Its construction started in July 1907 and lasted 1.5 years and the plans belonged to the architect Vitaliano Posseli. It was built by order of Edmond Allatini and sold to Alfredo Allatini as soon as it was completed. It was founded on the site of the garden on the south side of the Allatini mansion, to house the Bank of Thessaloniki, which the wealthy Jewish family had founded in 1888. The great fire of 1917, she caused damage to the building and in fact her traces are still visible in the vault of the basement, in the large metal door that sealed it. It soon changed its use and housed shops and professionals. During the occupation it was commandeered by the Nazis and closed. In the 1950s, the gallery reopened and hosted the Bank of Chios until 1954. Later added to this was the inner, rectangular building located right in the middle of the building. In 1954 it was bought by the Voreopoulos family, to which it still belongs today, and was renamed Stoa Malakopi, due to the family's origin from the place. It was classified as a preserved building in 1983. On its facade, the clock has stopped at 11.06, the time of the great earthquake of Thessaloniki in 1978. Today it is used by catering and entertainment shops, but a large part of it remains abandoned and unused.

You can't spend the evenings. In the mornings everything looks completely different and calm. Where is all this happening? But of course in Valaoritou and the surrounding area. You must have noticed an original and beautiful building that dominates the Stock Exchange Square. Its characteristic is the large clock that adorns its face. This is the Malakopi gallery. The building, the center of the ramparts of Ottoman Thessaloniki, was built in 1906 to the designs of the Italian architect Vitaliano Pozelli and housed the Bank of Thessaloniki, founded in 1888 by the Allatini family. The building was owned by Eduardos Allatini (a member of a Jewish family known for its economic activity) who bought it in the period between 1904-1906. In 1904 in the northern part of the edifice there was a single building with a garden extending to the south. In 1906, the gallery was built on the spot where the garden was located, in order to house various shops and also the Bank of Thessaloniki. The latter, founded by the Allatini brothers in 1888, opened its doors in Malakopi arcade in 1907, when bank manager Alfredo Misrahi bought the building on behalf of the bank. The architect of the Bank of Thessaloniki was Vitaliano Pozelli, to whom Thessaloniki owes some of the most impressive buildings of the late Ottoman period. The fire of 1917, which destroyed most of the city center for 3 days, burned almost the entire barracks, but Pozelli's building remained intact. However, it did not escape the final closure in 1940, when it was ordered by the Nazis. In 1978 the clock in the center of the front gable stopped working at the time of the great earthquake of Thessaloniki, showing 11:05.

The clock that stopped at the time of the Thessaloniki earthquake in 1978. The Stoa Malakopi was built in 1906 by the architect Vitaliano Pozelli to house the Bank of Thessaloniki. It is built in the garden of the mansion of the Allatini family and was characterized for years by the large banks that flourished in the area. Today it is used as a meeting place.

Malakopi portico built (1907) Vitaliano Posseli by order of Edmond Allatini and sold to Alfredo Allatini. It is located in the area of the former fragomahala on the south side of the garden of the Alatini mansion, its purpose was to house the Bank of Thessaloniki (1888) A two-story, rectangular building with a glass-roofed space in the central area of the building remained empty and lit by the large atrium. Initially the entrance was located on the central axis defined by the clock and the baroque pediment, then (1954) the entrance was moved to the right of the axis, the building is perfectly symmetrical with respect to the vertical axis, with a difference in the central openings of the first floor which served to emphasize the entrance even more. The central staircase, leads to the floor, the offices of the employees, north side a smaller staircase leads to the basement, where the treasury was located, on the floor there are internal openings for sufficient lighting of the offices through the atrium. The great fire of (1917) caused damage to the building and in fact its traces are still visible in the treasury during the occupation (1940) it was ordered by the Nazis and closed., (1950 -54) the portico reopened and housed up to the Bank Chios. Later added to this was the inner, rectangular building located right in the middle of the building. The Voreopoulos family bought it (1954) to which it belongs until today and was renamed Stoa Malakopi, due to the origin of the family from the place, it was classified as preserved (1983) *the clock on the south gable stopped on June 20, 1978 exactly at the time of the great earthquake

I visited the building through the architectural tours of Open House Thessaloniki 2022. Both the ownership of the building and the co-located businesses respect the space and maintain it as best as possible
