This is a must visit place if you are traveling to Trivandrum. This is an attraction for all age groups from kids to senior citizens. The highlights of the place is the sight of the water flowing from the dam structure. The sight and sound of it calms you. There are multiple parks inside which are neatly maintained. There are lawns all over with shady benches to relax and enjoy the nature. The steps take you to the top of the dam. There is a watch tower at the top which gives a great 360 degree view. There is a KTDC restaurant at the top. The service is great and food is good. The rates are nominal. The view is again great from this restaurant. There were lions maintained in a Lion Safari earlier. But these are closed now. Was informed that the lions died of ailments. Cars can be parked safely under shade. You can spend more than half a day here with friends and family enjoying the view of the dam, reservoir, lawns and forests around.

One of the beautiful spot to visit near Thiruvananthapuram. It is 30 km away from main city. People could reach there through road. Some time direct bus to Neyyar Dam may not available from Thiruvanathapuram (Thampanoor ) bus stand. But enough number of Kattakada Bus available, from there travellers could get connection bus. Well organized garden is available, safari park, boating, watch tower are near by. This place is recommended for a weekend hanging out with your family.

A good(but not great) place to spend an evening with your family.Well there's nothing much to see and explore view of the dam and the catchment area is spectacular. There's small garden around the areas of the dam but it's not that big. There's is a Ktdc beer parlour and hotel nearby the dam . If you want to stay for an evening you may stay there. Also boating is available. There was lion safari available but now it's closed due to death of the lions. There is also a alligator farm nearby the dam. Apart from that nothing much to see and explore.

The Lions are dead so safari is not happening. Boat ride and staff are good. 3 people speed boat ₹750+ 15 per head for so called reserve forest. Entry not allowed but they collect anyway. Climb to the top from down is not for the weak or elderly #750 for 20 minutes boat ride in safari boat for 6 people 30 minutes for ₹1100. These also ₹15 / person for entry to reserve they charge.

The enormous structure of the dam will leave you in awe. The parks adjacent to it provides a peaceful experience. The best part that I liked was the various kinds of boating. Out if which my favorite was wildlife boating where we were taken through the twists and turns of the water to the "wildlife preservation centre" which is a nature retreat in itself and one worth visiting. You can bring your family or friends and have a nice day here within a budget. Also there's a swimming pool if you're interested

Dam is beautiful. maybe due to covid very less people's are visiting daily. bike parking 10 rs, entry fee 10 rs ..gardens are not maintaining properly. boat ride was there . govt should focus more on garden, more activities inside dam area like light and sound program, etc..

"A photographic spot" Pleasant to spend a time with family in the evening . If its a rainy climate that's a scenic view for everyone💚💙 There is a wildlife boating adjacent to it..we where taken to the wildlife park by boat . While looking from boat the wildlife park which is surrounded by water seems like a mini islands.. kids will enjoy it..worth it. Parking facilities, shops for water and snacks are available.. There is a swimming pool available inside for a hourly price.

This dam offers an absolutely breathtaking view. You can either park your car and climb up or drive up. I'm told it's quite the climb, so be ready for that commitment if you were to climb up. They have various boat and speed boat rides. The ride was nice and offered amazing view. There's also a building structure on the top which you can climb on to of (like a lighthouse) and enjoy the view up top. There's a small entry fee and the rides are decently priced. A little further away is an elephant training camp, deer park etc. The elephant camp has "kotta vanji" or coracle boat ride, which seemed more appealing as there wouldn't be the noise from the motor in the street boat, we did not try this though. There's a milma ice cream place for an ice cream break.

Beautiful scenery. Now the wild life sanctuary is not functioning. We can go boating with a people of 10. We can have a walk over the dam. Apart from that nothing else, as Lion and Crocodile parks are not functioning now.

It's a beautiful place to explore the nature. The scenarios are very beautiful as I shared the above pictures, neyyar dam includes lion safari parks which is the 1st lion safari park in Asia but now there is no lion or that park. I think for better tourism reopening of the park is a better solution and include more activities for tourists

Entry ticket ₹15 per head, and offering huge parking outside the entrance it's also included on that 15 bucks , the same is quite old mesmerized with the natural beauty of the surrounding, overall it's a perfect add on place to your main trip.espcialy you can visit as a picnic area. They also offer ( with extra cost) lion Safari (currently no lion is there- 08-02-2024) Boat riding ( 300-500 per pax) And the so-called reserved forest.

Avoidable, the boat ride was nice and calming, but you would need to use used life jackets. We sanitized and used them. They could just promote this place a nice quiet boating destination. The animal "SAFARI" is a joke and pathetic. Amazing how govt agencies can get away with such facilities.

