet environment, since everyone is wearing the headsets and making their own way through the museum. I learned a lot about instruments and how/ where/ why they were made. Check it out!

Excellent place to relax and enjoy the musical instruments. I would love to go back. This time with kids. Just one thing in souvenir shop the lady was more interested in blobing with her neighbor on the phone about some - "very important stuff"… than to answer on my question. But at the end I got what I wanted.

Todella hieno ja käymisen arvoinen museo. Kannattaa ottaa sisääntuloaulasta audiolaite ja kuulokkeet. Monista soittimista on esimerkkiäänityksiä ja lisätietoa. Pari tuntia meni hetkessä ja pitempäänkin olisi viihtynyt jollei olisi ollut muita suunnitelmia päivälle.

Located 5-10 minutes on foot from the Brussel-Centraal/Bruxelles-Centrale station, this museum is an absolute must-see if you're interested in music. I came here with my partner and it took us around 2 hours to see every exposition room and the souvenir shop. It is possible to buy the tickets when entering, but it's best to buy them online, as there is a limited amount of tickets available per timeslot. Right after scanning/presenting your tickets, you can ask to receive an audioguide (and headphones if you don't have your own) for free. It was incredible to see how the instruments we all know evolved throughout time (and in different parts of the world!), or to discover ones that we'd never even seen before. Most instruments also have a code you can input on the device given at the reception to listen what they sound like, or listen to songs where they're used. Some also have videos and more information about them. There are instruments of all types, so I can guarantee that you will find something you like! There is also an exhibition floor dedicated to pianos and keyboards in general, which you will surely love. I can't describe every single instrument showed here, but I can say that some were old, some were VERY old, some were exotic, some were bizarre, and some were straight out works of art. Most floors have got a toilet in case it's needed, right after going up or down the stairs, before the actual exhibition rooms. The museum has got a restaurant as well, but it's currently closed to date of this review - as far as I've understood, not for long. The souvenir shop has got a variety of items, ranging from simple instruments and magnets to jewelry and glassware. It's also not only about this museum and music but about Belgium and art in general. If you're in Brussels and have two hours to spare, you absolutely need to pay this museum a visit!

So, this actually isn’t a review of the museum itself, rather the view from there. Full disclosure, I didn’t go inside the museum. So the view from infront of the museum is THE best in the city ! It overlooks the majority of the city and may I add that it is breathtaking ! The picture ain’t doing it Justice.

Best museum in Brussels. Take your time, you'll need at least 2-3 hours to visit the whole museum. They have a lot of instruments and you can listen how they sound (sometimes 20-30 sec samples, sometimes full 2-3 minutes audio). There's a full collection to view and listen and you don't want to rush it. Visit all the floors, including the underground one. It's worth it, even if you're not a musician or an aficionado.

And be sure to (!!!) take an audio guide, without it, a museum from a magnificent turns into just good or even good. Get ready to spend at least 2-3 hours here. There were no queues (arrived in mid-August), there were few visitors, nothing prevented immersion and perception. (Translated by Google) Located next to Place Royale and accessible by bus 71 which stops right next to the entrance, the MiM is in my opinion a benchmark in the world of musical museums. I was first impressed by the beauty of the facade, but also by the interior of the place, very well appointed, maintained, and cleaned, with a mixture of wood and expertly carved stones. As for the music itself, the collection of instruments of all origins, ages, and details is truly impressive. The panels teach us many things about the history of music, the evolution of sounds, the search for new things, the sociology around music. I spent 3 hours in 2 visits in this museum, but we could stay there several days cumulated while making the most of the audio guide. An obligatory passage in Brussels. (Translated by Google) Very nice museum, with an impressive collection, on the other hand, allow 1 whole afternoon to see everything. The only flaw, the lighting is not always very well thought out, and suddenly, we do not see the details of some instruments.

(Translated by Google) If I could, I would even put ZERO! Very rude staff. We barely entered when a lady from the staff pointed out to us that the last visits were at 3:30 p.m. (it was 3:29 p.m. and we had booked) At the museum level, I won't even be able to give my opinion as we were refused entry because my companion had a backpack. A man told us very unpleasantly "it is written on the site that large backpacks are prohibited". So I insisted that her bag was not big and that we had left work early so that we could visit the museum, but nothing to do. We had barely left the building when they blocked the doors of the museum (although it is supposed to close at 5 p.m.). I have never seen such a welcome! I was able to read on the site that the backpack measures 34cm x 22cm x 12cm, so I measured the backpack in question and this one was smaller! It seems that these staff are not very keen on working and giving visitors a good time. Personally, I had wanted to visit this museum for a very long time but after this experience, I will never set foot there again!

