Very old temple of Kanchipuram with deity of Shiva inside. There is a mango tree in the temple area which is said to be around 3000 or more years old and still alive and bearing fruit which we missed unknowingly. A great temple to visit

Another superb example of ancient architecture. I liked the 1000 pillars corridor and main entrance whose height is almost 11 floors. It's an old Shiva temple and Nandi.

Beautiful place. Very calm and as per locals it's a powerful place. There is no entry ticket for this temple. But people there will ask you money and will tell you for separate vip darshan which I think can be avoided if you are okay to stand in queue for 30min - 1hour during rush hours. Ancient architecture works with many religious things like old mango tree, pillars with beautiful carvings can be experienced at this place. If you are near the town then this is a must visit place. Finding parking can be a little difficult during rush hours. Overall you can spend quality time with family here.

Ekambaranathar temple is one of the pancha bootha (for land) temple of lord shiva. Pancha bootha temples are air (kalahasti), water (trichy jambukeswar), fire (ARUNACHALESWAR), sky (Chidambaram natarajar), land (Kanchi Ekambaranathar). This temple is almost 4000 years old with spacious divine environment. Here Lingam is made of sand. In this temple Kanchi Kamatchi Amman had done tapas (Thavam) to marry lord shiva so this temple is considered as one of the famous parikara sthalam ( for the people who didn’t get married and without child). We can see 3500 year old mango tree here, where special prayers are done. This temple is one of the 108 divya desam of lord venkateswara (perumal).Very pleasant place, stress buster. Inside temple thiru kulam (holy pond) is present, the chill breeze from it and the positive vibe of the temple will make our mind refreshing. Everyone must visit this temple atleast once in your life to feel the eternity. It is present at the centre of Kanchipuram city. Ample parking space is available. AVOID PLASTIC, SAVE NATURE, ENJOY THE DIVINITY. Om Namah Shivaya. HAPPY DEVOTION. 🙏

The temple is one of the best masterpiece from our ancestors, but I am worried how good we are going to protect in future. I have seen many Tamil words carved on many rocks (floor) which is stepped by 1000-10000 PPL per day. I wish those can be decoded asap before it gets completely erased due to deformation.

It's really awesome, huge and beautiful temple. Temple architecture is mind blowing. Thanks to our great Chola and Vijayanagar and other empires who contributed to this temple building activities. One can spend a couple of hours in this serene temple complex.

Shiva is worshiped as Ekambareswarar or Ekambaranathar or Rajlingeswaram, and is represented by the lingam, with his idol referred to as Prithvi lingam. His consort Parvati is depicted as Elavarkuzhali. The presiding deity is revered in the 7th century Tamil Saiva canonical work, the Tevaram, written by Tamil saint poets known as the nayanars and classified as Paadal Petra Sthalam. The temple also houses Nilathingal Thundam Perumal temple, a Divyadesam, the 108 temples revered in the Vaishnava canon Nalayira Divya Prabhandam. The temple complex covers 10 hectares (25 acres), and is one of the largest in India. It houses four gateway towers known as gopurams. The tallest is the southern tower, with 11 stories and a height of 58.5216 m (192 ft), making it one of the tallest temple towers in India. The temple has numerous shrines, with those of Ekambareswarar and Nilathingal Thundam Perumal being the most prominent. The temple complex houses many halls; the most notable is the thousand-pillared hall built during the Vijayanagar period. The temple has six daily rituals at various times from 3:30~4:00 a.m. to 10 p.m., and twelve yearly festivals on its calendar. Panguni Uthiram festival celebrated for thirteen days during the Tamil month of Panguni (March - April) is the most prominent festival of the temple and the town. The present masonry structure was built during the Chola dynasty in the 9th century, while later expansions are attributed to Vijayanagar rulers. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu. The temple is the largest and one of the most prominent tourist attractions in the city

