There is so much history here and it was great to take the tour and see everything from a higher view. There is a small fee when you enter when your a tourist, only a few euros. Be prepared with the right shoes to walk around and take great pictures and videos. It’s worth the trip!

If you want to enter, they are not 24 hours! Closed at five pm today when I went. Cost was six euros. The construction still takes up half of the monument, which is okay and understandable, however a price reduction for entrance would have been preferred. Because of the construction, the offices were moved to another floor of the museum so only half was available to walk through. Photos attached of my view through the bars of the locked second-level door. It seemed like the Heptapyrgion was 1/2 construction, 1/4 staff only/restricted, and barely 1/4 of historical content for visitors. I’d rate this a ‘visit if you can but don’t fret too much about missing it’ experience for now, at least until the end of the construction. The staff was very, very kind, informative, and welcoming. It would be 5/5 if it wasn’t for the construction (but I understand it’s importance and respect the fact that this historical monument is being cared for and improved) and the lack of a reduced admissions price. May the construction finish soon!

We've visited just before covid started to spread. The outside is beautiful, but it's really worth it to pay that few euros to enter the castle. It was off season when we traveled, and the place was empty at first and they even opened the place earlier for us. The views from the top is amazing, but be advised that the stairs can be difficult to climb for people with disabillities. For more information, go to my post - "what to do in Thessaloniki - con delight" on my blog.

It takes some climbing to go up to the fortress but it is worth it, you can get to see the beautiful city of Thessaloniki. Though do not try to visit the castle on Tuesday because it is closed.

The Heptapyrgion - Byzantine and Ottoman-era fortress. It is in the north-eastern corner of the Acropolis of Thessaloniki in Greece. The urban core of the city essentially dates from its foundation by Cassander in 316 BC. the walls that defined the medieval and early modern city, and that are still visible today, date to the late Antiquity, when the Roman emperor Theodosius I (r. 379–395) fortified the city anew.

A gorgeous site overlooking the city but what a waste of potential. Filled with trash in the immediate surroundings with careless staff, the expensive ticket gives you acess to barely one panorama platform. The citadel is a historical gem in itself but the visitor is offered not a SINGLE explanation about the place that is solely falling apart. Very sad to see. I hope funds will be allocated to renovate it asap.

The views are really awesome. The entrance fee after the season ends in Thessaloniki is half the price as it could be until 1 October. This "castle" was a prison in the late century, it has a history written inside a chamber where you can see the evolution and the store of one inmate. The place gives you the insight of how people lived there. It's only one hour walk from the center of Thessaloniki, go by foot, you will find more beautiful places on the way .

(Translated by Google) It is more than a Byzantine monument, since it functioned as a prison until 1989. In this area, important events have been written that seal the modern history of the country on a political and social level. Large forms of letters were imprisoned in the darkness and dampness of the isolated cells of Genti Koule such as Chronis Missios.

Heptapyrgion, also known as the Yedi Kule, is a historic fortress located in Thessaloniki that offers a glimpse into the city's rich past. Perched atop a hill, the fortress provides panoramic views of Thessaloniki and the surrounding landscape, making it a popular destination for both history enthusiasts and those seeking breathtaking vistas. Huge recommending during your visit in Thessaloniki 👌🏻

If there is a concert there, go watch it. The place transforms to something magical. The acoustics are good, the environment is great, the temperature in summer isn’t too hot at evenings.

Beautiful view of the city and gulf. Unfortunately, on site there is very limited information about the history of the place, which is really a pitty. So do your homework in advance. There is also a lot of dirt around.

Situated near Agora, the old medieval fortress, Eptapyrgion means the Fortress of the Seven Towers, as seen in the mock-up photo. Haven, defense fortress, garrison headquarters, prison until 1989, these were her destinations in the past. Its construction is not precisely dated, differing between the years 300s and the 9th century. What is certain is that it was an important point of the fortifications of the city during the Byzantine period, and above the entrance is recorded the year 1431 as the year when it was captured by the Turks. All the vicissitudes of history have added the destruction caused by the earthquake of 1978. It is allowed to visit inside, but only certain pavilions.

Edy Kulѐ or Eptapirgio (Seven Towers) is a medieval fortress with towers in the northeastern part of Thessaloniki. Despite its name, the fortress has ten towers. The fortress was built in the IX century, and some parts of it were built later. Like the White Tower, it was used as a prison from the late 19th century to 1978. Lots of history and beauty in one place, worth a look!

UNESCO heritage site with more than 1000 years of story. The freshest & most recent story of the Yedi Kule (Turkish name) is a gruesome prison. But the 7 Towers (really there are 10 but they didn't want to overshadow the Istanbul fortress of the same name). This fortress within a fortress was constructed in the late Byzantine era and it's shocking to see the reuse of marble pieces in the walls. It's the castle on top of the acropolis, located near a water source from the nearby mountain. It's pretty stunning on many levels but it really takes a good guide to help unpack the historical layers.

The main defence tower of the Byzantine fortifications walls of Thessaloniki, became the ground of a later prison. Fresh memories (it closed its doors some 30 years ago) in recent greek history, as a terrible place for penal as well as political prisoners. Gedikoule (turkish name of 7 towers) still remains in greek the expression of suffering.

An old fort that now holds an old unused prison inside. It's worth the visit as long as you are already up there for other parts such as the tower of the prison. But as a standalone site is a little average. Not much to see. It's not in a good condition and there is no additional info around the site. The prison seems to be the main attraction. The path to it is a bit harsh in a hot summer.

Great place to have a stunning view over Thessaloniki. A lot of history there as well, from byzantine times all the way to its recent usage as a prison. Make sure to come in the evening and enjoy a beverage of your choice watching the sunset. Highlight: The view! Lowlight: The place is quite hard to reach by foot as it's located on a hill. Bus connections exist, but timetables in Greece are only a recommendation ;)

Well worth a visit, especially if you visit the exhibition at the white tower first which is in the town, which further puts the past of castle into context. Castle is impressive with commanding views of Thessaloniki, only part of castle is accessible to the public, including the cell block used more recently for political prisoners. There are also further ruined towers and walls in the surrounding area which truly demonstrate how extensive this castle must of been in earlier times.
