The whole fort can be seen in 15 minutes, can definitely visit once. Lighthouse nearby has not been reopened yet after covid. Fort closes at 5. No separate parking, we have to park a little forward on the roadside.

There is nothing here, just walls made in those days. You can go at the top and have a laughter with friends and family. Don't come to varkala just to see the fort, you will absolutely be disappointed.

Nice fort built by the East India company for their spice trade. Name of the place means five coconut trees. Fort has a viewpoint to the sea front from top and the tunnel has been permanently closed. Toilets are clean and the personal at the Fort explain the history of the Fort. Artefacts of the Fort are shifted to Thrissur museum. It has cemetery of the British general and his wife. One of the first places in Kerala to revolt against the British.

The fort is quite small. The limited attractions and the lack of maintenance was evident. It doesn't look like a must place to visit or spend time. There are not many things to explore or see in the fort. As it's very close to the see, there you can enjoy some breeze and maybe you can go there and spend some time in the evening if the fort is not crowded.

ANJENGO FORT or Anchutengu fort is located in the coastal part of Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. It is one of the earliest British settlements in India and an important strategic fort of East India company. This fort was raised and completed in 1695 with the permission of Attingal Rani. It was built by EIC to break the Dutch monopoly over Pepper, Coir and other goods tradings. This is also used as the first signalling station for ships arriving from England. The fort played an important role in the Anglo-Mysore Wars. During the wars, the EIC stored ammunition at the fort. In 1792 the EIC reduced Anjengo's formal status to that of a Residency. In 1810 they abolished the Commercial Residency at Anjengo and handed over the responsibility for the fort to the Political Agent at Travancore. In 1813 the factory was closed. The structure of the fort is a square with four bastions. Two of the bastions faces to sea and other two to the land area. Several gun points are also built. We can find multiple tombstones in the fort premises. The Anjengo revolt was the first organised revolt against British in Kerala. Later in 1810, under the leadership of Veluthampi, Anjengo became a major center of revolt against British administration. This is a centrally protected monument under the control of Archeological Survey of India since 1921. The fort will be open for visitors from 9AM to 5PM all day except Sunday. The perfect time to visit this place is evening in order to avoid exhausting heat and sunburn. There's no entry charges or tickets required for entry. No COVID restrictions are imposed till today. The fort premises are not so maintained and the garden areas are now forested with twigs. Visitors, please avoid throwing wastes inside the premises. Several history and our root cultures lies in this place.

Historical place located near to Varkala, The surroundings are maintained well but there is room for improvement. Need to walk through the steps to the top to see the beach. On the walls the typical love messages are written. The drive to the place is very scenic. There is no designated parking space, but vehicles can be parked on both the sides as there is no traffic. This place is recommended if you are really interested in history

Anchuthengu fort is an interesting historical fort with a beautiful garden, located on the perumathura varkala beach road.It is a well maintained small spot, calm and soothing in the evenings, ample space for relaxing. Once u climb the stairs, it is a good experience to walk around the fort. Good view of the estuary, garden and the lighthouse is possible from the top.Make sure as you enter the fort do not miss the cemetery. The fort is simple without much expressive architectural detailing. It appears like a closed fortress with high pitched walls. This fort is now preserved by National Heritage Monuments. A good place for photography if interested. There are no entry or parking fees.Closing time is 6pm.

This well preserved fort, located on Varkala - Trivandrum beach road is a good place for quick visit, preferably in the morning or evening. From the ramparts one can see Arabian Ocean and towards the enterance, Varkala lighthouse is located. The road in front is quite wide and vehicles can be parked there, there's no dedicated parking available. There are no shops around and it's advised to carry plenty of water bottles and snacks. Inside there are few trees and well maintained lawn. Visitors are allowed to sit in the lawn and enjoy the breeze. This is a good picnic spot.

The fort was peaceful, well maintained, amazing place to rest and walk in peace. This was Easy India company's first permanent port on the Malabar coast. One of the ancient forts in history. A must place to visit in Varkala. There was a lighthouse nearby which is closed temporarily for now. An interesting historical fort with nice garden and plants. One can climb on the wall up and can see the view of sea and no safety rail. Trust me it would be really great to walk and view the sea from the top.

