Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area in the Western Ghats, India, located in Kollam district of Kerala and comes under the control of Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve. It was established in 25 August 1984 and comprises 172.403 square kilometres (66.565 sq mi). The name is a corruption of the Chengurinji, a tree endemic to the region (Gluta travancorica). The sanctuary is having an artificial lake of nearly 18.69Sq.km size and also surrounded by the reservoir of Thenmala Dam. The Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary is a treasure house of plant diversity. About 1257 species of flowering plants belonging to more than 150 families are reported from this sanctuary of which 309 species are endemic to Western Ghats. Birds from 267 species including migratory, endemic and endangered species have been reported here. Tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forest cover a major area of the sanctuary. It has a presence of lion-tailed macaque, a highly endangered species. A brood of the highly elusive nocturnal forest bird, the Great Eared Nightjar was spotted for the first time at Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary in Kollam, Kerala. Earlier, it was recorded from the Siruvani foothills in Tamil Nadu in May 1995. The Great Eared Nightjar (Eurostopodus macrotis bourdilloni) belongs to the nightjar family. It gets its name from the two erect earlike tufts of feathers on its head, behind the eyes). The first eco-tourism project in India, Thenmala Eco-tourism Project has been formulated in and around Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary. Another important aspect of the Shendurnani Sanctuary is that there is no sandalwood trees here.

You need special permission to enter into this WLS. Forest section office locates a bit interior from the main road. Jeep facility is available to reach the high land. You better take necessary items for avoiding leech attack.

Nestled amidst the undulating emerald tapestry of Kerala's Western Ghats, Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary is a whispered invitation to nature's hidden secrets. Picture this: verdant trails dappled with sunlight, the air vibrantly alive with birdsong, and the mystical musk of cardamom plantations hanging heavy in the air. Elephants trumpeting in the distance, the playful chatter of macaques echoing through the canopy, and the thrill of spotting a shy deer amidst the dense foliage – every rustle, every whisper feels like a brushstroke on the canvas of the wild. Shendurney's magic transcends mere safaris. It's a kaleidoscope of ecosystems, from misty mountain peaks and pristine waterfalls to serene lakes mirroring the sky. Trek through sun-dappled bamboo groves, explore hidden caves veiled in legend, or simply listen to the symphony of the forest – each moment a whispered secret shared by nature. Whether you're seeking adventure in the dense undergrowth or tranquility by a gurgling stream, Shendurney offers a timeless connection to the wild, a sanctuary where time slows and whispers of wonder linger long after you leave its emerald embrace.

Very nice experience. This eco-tourism project is under the direction of Forrest departments. If you want to go to the top of the dam, you can go to the Forest Department's cart. This trip is beautiful. 10 people are just five hundred rupees. The dam and the lake can be enjoyed close by. Great place to enjoy familys.

Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary is truly a nature lover's paradise. From breathtaking landscapes to diverse flora and fauna, this sanctuary offers an immersive and unforgettable experience. Here is a glowing review that captures the essence of this magnificent sanctuary: "I recently visited Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary, and it exceeded all my expectations. The moment I stepped foot into the sanctuary, I was greeted by the soothing sounds of nature and the lush greenery that surrounded me. The sanctuary's pristine beauty instantly captivated me. One of the highlights of my visit was the incredible variety of wildlife I encountered. From majestic elephants to elusive tigers, the sanctuary is home to a rich and diverse range of species. The guided safari tours provided an up-close and personal experience, allowing me to witness these animals in their natural habitat. It was truly a humbling experience to see these magnificent creatures thriving in such a protected environment. The sanctuary's well-maintained trails and trekking routes provided ample opportunities for adventure enthusiasts like me. The hiking trails meandered through dense forests, picturesque waterfalls, and scenic valleys. I was in awe of the stunning vistas that unfolded at every turn. The knowledgeable guides shared fascinating insights about the flora and fauna, making the trek even more enriching. The sanctuary's commitment to conservation is evident in their efforts to preserve the natural habitat and protect endangered species. The conservation programs and initiatives they have in place are commendable. It's inspiring to see the dedication and passion with which the staff and local communities work together to safeguard this unique ecosystem. The facilities within the sanctuary were top-notch. The visitor center was informative, providing a deeper understanding of the sanctuary's history and significance. The accommodations were comfortable, offering a peaceful retreat amidst nature. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and always ready to assist. I left Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary with a renewed appreciation for the wonders of nature. It is undoubtedly one of the best wildlife sanctuaries I have ever visited. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a wildlife lover, or simply seeking a peaceful getaway, this sanctuary has something to offer everyone. I highly recommend a visit to Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary to experience the magic of the wild."

It's 25 km from Shencottai highway. Needed a lot of petrol in the uphill drive. The road is a bit rough at some places. If you have a good vehicle it's fun to drive. The view is not that great. You see the reservoir of Thenmala dam from the viewpoint. Don't expect much. We went in the evening. So sunlight was against photography. Maybe it's better and cool in the morning.

This is a rarely visited wild life sanctuary as sightings are rare and being neglected due to the nearby popular Thenmala ecotourism area. The forest department arranges a stay cum guided walk inside the sanctuary as a package that can be booked through their office next to Thenmala eco tourism entrance. Forest officials will take you in their Jeep into the forest camp which has basic facilities for 4 persons and food. They will also take you on guided walks to enjoy the thick forest and also along the village that sits inside. Elephants may cross your path sometimes. Good opportunity to live inside the forest at affordable rates.

Now that forest fires are not considered a natural phenomenon anymore, the next challenge to Indian biodiversity is the “plantation of forests”. This pernicious practice has been passed off as a logical solution to the problem of degraded forests. In practice, not a single “forest” has been successfully planted to the point of not requiring further plantation in the decades since Independence. The reason is obvious: the moment a “forest” is successfully planted, there is no need for more funds to be expended on it.
