Love the excitement this place brings, feels almost like a young boy glaring and watching the marvel of engineering unfold with each passing ship. Worth several visits...

If you've never seen locks at work, it's a neat experience. We were lucky enough to see two freighters in opposite directions at the same time. Turning a river into a staircase is brilliant. However, it's all luck to see boats using it. Not a pretty spot, but it is interesting.

In the Google maps it shows only the lock 5 East welland canal parkway . And google map doesn't show how to get on to the west side of the lock 5 canal . Really got stuck with the routes and finally joined the ship.

A fantastic place to walk, the path goes on for a long time. We were fortunate to see a boat and watch the bridge go up to let the boat through. The center was closed due to Covid but the scenery was absolutely gorgeous!

It was so interesting to watch the locks. Lots of boats. Watch for schedule times. The city should make it a more attractive area. Parking, benches ,making it a small park area. FYI there is a " Johnny" there if you're desperate. !

Good experience to see personally how they raise and lower the ships in welland canal. Pick your spots carefully, not all places have the advantage.

Perfect timing as a ship was just entering the lock. Watched the whole process and was very impressed with the whole process of going through the locks.

Lock 5 is part of the flight locks in Thorold . It is a series of locks comprised of Lock 4, 5, 6, 7...this is where the ships climb the approximate equivalent of Niagara Falls. It is a double lock. There is a small parking lot and you can park and watch the ships as they enter the lock, watch as it is filled and finally sail through to the next lock. If you are looking to see the ships Lock 3 is more interesting. There is ample parking there, a museum, kids play area and a viewing stand. Always amazed at the engineering that went into building the welland canal.