Anjengo fort is very famous. It is now a well maintained historic place. Very beautiful and calm. Less crowded place. Free entrance to everyone. Nice place to take beautiful pictures. A lighthouse is situated nearby but entrance is not allowed there as of November 2021. The view from lighthouse will be terrific. But couldn't enter there.

The oldest British fort in the Malabar cost. It's big, beautiful and well maintained by the archeological department. The entry is free and the scenery is picturesque. It's a bit of a drive from trivandrum city. But it's worth the trip as you can cover the beautiful anchutheng estuary and beach as well as soak in the prestine scenery atop the anchutheng light house (3.00pm - 6.00pm only).

Situated in Anjuthengu near Attingal, Thiruvananthapuram, the Anjengo fort was once built by the British during their first post in the coast. The place is historically significant with its legacy of spice trade, war and blood shed. The fort was built in 1696 with its high bastions for mounting guns. The fort was once a residence for around 400 Europeans and sentries. John Brabourne who was initially sent by the British EIC, along with his wife were buried in the fort premise, after their death. The tombstones can be visited as well. However the place has poor upkeeping. The fort can be visited free of cost. Timings 9 am to 5 pm.

It's just an old tippu model fort. Not much of a crowd. The fort is quite small. The limited attractions and the lack of maintenance was evident. It doesn't look like a must place to visit or spend time. There are not many things to explore or see in the fort. As it's very close to the sea, there you can enjoy some breeze and maybe you can go there and spend some time in the evening if the fort is not crowded. Compared to the other forts in Kerala, this fort lacks some typical look and characteristics of a fort. It is more like an enclosed bastion with high laterite walls. No entry fee for visiting this fort and a good place to make reels.

Even though it is a very small one, it is good experience to visit this small fort by the sea. The well manicured lawn and very neatly maintained structure and premises are appreciable. The walk along the wall of the fort with the view to the sea is nice. Also you can cross the road and climb up the light house and the view from above is breathtaking. Sea on one side and backwaters on the other side.

Anchuthengu, formerly known as Anjengo, is a coastal town near Kadakkavoor in Thiruvananthapuram District of Kerala. This old Portuguese settlement lies between Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram. Literally the word ‘Anjuthengu’ means 'five coconut palms.’ The whole land is cultivated with coconut trees. The place possesses great archeological and historical importance. In 17th century, the English East India Company selected Anjengo to set up their first trade settlement in Kerala. Queen of Attingal granted the place to the British for trading. They established a factory and a fort here with the permission of the queen. Many ancient churches, an old lighthouse, a 100 year old convent and school, tombs of Dutch and British and the Anjengo Fort are major points of interest here. The churches are built in accordance with the principles of the Portuguese architectural style. The fort played an important role in the war of Mysore in 18th century. Anjuthengu has a beautiful and clean beach. Fishing boats lazily parked on the hot sand and nets drying in the sun are worth seeing. Kaikara village, the birth place of the famous Malayalam poet Kumaran Asan, is located nearby. Kadakkavoor Railway Station, Kadakkavur Sub Treasury, Syndicate Bank-Kadakkavoor branch, State Bank of Travencore-Kadakkavur Branch, The South Indian Bank Ltd.-Kadakkavoor Branch, Kadakkavur Telephone Exchange, Kadakkavur Sub Registrar Office, Kadakavoor K.S.E.B Office, Kadakkavur Margin Free Market are within 1.5 km radius of Anchuthengu. Regular Buses are available for Kadakkavoor, Attingal, Varkala, Chirayinkeezhu and Venjaramoodu. Anchuthengu is about 36 km north of Thiruvananthapuram and 10 km north-west of Attingal. The nearest Airport is Trivandrum International Airport and Kadakkavur Railway Station is the nearest Railway Station

Entry is free. Fort on the sea coast. It's not big. You can spend about half to 3/4th of an hour here. Do climb up the stairs on the side to get on top of the fort to have a better view. You cannot actually see the beach because of the houses built along the sea coast. Adjacent to this fort is a light house. Light house visiting time is from 3-5 pm. So if you plan it a accordingly, you can visit the light house too.

