Very peaceful and scenic place. Huge lake area. Very very greenary. One will see lots of fish farming being done here. One can sail around the lake in shikara or houseboat. Lovely place to see.

Ashtamudi Lake, in the Kollam District of the Indian state of Kerala, is the most visited backwater and lake in the state. It possesses a unique wetland ecosystem and a large palm-shaped water body, mangroves, Kallada river. 🏠 Boat arrangements and near by you have #jatayuearthcenter #Varkala You will get to see birds and the scenic beauty on the boat drive is mesmerizing. The Twilight sunrise is an visual treat.

We visited Ashthamudi lake in Oct 2022 for houseboating. The lake is the biggest lake in Kerala and has a few islands too. Prawns and Karimeen farming is quite prominent on the lake and also tourism with houseboats and shikara boats. There are multiple bridge over the lake for both rail and roadways.

The incredible beauty of Kerala, Ashtamudi Lake, it’s name has been derived from two words 'Ashta' meaning eight and 'Mudi' meaning branch, thereby stating the fact that lake has eight branches. It’s the second largest lake in Kerala. Thick coconut groves and palm trees can be seen all along the banks of the lake. The banks of the lake are also famous for the Chinese fishing nets. Backwater cruises are also available in the lake, between Kollam and Alappuzha. The boat cruise to Munroe Islands is a wonderful experience. There are many resorts along the lake that offer variety of water sports.

This lake is the most visited lake and backwater in the state. Lush green waterways lined with palm and coconut trees, there’s no better place to start exploring Kollam that is considered to be one of the best Kollam tourist places. Ashtamudi means ‘Eight Coned’ in Malayalam. A houseboat trip to this lake is among the most popular things to do in Kollam.

Visited on 28 dec.2020 One of the jewels of God's own country. The place is less mentioned in travel blogs etc. We were told about this place by a casual acquaintance friend at varkala and we decided to visit. The friend was kind enough to book a room at club mahindra. After visiting almost whole of kerala, we would've really missed this beautiful, awsome, serene, silent place called ashtamudi. The lake comprises of eight lake islands. Opening to the sea. The beautiful lake cannot be enjoyed without a Canoe boat ride in the small canals .we went for This Canoe riding from munroth Island. We went in for early morning Canoe ride at 6.00 am.its 45 minutes from hotel by car. 5 stars for the roads of kerala. Even the small single lane roads ĺeading to the canals in manroth islands were fantastic. The ride cannot be fully explained. Awsome, beautiful, mesmerizing, fantastic etc nothing more to say about this place. With the early morning ride at dawn,The small canals winding through houses on both side were to be enjoyed. You can't compare this Canoe riding to the boat house rides in alleppy. This place, the canals. The canal side houses. The pathways, roads alongside the canals is once in lifetime experience. And the vast lake are really mesmerizing. The fun and most enjoyable will be that you will have to bend your whole body when you come across small bridges along the canals. At one point we were made to sit on the floor of the canal. WOW Its near kollam. There are many homestays in manroth island who have their own Canoes. They are opening up after unlock. If you want a life time beautiful experience you should plan for a Canoe ride in the canals of ashtamudi. And that should be early morning ride before sunrise. The club mahindra has speed boat ride into the lake which will be a normal boat ride..but Canoe ride is bliss.

Great place to make tourist attractions. But proof of the government's worst planning. At least the government can propose programs for native people to start tourism projects. But still natives will be scared of corruption and politics while starting projects.

Scenic backwater spread across kollam. Must visit this place in the evening or early morning. The nearby area can be really exciting if you are an avid bird watcher. A variety of migratory birds can be seen throughout the area. The lake has a palm shape and is considered as the gateway to backwaters in Kerala. I think it is the second biggest backwater after Vembanad. The name ashtamudi actually means 'eight hair braids'. Several resorts can be seen nearby. It is also an ecologically important place as it is conserved by the Ramsar convention.

There are several points where we can access the lake since there are many townships and villages on the banks of the lake. The multiple branches of the lake includes rivers and backwaters and the coconut plantations, small villages, Chinese fishing nets etc on the banks apart from the resorts, boating in the lake, fishing and other activities have made Ashtamudi Lake one of the most sought after tourist destination of Kerala. The boat ride in the still clear backwaters is ideal for for those who wish to see and enjoy the island life🤩🏝️

Ashtamudi means 'eight braids' (Ashta : 'eight'; mudi : 'hair braids') in the local Malayalam language. The name is indicative of the lake's topography with its multiple branches. The lake is also called the gateway to the backwaters of Kerala and is well known for its houseboat and backwater resorts. Ashtamudi's eight faces are Thevally Lake, Kandachira Lake, Kureepuzha Lake, Thekkumbhagam Lake, Kallada Lake, Perumon Lake, Kumbalathu Lake and Kanjirottu Lake. The beauty and tranquillity of Ashtamudi Lake will never disappoint. If there's anything that can compete with the backwaters experience is the sunset over the lake. They are simply enchanting.

It's a very serene place! We were welcomed by one of the boating services, I think the person in charge was Roshan. Usually if you contact through your local driver, you can easily get in touch with some great and reliable boating agents. They gave us a 1 hour tour and we really enjoyed the ride. It was a manually rowed boat. They took us through canopies and alongside mangroves. You can think of this place as a less crowded version of Alleppey backwaters honestly. Since we were visiting from Trivandrum, we found this closer as compared to Alleppey, hence the choice.

Good tourist attraction if you take a ride in the boathouse. However, this fades in comparison to the boathouse scenic rides of Alapuzha. The key attraction here is the Sambranipodi island and the tiny mangroves for some memorable photo shoots