One among the pancha bhoota lingas, la located in the temple city of kanchipuram, shiva kanchi is an example of magnificent architecture of temples of Tamil Nadu The temple is beautifully carved with a very big Raja gopuram at entrance and with vast pillars halls, one four sides of the garbhalaya, resembling the kalahasti. Almost all the five pancha bhoota linga, viz, kalahasti, arunachalam, chidambaram, kanchipuram and jambukeshwaram are equally big, beautiful and sacred. The specialist here is the shiva linga was made with mud by the divine mother matha Parvati herlself under a mango tree which is still there. A sacred water pond on the left side of gharbalaya with a big Namdeeshwara in front are the special attractions. The temple timings are morning 6 to 12.30 and evening 4 to 8.30...

Temple is absolutely great. It's a very ancient and good looking temple. But foreigners are not allowed into the temple as rule of traditions. It has a complete rush that you can't stand as solitary. Except That the temple is great

After a quick visit of temples in a row, found this temple very spacious with lesser crowd. The darshan queue was shorter and much more relaxed. An excellent place to stop by and appreciate the temple sculpture. A step well pond beside the temple adds to the charm. But like most temple ponds, this one too only offers an external view Purchased some unique prasadams like Kancheepuram idli, sweet rice etc.

Ekamabareshwara is one of the oldest Lord Shiva Shrine in Kanchipuram, representing "Earth Element" among the Five vital elements as Panchtatva inherits in our body to run smoothly as per Yogasutra. Maa Gauri had made here ShivaLinga with Sand n despite all odds Won the heart of Lord Shiva and got married. The sacred Mango trees in the courtyard is 3500yrs old n represented as Sakshi for Lord Shiva n Parvati reunion and a significant temple under the sacred tree. Among 5 elements as Earth, Water, Fire Air n sky/ether, Earth as Ekambaranathar n Sky as Natrajan Thillai has Vishnu/ Narayan idol inside n worshipped! Rest of 3 elements hast Shiva linga n Parvati only. It's a great cultural, valuable n holistic shrine n sitting here give utmost, peace, satisfaction n bonded connection with valuable earth. Earth element carries a very imp vital part of valuable life which inherits the lowest part of body as Muladhar and our life starts from Earth as born, fed by Earth as Annapurna n ends at earth only. I highly recommend visiting during mid oct n Nov and enjoying the weather as well as the culturally rich Kanchipuram with spiritual connect n their luxurious silk.

This temple is located 2km away from the Kanchipuram bus stand. It is one of the biggest temples in Kanchipuram which covers an area of 40 Acres.I was stunned at the complex of a large temple with big Nandi at the front and hundreds of lingas installed by various sages who lived there centuries back. If you are visiting kanchipuram, this is a must visit.

The temple is well built but the main problem is its poor maintenance. I couldn't see any guards at all, since it is a famous tourist place for foreigners as well, they are supposed to keep at least minimum security facilities.

Ekambaranathar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the deity Shiva, located in the town of Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu, India. A must visit temple when you visit Kanchipuram, very vast temple complex with amazing sculptures. The 3000+ years old mango tree is a pleasant visual treat along with the other sculptures. Temple is well maintained and I happen to meet one of the manager part of Hindu Department Temples (ஹிந்து அறநிலைய துறை) and he was very helpful and helped get around the temple with ease without any expectations. If you are interested in Hindu history and architecture marvels then plan to spend at least 2 to 3 hours to go around and explore all the marvels in details.

(Visited in February 2021) Ekambaranathar temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva is the largest Saiva temple in Kanchi. Mythologically it is one of the pancha bhootha Saiva sthalams (Earth element), associated with the legend of Goddess Kamakshi performing a penance for Lord Shiva under a mango tree (also on temple premises). The ambiance of the temple is awesome.