(also known as Anjengo Fort) was established by the British East India Company (EIC) in 1696 after the Queen of Attingal gave permission in 1694 for the company to do so. The fort was located near the town of Anchuthengu. The forts served as the first signalling station for ships arriving from England. The fort was the East India Company's first permanent post on the Malabar Coast. The EIC commenced construction in January 1696. In June 1696 British pirates in the ketch Josiah under Robert Culliford, destroyed the Bengal Pilot Service's sloop Gingali (or Gingalle) at Anjengo. In 1697 locals attacked the fort, which was not complete, but the English prevailed. The EIC completed the fort in 1699. The fort is 256 ft (78.0 m) square, with four bastions, each of which mounted eight 18-pounder guns. The walls between the bastions had seven or eight guns. In addition, there was a battery of some twenty 18&24-pounder guns facing the sea. The fort had a garrison of 400 Europeans and 70-80 topasses. Originally Anjengo was second in importance to the EIC only to Bombay Castle

An average place. Nothing special. The place is so much habituated. The fort actually feels like a house surrounded by other houses. It's very small.. There is a lighthouse nearby. This can be clubbed along with a trip to Varkala beach/cliff.. it is absolutely fine to skip this as well.

(Translated by Google) ⚔️ Historic 🛕Anchuthengu Fort⚔️ Anchuthengu Fort, also known as Anchuthengu Fort, was built by the East India Company in 1695 in Anchuthengu, a coastal village in Chirayinkeezhu taluk in Thiruvananthapuram district. This is an area ordered by the Queen of Attingal for trade with the East India Company. In 1684, the Queen of Attingal granted permission to the British East India Company to build a factory at Anchuteng. In 1690, permission was granted to build a court here. The fort was built in 1695. It was used to signal ships coming from England. It was donated to the British in 1697, much to the displeasure of a large section of the natives. The locals carried out a vicious attack on the English factory. In 1721, the owners of a British company, disgusted with the natives, decided to meet and talk with the Queen of Attingal. They decided to send gifts to the queen to please her. The local children demanded that the gifts be handed over to the queen by themselves. When this demand was rejected, 140 British were massacred on their way to see the Queen. The British fort was besieged by children for six months. The fort was liberated only when more British troops arrived from Thalassery. The Attingal Rebellion was India's first armed uprising against British imperialism. Similarly, the handing over of Thalassery to the British caused the displeasure of Kurangothu Nair who ruled there. He was a friend of a rebellious Kolathiri king who attacked the warehouse of the British East India Company in 1704-05 and caused great damage. It was the first permanent base of the East India Company on the Malabar coast. The fort played an important role in the Anglo-Mysore War. The main livelihood of the people here was fishing and trade. The fort is now in a state of disrepair, but many people still visit the fort. A tunnel has been constructed inside the basket to carry the goods from the ship to the sea. It is now closed. This was done because the cattle were in danger of coming down this road. Adjacent to the fort is a church, a church and a lighthouse. St. Joseph's Higher Secondary School, where I studied at +1 and +2, is also close to the fort. As you climb each of the granite steps, you will be reminded of a time when the ground was noisy before the silence of the fort. Anchuthengu Fort (also known as Anjengo Fort) was established by the British East India Company (EIC) in 1696 after the Queen of Attingal gave permission in 1694 for the company to do so. The fort was located near the town of Anchuthengu. The forts served as the first signalling station for ships arriving from England. The fort was the East India Company's first permanent post on the Malabar Coast. The EIC commenced construction in January 1696. In June 1696 British pirates in the ketch Josiah under Robert Culliford, destroyed the Bengal Pilot Service's sloop Gingali (or Gingalle) at Anjengo.[2][3] In 1697 locals attacked the fort, which was not complete, but the English prevailed.[4] The EIC completed the fort in 1699. The fort is 256 ft (78.0 m) square, with four bastions, each of which mounted eight 18-pounder guns. The walls between the bastions had seven or eight guns. In addition, there was a battery of some twenty 18&24-pounder guns facing the sea. The fort had a garrison of 400 Europeans and 70-80 topasses.[5] Originally Anjengo was second in importance to the EIC only to Bombay Castle.

