Previously the home and workplace of the president of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War, the Reunification Palace is a must-see in HCMC. The palace was made world-famous in 1975 when a tank from the North Vietnamese army crashed through the front gates and signaled the end of the Vietnam War. The exterior of the palace is surrounded by lush tropical gardens, however, the most interesting parts of the palace are inside. The first floor contains the president's meeting rooms which are lavishly decorated and furnished, the upstairs area has many reception rooms as well as the president's living quarters, and there is even a helipad and a beautiful wooden dance floor on the rooftop. Still, the most intriguing part of the palace is in the basement, where the telecommunications center, war rooms, and maze of tunnels give insight into how the Southern Vietnamese army operated. The war rooms still have maps on the walls, and the large and chunky telecommunications equipment is on display, alongside many examples of war propaganda. The Reunification Palace is a definite must-see for history lovers!

A must visit for when you are in Ho Chi Minh. The building itself is already very pretty. The tickets are not expensive around 90k including audio tour. The audio tour gives you a nice route trough the building. You will visit all the important rooms of the former departments of the South Vietnamese government including the helicopter pad and the bunker. Really interesting visit!

This is a “must see” in Saigon, not just for its historic value, but because it’s also a significant example of Modernist architecture. (The architect was later awarded the Prix de Rome for his body of work.) Saigon is a mecca of Mid-Century Modern/Modernist architecture with this building a stand out. Lonely Planet uses the word “kitschy” to describe it, shame on the author for not understanding its value! (And after hearing bits and pieces of various tour guide comments, neither do they.) The intent behind the architect’s design is important in understanding its historic significance as well. Before visiting, maybe just do some basic googling to better appreciate how this building represents a specific period in Vietnam’s history. There’s more info on the Diem family, the history of the former and current Palace, and the architect in the only remaining building from the original French designed structure. It’s in a corner of the grounds and costs a bit extra, but well worth your time. Please don’t miss this wonderful building while in Saigon, it’s wonderful!

The Independence Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, is a great spot for history enthusiasts. Upon arrival, you might be offered an audio guide, but it's unnecessary as everything inside is well-detailed in English, which is also transcribed in the guide. However, if you opt for the audio guide, be prepared to leave your passport, driver's license, or another government-issued ID as collateral, which will be returned once you return the audio book. The space inside can feel a bit suffocating, and if time is limited, you might consider skipping it. Overall, for history buffs, it's a worthwhile visit, but for those constrained by time, it could be an area to bypass.

£1.30 entry free. I definitely recommend visiting this imposing palace of modern 1960s architecture, incorporating key Classical Chinese characters of Eastern philosophy. The outside of the building resonates a bamboo style, whilst inside the corridors are airy and bright, and the state rooms are Eastern and opulent. Don’t miss the bunker in the basement! The history is clearly explained for each area. There is an audio tour and there are plenty of toilets!

This palace and grounds are beautiful. I would highly recommend starting in the basement and watching the video about the palace. It gives a great overview of the palace and history surrounding it. From there go to each floor and visit the beautiful rooms! I wish I did the audio tour because it felt like I was missing our on information that didn’t have written info plaques. A must see in Ho Chi Minh City!

Well worth the full ticket price. If you have time, get the ticket for the complementary artefacts exhibit as well, it will help piece together the puzzle for the historical events. We thoroughly enjoyed how the museum was organised. All exhibits had accompanying English details too. The bunker is a must-visit. Head to the rooftop for some chilled drinks and resting spot. Otherwise, plenty of benches around the museum. But the entire place lacks A/C.

Came here during a coffee event and enjoyed many different roast of coffee. Owners were enthusiastic in explaining and showcasing their coffee. Meanwhile, the palace is beautiful. The architectures were there when Vietnam became independent. Good place for a half day trip if you are in Ho Chi Minh.

Fantastic street food market with bar and music. Wander around the different food stalls. See what you fancy. Order it. You are given a buzzer. Find a seat, get a beer, and then go and collect food when the buzzer goes off. Cheap good food Indian , Thai , Greek , Vietnamese , Pizza , Veg etc lots of choice.

A historical place depicting the events of the Fall of Saigon. The palace neatly maintained with all the arrangements as it was during the reign of the south Vietnam. They have safety bunkers , communication equipments , chopper and vintage cars on display. It costs some money to get the entrance. They also have a nice cafe inside. It's worth spending 2 to 3 hours. I liked the place.

Love from India. This museum is dedicated to Vietnam war history and if you are the one who wants to know how a Vietnam was born, you should visit this place. Lots of activities and fortunately the best part of vietnam is there is no separate pricing for foreigners ... This is the best policy I liked ... No discrimination...

