Islahane was founded in 1874 as the first orphanage-technical school of Thessaloniki, independent of religion. He provided orphans for 5 years with the learning of Arts such as carpentry, shoemaking, tailoring and printing. Today one of the three original buildings survives and functions as a museum. Areti's narration and guided tour of the museum takes you back to another era. In the museum there are many objects, tools and machines that were used for the arts of metal and fire. This place is just amazing.Certainly worth visiting of you are a tourist in Thessaloniki. It was been recently renovated , just like the sunny park outside. It is a museum dedicated to the history of the building and the area in general. There is also an exhibition about a writer (Antonis Sourounis) of the neighborhood. On top of that it has a very good video projection on this topic. Entrance is free .The only downside is it's working hours. The staff were extremely friendly and nice. Full of knowledge about the place and also Ottoman history.