The fort being a historical monument is not given much of thought towards care and maintenance. It's a small fort with only boundary walls and a garden at the center prevailing now.

Anjengo or Anjuthengu is a place of historical importance located near Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram district. Anjengo is known in the pantheons of history as the location of the first trade settlement of the East India Company in Kerala. Legend has it that the English were given this site by the Queen of Attingal for trade purposes. The old English Fort or the Anjengo Fort which had faced relentless attacks in the past is now a majestic architectural marvel situated in a picturesque setting. You have a secluded beach on one side and a backwater stretch on the other.

A majestic fort in Anchengu on route to Varkala. The fort inner path is well maintained with greenery. Climbing the stairs give you a basic overview of ocean and coastal area. Though now the nearby area is populated, you can imagine the benefit of such a fort and the nearby lighthouse in the past history. The fort is open for visitors from morning 8am to evening 6pm. Near lighthouse is also an attraction to explore. The fort is not too huge like the other forts like Vattakotta near Kanyakumari. But still its a great place which reminds us of our past culture and history.

A cool lovely place to have a quick hang out.. not a big fort as we can see in North Kerala, like Bekkal. It's a small beautifully maintained fort. Not much about the fort is available to read in the premises, just two boards from the Government and Archeological Survey of India. Maintenance made should be in a heritage model, I recommend. No parking space. Won't recommend when there's is crowd.

Very few auto's are available but the cost is very high !

A peaceful place to spend an evening. Idle when the sun is about to set. Vehicles have to be parked outside. The premises are well maintained and calm. A full top-view can be acquired from the top of Anjuthengu lighthouse. There is no entry fee. There would be just 1-2 caretakers of fort. Only the road towards the fort from varkala is bit congested and people wont move away from the road to pave way for the vehicles. Towards the back of the fort you can have the beach view and houses in plenty.

An ancient fort, the first one occupied by the British in Kerala. Visiting at or after 4 would be nice. May seem crazy but this is best to visit during a rainy season. The long sight of beach is picturesque but going nearby we see houses nearby which kills the total panorama. Restroom freshen up facilities are there. Nothing to engage more than 20 minutes, one of the best spots for photoshoots.

Anchuthengu has great relevance in the history. It was the first trade settlement of the East India Company. The Queen of Attingal gave permission to the British under the East India Company to make a factory in Anchuthengu in 1684. They also got a permission to build a fort in 1690 and the Anjengo Fort was built in 1695. The settlement in Anchuthengu helped the Company promote its trade with various countries, as the place supported water way communication to the North.  They also opened a depot to keep the military equipment at Anchuthengu. In short, this small island soon became one of the major trading platforms of the British in India, after Mumbai. There was local unrest against the British in 1697 and the natives attacked the British factory at Anchuthengu, but it was a minor unrest and could create no major ripples in the political equation of the country. But the Attingal rebellion of 1721 has some historical significance. The natives were very unpleasant due to the arrogant approach of the British towards them and they were further distanced from them due to some new unjust measures that the British tried to implement in the land. But at the same time the British pleased the Queen with precious gifts. In 1721, the local feudal lords demanded the British to give presents to the Queen of Attingal only through them. The British refused to obey this and with about 140 English traders, they proceeded to Attingal with the gifts for the Queen. The local people attacked the group and killed all the English traders.  They also sieged the Anjengo Fort. The attack was defended by Gunner Inns and later the rebellion was defeated when more British force from Thalassery reached Anchuthengu. This incident is known as the first collective move against the British rule in Kerala. The fort played an important role during the invasion of Mysore king, Hyder Ali too. During the Anglo Mysore wars in 18th century, the fort became the store house of ammunition for the British. Architecture of the fort Compared to the other forts in Kerala, Anjengo fort lacks some typical look and characteristics of a fort.  It is more like an enclosed bastion with high laterite walls. The fort also has some lookout points and there entrances on east and west.