An extremely boring place! Such a waste of money and time. Most of the time it’s like huge rooms with many chairs but that’s it. No effort put into the visitors’ experience. Maintenance is quite poor. You hardly get to feel or see anything worthy. Definitely give it a miss if you’re considering. All that there is to see can be found in the pictures below or contributed by other google reviewers.

It was an interesting visit. I just visited the main building, but they have options to visit the other building with electric car, if you’d like to spend more time in the complex. This museum gives you more background about the government in the south. It was good to visit the presidential office and chambers. You will need at least 1 hour to visit all exhibitions of the main building. I didn’t opted for the audio tour.

This place was just incredible and has to be seen to be believed. I accidentally entered the premises via a back gate so didn’t actually pay but it’s worth paying whatever the price is. There definitely aren’t too many palaces in the world where you have such free reign with so many interesting rooms and decor to see. A great place to escape the heat and amazing foresight to leave everything untouched since 1975.

Unique access makes this a particularly enjoyable visit. Worth the small entry fee. The condition is well maintained and feels like a time machine to April 1975. You can visit, or at least see, every majorly impactful room in the palace. A local guide (not my guide, just overheard) referred to it more as the Saigon equivalent of the U.S. White House than a palace- with that context the access to all spaces is really even more interesting.

Huge palace with very well explained history and meaning to the Vietnamese people. Amazing modernist architecture with strong Asian influence. You’ll probably spend more time here than expected - the palace is at least 5 floors (I lost count) and has an enjoyable garden.

Excellent Institutional complex set within a huge landscaped garden with lawns, fountains and other outbuildings. Central ceremonial entrance leads to a grand entrance hall with arcades along the front and back. Behind the sunscreen facade are full height glazing, probably inserted later into the colonial building. The bright grey monotonic arcade contrasts dramatically with the warm furnished spaces of the interior. Rooms and Halls are well preserved with period furniture and fittings and provides a rich experiential journey that encompasses both function and ceremony, from the utility of the basement bunkers to the ground floor grand public spaces, up to the private quarters and on to the rooftop lounge and garden. A rewarding excursion in time and history.

Very historic building. Lifts are available to go upper floors. Better pay for the Entrance fee is 65000 per adult which is including the exhibitions palace. Opening time is 730 - 11am and afternoon session. Go early to avoid crowd and hot sun. You will see the presidential bedroom, chambers, meeting rooms here. Indeed an eye opening experience. Well preserved.

40k for the entrance ticket, 65k if you also want to visit the exhibition that tells you about Norodom palace ( the name of the french colonial building that preceded this one). Definitely worth a visit, lots of cool interesting things to see, from the tanks outside to the bunker where the president and his family hid during the bombings

I was excited to see this palace during my visit to Ho chi min city. Everything inside & outside the palace talks about the past . History is there in everything that we see. We reached the palace in the afternoon and was very hot. We went through the palace seeing & enjoying the beauty. We could also see the work culture of kings and how one could balance every aspect of life. I was impressed by the different levels of drawing rooms for people of different stature. The helipad on the top was also impressive.

Very interesting piece of Vietnamese historical landmark, originally the French governor’s house when France was ruling the country. A lot of war materials and history facts - I suggest to take the audio commentary (an extra 100K but really worth it if you want to understand the extend of how important this building is). SCAM alert! However I would have given it 5 stars if not for the attitude of the old lady on the last floor at the beverage stand. She not only made me pay for the wrong beverage but pretended to not speak English when I pointed out her mistake and left me paying for something I ended up having to leave on the counter 👎🏼

Well the place supposed to be more informative regarding the era and political situation rather than just a brief note of what has happened on this table and who had been here as this would make the place a bit dead. Furthermore i think the place is a bit overcharged/rip-off for the amount of things you can see due to majority of the info you will get by seeing it is only chairs, tables and rooms. The place can be improvise by providing more intellectual aspects and information to make it interesting. The exterior especially the lawn was great and spacious with coffee shops just near to the entrance were placed. There is aircraft being placed on the top of the building with no access to get closer as you are only allowed to see it from a 200/300 metres of distance i guess.

Opens everyday but closes early (last tickets 3:30 pm). Entrance is 40, audio guide is 90 and gives you a bit more information than what you can find on the boards inside. The palace is nice, the rooms a bit empty. It’s not too crowded. Still a must visit in HCMC. Count 1,5 hour.