The NEYYAR DAM and its environs are yet another misused or underused asset of the tourism department of the state. The setting is so beautiful that it could’ve been lifted up to international standards and earned the badge of the UN or so. But for now it is just an ill-mainitianed park that brinks at the verge of destruction. Although the management is trying its best to protect and introduce more activities, the place still lacks the efficient leadership that would spearhead the delicate balance of the beauty bestowed on the place. The dam premises consises of the long and dull walkaway on top of the dam, the dilapidated children’s park with all the tattered equipments, the leisure parks which has no shading at all, An aquarium that seems to have fishes that are half-dead, a lot of abandoned buildings in the campus which seems to be haunted, the swimming pool which is always under maintenance, the cafeterias that serves nothing and the interpretation center which does not interpret anything. The style of construction within the campus is totally against what one would consider as vernacular. It is a sure-fire eye-sore. All in all, the place is a failure in terms of its potential and has not even expored the tip of the iceberg.

Place is good for a day trip /picnic with kids/family as well as elderly persons. Do visit Kottur(elephant camp) in morning first before visiting dam. We did our boating in Kottur camp as well as Dam at both places, but I would advise to save it for Nayaar Dam. At Nayyar dam, climb the viewpoint tower for catching a good panoramic view of Dam/backwaters. I would advise to visit Crocodile park/deer Park, it's on island and you need to visit by Boat. This will be your boating opportunity as well. There is separate "boating only" option, but I would not advise that. Note- "Boating only" option, which is inside the dam campus, I could sense some sort of corruption, but I am not sure. They charged us 140 INR for adults and for kids above 5 years half ticket(50 INR). We were not given the tickets/receipts, although money was taken from us. We were told to directly approach boat ramp, and counter cashier person(one lady) told us she will directly give ticket to attender at ramp. I didn't suspect anything till then, and later realised that, we might have been overcharged and so, tickets were not handed over to us, but directly to boat attender on ramp. We went on Tuesday, and so, may be due to less rush, there might have been some attempted corruption by employees there.

Dam was good, but tourism department doesn't seems to be concerned to attract domestic or international tourists to this place. Another reason could be covid-19 as well. I was imagining that if this place was at tamilnadu, they would have made it a popular tourist destination.

Good place to visit with kids. The dam view is outstanding. Beyond that there are parks, sculptures and other beautiful sceneries. I think Lion Safari Park is not working nowadays. There is an Aquarium and Crocodile park. There is a tower in the extreme end of the dam and view of the dam from the tower is good.

The dam is a beautiful sight to watch during the night. There are lots of sights to watch and it's going to be a long walk. I wouldn't recommend eating anything from the stalls as all the food is cold. It is a good place to chill out. You would require an hour to see the whole place.

Nice ambience. Boating service superb. Many crocodiles, two elephants and deers can be seen. Rainy season is the best to feel the real vibe of this place. Luckily we got rain during our boating time. Greenish water in the dam will cool your mind. Very helpful and friendly staffs are there. Animals are kept in cages not in natural environment( like in a zoo, not like in wildlife sanctuary). They are tried there best to keeping animals in their natural environment.

Thanks to the rains Dam was open, it was an unusual sight. We went there specifically for Lion Safari, but the official said it was closed down in 2020 and never opened. Only boating was available. It cost ₹250 per head ,but either boat should have 15 passengers or wait for 1 hour and only then the journey would start. We had to wait for around 40 minutes after taking tickets. One can also pay for private boat for ₹2500 per hour. But its not worth the money. The boat took us around Neyyar Dam, with 2 stops at Elephant park and Deer Rehabilitation center. Both of these centers can be visited by road as well.

A calm, scenic place, with a beautiful dam – a view that’s especially inviting for a camera if the skies are clear and the dam shutters are open. Once in, there is quite a bit to do here. We went for a boating – just the 5 of us in a boat meant for more folks – with stops at the Deer Park and the Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre. The Lion Safari was not open at that point since a few of the lionesses were undergoing medical support. The view from the watch tower is absolutely breath-taking if you're game to climb up all those stairs. A lovely half- to full-day trip from Thiruvananthapuram city.

