This is known to be the 7th Church built by St. Thomas, around 70AD. So, this Church is close to 2000 years old. Amazing!

One thing remarkable about this church is that they have maintained the olden structure inthe actual form. Only the supporting walls are added. It gives us an idea about, how a Church of that time looks like.. A young graceful priest gave us detailed history and other peculiarities of Church... That was very helpful..

Thiruvithamcode Arappally ("Royal Church"; Tamil:திருவிதாங்கோடு அரப்பள்ளி; Malayalam:തിരുവിതാംകോട് അരപ്പള്ളി;), or Thomayar Kovil or St. Mary's Orthodox Church, is a church located in Thiruvithamcode, Tamil Nadu, India. It is built by St. Thomas, known as the Apostle of India, in 63 AD. It claims to be the world's oldest church that still has daily prayers and India's oldest church that haven't been reconstructed till now.[citation needed] The church has three main parts built in the 17th century and a 20th-century entrance hall. Its walls are built of locally quarried stone, chiseled with a multi-tipped chisel, a technique known in Kerala and possibly introduced there by foreign contact in the 16th century. Thiruvithamcode (also spelled Thiruvithancode, Thiruvithankodu and Thiruvithangodu) is a small panchayat town located in the Kanyakumari district of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is about 20 km from Nagercoil, and 2 km from Thuckalay.

Truly blessed and peaceful place. Was fortunate to spend two nights at the International Pilgrim Center attatched to the church. The historic character of this church founded by St. Thomas himself in the first century AD reflects the ancient heritage and indigenous presence of Christianity in India. The Indian Orthodox Church has preserved the ancient features of this church painstakingly, and the expansion of the building complex has been in tune with these aesthetic and spiritual sensibilities. The monastic priests in charge of this church are prayerful, friendly and hospitable. Divine grace is ever present here.

It is believed that the first church in Tamil nadu is situated in Thiruvithangodu, near Thuckalay. Also it is the existing oldest church structure in the World. In 53 A.D. , the disciple of Jesus Christ, St.Thomas came to India who builted seven and a half Churches. He built Churches in Kodungalur, Kollam, Niranam, Chayal, Kokkamangalam, Kottaikavu, Palayur which are all situated in Kerala. In 63A.D., he built a Church for St.Mary at Manikramam in Thiruvithancodu. This church is 45ft in length, 15ft broad and 10ft in height. This church is constructed fully with granite stone. This church has many names like St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, Thomayar Koil, Amalagiri and Ara Palli. This church is under the control of Indian (Malankara) Orthodox Church. In 16th December 2007, The Catholicose of the East Baselios Marthoma Dydimos I proclaimed this church as St.Thomas International Pilgrim Centre. It is said that during the 1940’s, this church was tried to be converted as a Hindu temple due the the resemblance of a Hindu temple. Some believe that it was Hindu shrine which was converted into a Church. But there was a cross curved on a pillar which stopped the issue. According to believers, this cross was carved by St.Thomas himself. The Church’s alter, baptism basin, incense burner are believed to be from Portuguese. Adjacent to the church is the newly built St.Thomas Pilgrimage Centre, which also function under the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. According to a historian, the original church was built under the patronage of King. The present church has been built in the site of the original church. The church has been rebuilt atleast  five times but keeping the style of the original church. Around 80 years back, the ruins of this church was found by the late Rev. Fr. Koottumkal Geevarghese Ramban, who restored the church to its present glory. There is a well near the church and according to legend, the well was dug at the time of St. Thomas and also it has never dried up

Well maintained especially the church is preserved as it is established in AD 63.The church compound has two olive trees with olives and a well which was built at that time which never gets dry. Good place to visit. This historic Thiruvithamcode Arappally, also called Amalagiri church as named by the Chera King Uthiyan Cheralathan was built by St. Thomas, known as the Apostle of India, in 63 AD.[2] It is believed to be the world's oldest existing church structure, and is now declared an international St. Thomas pilgrim center. The one room church is still maintained as it is from 63AD. except new painting done. The church today is maintained by the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, Baselios Marthoma

Oldest Episcopal Church in india. Let that sink in. Nearly 2000 years old and it feels you are in a sacred space. Granite stones of yore and made to last, the church stands and is a testimony to the early Christians and now run by keralaite Roman Catholics. Very spic and span and wonderfully calm place.