Temple main door closed for renovation when I visited in October 2023. We have to enter from side. There is a big painting of Parvati Devi protecting Shiva lingam from flood which is the sthala puranam. Shiva lingam is of conical top and Shiva, Parvati and Skanda statues are there in the back. It is called prithvi lingam. There is 3500 old tree on display to the left when entering the temple. There is also new mango tree with Shiva, Parvathi idols under it. Murugan is also seen in this idol Parvati looking at him. There are 108 siva lingas inside garbhagudi on the pradakshina path. There are many large Siva lingas outside. There is a big nandi statue outside the temple towards other end. Beautiful temple to visit.

Visiting the Ekambareswarar Temple was a captivating experience that left me in awe of its rich history and architectural grandeur. Nestled in the heart of Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, this ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is not just a place of worship but a living testament to the artistic and cultural brilliance of the past. As I entered the temple complex, the sheer scale of the sprawling architecture overwhelmed me. The massive gopurams (entrance towers) adorned with intricate sculptures and vibrant colors welcomed me into a sacred realm. The thousand-pillared hall stood as a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship of the artisans who carved each pillar with precision. The main sanctum, dedicated to Lord Shiva, housed a mesmerizing lingam, emanating a palpable spiritual energy. The temple's sacred pond, known as 'Sivaganga,' added a tranquil touch to the ambiance. The ancient mango tree within the complex, believed to be several centuries old, added a mystical charm to the surroundings. The temple's history, dating back over a millennium, unfolded through inscriptions and sculptures, narrating tales of dynasties and devotion. Exploring the various shrines and mandapams, each with its unique architectural style and significance, was like stepping back in time.

One among the “Pancha Bhoota Stalam” [five Shiva temples each representing five elements of life], Ekambareswarar Temple is one of the most sacred Shiva temples. It represents the element Earth. Shiva is worshipped as Ekambareswarar. The temple is thousands of years old with the current structure being a reconstructed one, around 600 AD by the Pallavas. However the temple displays the works of likely every dynasty that ruled Kanchipuram. The 172 feet Raja Gopuram is a marvelous piece of architectural wonder built by the Vijayanagara Empire. The Cholas made architectural contributions to the temple too. Legend has it that the lingam here at the Ekambareswarar Temple is made and worshipped by Goddess Parvati herself and that we can still see a mark on the Lingam which holds this legend true. Once Goddess Parvati covered Shiva’s eyes and the world suddenly filled with darkness. With Shiva’s eyes closed, the Sun and Moon darkened without even a beam of light. He opened his third eye and saved the day for the mankind. Parvati was filled with guilt after witnessing all these. Shiva asked her to do penance to free her from wrong karma. Parvati born on earth as Kamakshi and started her penance. She made a Shiva linga out of sand and worshipped Lord Shiva in the form of Prithvi Lingam [Lingam made of earth] under an ancient temple mango tree. At the same time, Shiva in order to test her devotion caused a flood where Kamakshi was busy worshipping him. Kamakshi on realizing about the flood got scared of the Prithvi Lingam being washed off, embraces the lingam. Lord Shiva who literally started melting due to her devotion and love appears in his materialized human form and married Kamakshi. Also this is when Kamakshi accidently left some marks on the lingam as a result of her bangles and kuchas hitting the sand made lingam which can be seen even today. The “Sthala Vriksham” or the ancient temple mango tree is more than 3500 years old under which Kamakshi worshipped the Shiv Lingam is still present here and is one of the significant landmarks of the temple. It has four branches and each represents one of the four Vedic texts and yield four different flavors of fruits. The other significant features of the temple include the “Aayiram Kaal Mandapam” or the 1000 pillared hall, 1008 Shiv Lingams that adorn the inner walls of the temple and the ten musical pillars at the inner corridor of the temple. Another architectural brilliance is that the sun rays falls directly on the Shiva linga every 19, 20 and 21 of the Panguni month (March-April) which is hen the most important festival of the Ekambareswarar Temple is celebrated, the Panguni Uthiram.