Neyyar dam Neyyar dam a gravity dam on the Neyyar River in Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala, South India, located on the foot of the Western Ghats about 30 km from Thiruvananthapuram. It was established in 1958 and is a popular picnic spot. Lying against the southern low hills of the Western Ghats, Neyyar Dam has a scenic lake. Neyyar dam is situated at Kallikkad Panchayath of Neyyattinkara Taluk of Trivandrum district. The peak Agasthyakoodam is very near to Neyyar dam. The dam was built in the land given by an agriculturist known as Karuvachi Il Krishna Panicker, Maruthmmotil family, and his other family members for irrigation purposes. One canal of Neyyar flows to western districts of Tamil Nadu. The Neyyar Dam is a Rubble masonry gravity-type dam with a height of 56 m (184 ft) and length of 295 m (968 ft). Its structural volume is 105,000 m3 (3,708,040 cu ft). The dam creates a reservoir of 106,200,000 m3 (86,098 acre•ft) of which 101,000,000 m3 (81,882 acre•ft) is active (useful) capacity. The reservoir's surface area is 91 km2 (35 sq mi) and the dam's spillway has a 809.40 m3/s (28,584 cu ft/s) maximum discharge capacity. Wild life includes gaur, sloth bear, Nilgiri Tahr, jungle cat and Nilgiri langur, wild elephants and sambar deer. A crocodile farm was set up in 1977. It also includes a habitat for otters near the administrative complex. The Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre in Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary was named initially by the Kerala government after the late naturalist Steve Irwin as Steve Irwin National Park. A repository of some of the rarest medicinal herbs, the Neyyar Dam located about 32 km from Thiruvananthapuram. It is a popular picnic spot with a lake and a picturesque dam site. The lake formed by the dam across the Neyyar River is the bluest of blue, making boating irresistible for tourists. Photos by Viswas Menon © Viswas Menon Write up compiled by Viswas Menon

Couple of hours away from Thiruvananthapuram. Nice getaway for a days trip. Upon reaching, took the approach road towards deer park, drove through to lions safari entry only to be appraised that entry is via boat service which runs through the dams backwaters. Hence clicked done pictures and returned back to dams main entrance. Since we drove through the road adjoining the backwaters of the dam and hence didn't wanted to get a Dam entry to get the similar views. Took another fm road leading to the KTDC resort and got to view the beautiful views(catchment area) of the dam from a different perspective. It was time will spent. The visitor information can be added at certain places around this place. This place is also very close to Sivananda yoga Ashram.

Locals say that there are dangerous crocodiles inside the lake. But I was swimming many times here and stay alive till now. It is amazing to sit by lakeside. Very quiet and peaceful. There are many wild security guard due epidemic situation. They are more dangerous then crocodiles inside. If they saw you sitting alone on lakeside their duty is disturb and chase away you. Beware and avoid them.

An amazing place to spend quality time around 4 hours. Visiting this place during the winters made it even more amazing. The view from the boating is breathtaking. Felt the kion safari is a bit costly but sure can give it a try. There is a restaurant and a snacks bar for refreshments.

One of the dams in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Main purpose is for irrigation and is the major part of Neyyar Irrigation Project (NIP). Two canals are there for supplying water to agricultural fields. One canal is supplying water to Tamil Nadu. The garden in front of the dam is very beautiful and is an important tourist attraction. A watch tower is also available at the top of the dam. A children's park, is also available in the campus. Another attraction is an aquarium, which contains lot of fresh water fishes. The crocodile park is also very good. A Lion safari Park also available. Boating in the reservoir is also a very good experience.

NEYYAR DAM is built on the Neyyar river located in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. It is 30 kms away from the city central and located on the foot of Western ghats. The dam was established in the year of 1958. It is a gravity type dam with a height of approximately 184 ft and length of 968 ft. Its structural volume is 105,000 m3. The dam creates a reservoir of 106,200,000 m3 of which 101,000,000 m3 is active capacity. Avoid visiting the spot during afternoon since it will be exhaustive to walk around in Sun. Lion Safari Park, Boating, Deer park, Crocodile rehabilitation centre & research, Miniature wildlife sanctuary, Lake garden, Swimming pool, Watch tower, Elephant riding etc are the major attractions. Clean washrooms, safe parking and snacks shops are available in the premises. The ticket costs only ₹30 for 2 adults and bike park.

A good place to spend time with family, Artificially cerated garden here is very beautiful. Suitable place to trip with children. Road facility available to the top section of the dam.

Nice place to spend few hours. There is a watch tower, then walking on top of the dam, the garden below etc. Boating also available, but we didn't take this time. Also a mini crocodile park is there near the boating area. Lion safari is stopped.

Nice place to visit with family. You will be lucky if the shutters of the dam are open. Around the dam there are dear park, crocodile park, boating and lion safari park(no lions currently ). Check the rate with the staffs there before you do any activity. Could have make this place better.

A dam under irrigation departmetn with good park but lacks maintainance. If maintained properly, it is a nice location to attract tourists.

  • 4/5 Sangeetha A. 5 months ago on Google
Dam view is amazing.. However lack maintenance.. Surrounding of the dam is full of grass overgrown.. No proper wasterbin.. So waste is being thrown at here and there.. Park beneath the dam lack attraction.. Boating in the resorvoir is a must try.. You can enjoy the serinic beauty of neyyar forest area and Western Ghats while boating..

  • 3/5 Christine D. 8 months ago on Google
It was a good space for walking and just let the time pass. I wish it was maintained though, coz there were garbage in the garden near the cottages. Went here around 5pm and the view was nice. I didn't see any restaurant nearby.

Getting there is a bit tricky with the bad condition of roads. But the dam and surrounding areas are well maintained with a near garden and viewing area. Yet to try the safaris, but already such a wonderful experience.
