You
can't
spend
the
evenings.
In
the
mornings
everything
looks
completely
different
and
calm.
Where
is
all
this
happening?
But
of
course
in
Valaoritou
and
the
surrounding
area.
You
must
have
noticed
an
original
and
beautiful
building
that
dominates
the
Stock
Exchange
Square.
Its
characteristic
is
the
large
clock
that
adorns
its
face.
This
is
the
Malakopi
gallery.
The
building,
the
center
of
the
ramparts
of
Ottoman
Thessaloniki,
was
built
in
1906
to
the
designs
of
the
Italian
architect
Vitaliano
Pozelli
and
housed
the
Bank
of
Thessaloniki,
founded
in
1888
by
the
Allatini
family.
The
building
was
owned
by
Eduardos
Allatini
(a
member
of
a
Jewish
family
known
for
its
economic
activity)
who
bought
it
in
the
period
between
1904-1906.
In
1904
in
the
northern
part
of
the
edifice
there
was
a
single
building
with
a
garden
extending
to
the
south.
In
1906,
the
gallery
was
built
on
the
spot
where
the
garden
was
located,
in
order
to
house
various
shops
and
also
the
Bank
of
Thessaloniki.
The
latter,
founded
by
the
Allatini
brothers
in
1888,
opened
its
doors
in
Malakopi
arcade
in
1907,
when
bank
manager
Alfredo
Misrahi
bought
the
building
on
behalf
of
the
bank.

was
Vitaliano
Pozelli,
to
whom
Thessaloniki
owes
some
of
the
most
impressive
buildings
of
the
late
Ottoman
period.
The
fire
of
1917,
which
destroyed
most
of
the
city
center
for
3
days,
burned
almost
the
entire
barracks,
but
Pozelli's
building
remained
intact.
However,
it
did
not
escape
the
final
closure
in
1940,
when
it
was
ordered
by
the
Nazis.
In
1978
the
clock
in
the
center
of
the
front
gable
stopped
working
at
the
time
of
the
great
earthquake
of
Thessaloniki,
showing
11:05.
