There are so few local bookshops like this left, drowned out by Amazon and Booktopia and Kmart and Big W, and that's a crying shame. The bookshops with that sweet smell of crisp, fresh paper as soon as you walk in. The ones with staff who scan your purchase and excitedly say "Oh I've read this, it was fantastic! If you like this, you should try..." The ones where you can vaguely ask for a recommendation, explaining yourself poorly because you don't totally know what you want, and yet you'll go away with a book that inexplicably hits the spot. A bookshop that supports local book clubs with a discount for members and will order in multiple copies of next month's book, enough for everyone. A bookshop whose staff say "oh sorry I just sold the last one, but I'll order it in for you and keep it aside for you when it comes." A bookshop that proudly promotes its local authors, and regularly hosts book signings and author talks. The Bookshop in Darwin is one such bookshop. The selection of books is perfectly curated, the staff genuinely love books and love talking to you about books. Please buy your books here rather than Kmart and Big W - we need bookshops like this in our town, and in the world.

There was one staff member who was extremely kind and helpful. I wanted to see if they had the second Artemis fowl book, and although they didn’t, he suggested I buy Percy jackson instead. He said he had read both Artemis fowl and Percy Jackson and they were similar. Since then, I have read the whole Percy Jackson series, heroes of Olympus and I am now onto the Kane chronicles. The best book store I have been to :)