(Translated by Google) That day, really rude, unfriendly and unruly staff. In times of coronavirus, closing at 30, and at 29 a message warns you that it closes in 1 minute !!! A shame. Doesn't deserve stars, just to leave a comment .... The staff is to be put out without notice !! No distancing, not always brand, the staff are not old ... Really a shame ...

Very interesting museum with a vast selection of musical instruments, mainly focused on Europe. The collection is very well presented and discuss on the evolution of those instruments connected to innovations that were taking place in society. A must do when you are in Brussels. I am giving a 3-star rating though because I believe they shouldn't sell tickets without an audioguide. Without it, your experience is much below standard. But they don't tell you that, so when you realise your mistake and try to correct it, it might be too late because they might have ran out of guides (like it was my case). They try to compensate by offering a web version that you can play in your mobile, but the internet connection inside the building is very poor so the content just won't download. In summary, don't bother booking your visit without an audioguide. Also, for such a big building with so many floors, the lack of toilets is unreasonable. I had to cut my time short at the museum simply because I couldn't hold it anymore. The corona measures in place make it even harder because you have to follow the flow, so once you pass the only toilets in the building, you will not be able to go back! Take this into account when planning your visit. Make sure you don't drink lots of water (my mistake!)

Lovely museum, in a beautiful building, close to the Museum of Fine Arts, in Brussels. The building itself is very interesting, and it almost looks like it does not belong there between other modern buildings. Once you go inside, you have to pay 10€ for the museum, but if you only want to go to the restaurant at the top, it is free. Yes, there is a lift. The restaurant is located at level 10, and it has a terrace too. The view is OK, but there are plastic/glass windows which partially obstruct the view. The museum itself spreads over the first four floors, and has a nice range of instruments from all over the world. Would definitely recommend visiting it, if you have the time, even though I think it might be a little bit overpriced.

This museum you really need to take a lot of time and patience to see all that you need to see, it is one of the museums that I can say I was amazed by the beauty and to see how many different instruments there's in this world

The music instruments museum is a place of inspiration and joy to any fellow music composer. They feature hundreds of different instruments from the early era to even the modern arts. Here you can witness masterpieces like the bösendorfer, moog, and wurlitzer in addition to many other fine pieces of history. I strongly recommend getting the audio guide for an additional 2€. It enables you to listen to musical pieces of hundreds of the jnstruments on display, ranging from short to long performances. I recommend this place for any fellow music lover and creator.

The museum itself was very nice but the cafe is supposed to be famous but it was horrible. The staff was just really rude and didnt know anything. We waited for half an hour and then they told us that they can finally seat us even though it was not crowded. After waiting for another 15 mins, they told us the kitchen was closed!

To be listed as "must-do" in Bruxelles. The quality of the music instruments exposed is unic, the architecture of the building just incredible. Audio-visit highly suggested as this is not a watching visit only, it should be listened! On the roof-top, a restaurant offers several good dishes with some veg options.

Great place to learn about new instruments. You do see a lot of snare based instruments and piano like instruments. Everything wad great had a fun time but the audio guide crashed twice and it lagged immensely what sometimes became frustrating if you just wanna quickly listen to an instrument.

  • 4/5 Chiara P. 2 years ago on Google
The collection if musical instrument is wonderfull and really wide. There is a very wide range if instruments from all over the world and from the pre-history to now. I would suggest to the staff to be kinder and nicer, and to improve the english language level, so if an international visitor has a problem the staff have to be able to solve it; the audioguide allows you to hear the sound of the 80% of the instruments in the collection, maybe it would have been interesting to have some explanations about how some unusual instruments are played; and I would also suggest to give the visitors some headphones with the audioguide, otherwise it gets quite noisy with all the audio- guides playing out loud. It was good but it can be really better!

Stop by, at least to look and take a picture. Not going inside, I visited the place on my way through Brussels. I strongly recommend to stop by and take a look. The building looks really cool, with all that details, like from some historical movie.

Visiting this amazing museum again after years. It’s a place where I can stay for hours, listening to all kinds of musical instruments and learning about their history and evolution. One star less for the staff working there talking loudly for a lengthy period of time that disturbed my music listening. It’s absolutely worth a visit or two or three or more...

(Translated by Google) Without an audio guide you can get through this quickly and you miss a lot of information. We do not know whether it has to do with the corona measures, but the set-up, the route through the museum, is somewhat claustrophobic. What remains unfortunate (and we notice this in many Brussels museums) is that almost all security personnel are monolingual French. Not a problem for us linguistically, but we can imagine that this can give some French ignorants an unpleasant feeling. Some attention should be given to this.