Great place to look at the history of Vietnam, need a tour guild to explain the reason for the two tanks in front and other stories behind the Place. A place full of history to visit. The building is very nice and you will find explanations near each room. At the end of the tour, you can enter a documentary room, where a film about the building and its links to the history of the country is shown

The Independence Palace, also known as Reunification Palace, played a pivotal role in the history of Saigon during the Vietnam War era. As the residence and office of South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu, it bore witness to crucial political events. Its architectural design reflects elements of Eastern culture, which adds to its historical significance. This iconic structure is more than just a building; it symbolizes the complex history of Vietnam. Visitors can explore its well-preserved rooms, underground bunkers, and meeting chambers, gaining a deeper understanding of the war's impact on the region. The Independence Palace stands as a testament to the resilience of the Vietnamese people and their journey toward reunification. Its historical importance and architectural beauty make it a must-visit destination for those interested in understanding Vietnam's tumultuous past.

There are several room to visit including bunker, conference room, president room, private area, helicopter parking, kitchen, theater, gaming room, etc. Here you can study history and remarkable items such as the tanks and airplane bombing the Palace years ago.

Had a great experience in Independence Palace that shows you Vietnam's history. The building is super impressive, and inside, you can see all these rooms and all of them were perfectly maintained. The gardens around the palace are peaceful too. You can find fighter jet and some tanks park in the garden. They also offers an audioguide for an additional fee, which is a great way to get even more information. Nearby, there's an exhibition center. If you're planning to visit both, I highly recommend getting a combo ticket which include the audioguide fee as well. If you're into country's rich history this is one of great places to check out!

I gotta say, the palace is huge. You can spend hours exploring different sections and discover alternative routes that links to multiple segments. It's well worth the money and the time. It gives you a closer look to Vietnam's political timeline in history. In the entry, you have the option or also purchasing the exhibition tickets as a combo. I found the exhibition hall to be rather small and lacking material. It's good if you wanna input more on the history of the city.

The palace does not have much information or background to it but maybe there is a lot of info if you choose the audio tour with your tickets. Reunification Palace was the base of Vietnamese General Ngo Dinh Diem until his death in 1963. It made its name in global history in 1975. A tank belonging to the North Vietnamese Army crashed through its main gate, ending the Vietnam War. Today, it's a must-visit for tourists in Ho Chi Minh City. The palace is like a time capsule frozen in 1975. You can see two of the original tanks used in the capture of the palace parked in the grounds. Reunification Palace was the home and workplace of the French Governor of Cochin-China. It has lush gardens, secret rooms, antique furniture, and a command bunker. It's still in use to host important occasions in Ho Chi Minh" This place is like stepping back in time. It is an excellent place to take in an understand what was happening in Vietnam at the time. The rooms and the informatoln boards and photos captures a dark time in the world. Definately worth a visit.

Also it’s seen many different politicians & celebrities staying in the various VIP suites the palace has. I had always wanted to visit this Palace ever since I came to live here back in 2016, never got the chance until recently. The Independence Palace, also known as the Reunification Palace, is a historic and cultural landmark in Ho Chi Minh City. It was built on the site of the former Norodom Palace, which was the residence and office of the French governor of Cochinchina. The palace was later used by the president of South Vietnam until 1975, when it was captured by the North Vietnamese army and marked the end of the Vietnam War. The palace is now a museum that displays the original rooms, furniture, and artifacts from the past. The palace is also a symbol of the reunification and peace of Vietnam.

It is well preserved palace and still use for government activity. It is easily accessed in walking distance from hotel in District 1. The tank which crash the gate ended the Vietnam War is exhibit here and also the location of the palace bombing. You can enter the bunker also. I took half day tour so the guide explains each room in this palace very detail.

Audio guide was so good. It was worth it. You'd be able to understand the stories behind each of the rooms, the halls, what their purpose was. I was amazed by how they were able to preserve the palace with its items.

A must see in Ho Chi Minh city. The palace is steeped in so much history it leaves you in awe. The bunkers were the most impressive to me. There’s also beautiful gardens to explore around the palace as well as coffee shops to sit and relax in.

I love history and this was interesting. The basement was particularly good. Deduct 2 stars because there were too many mean Vietnamese people being rude for no reason to us. We wont go back. The rest of SE Asia has been wonderful for decades to us. Not here.

A must see for fans of mid-century architecture and design. Each room had a unique but distinctly motifed design. Additionally, the bunker provided a snapshot of the dire situation that surrounded the grandeur of the upper floors of the palace; the most gaudy of all being the game room, cinema and rooftop bar deck, complete with a helipad. What I'd give to see these posh parties and guests in full regalia.

Nice piece of architecture and interesting to visit. No place is off limits, you can get down to the underground bunkers where you can see the old infrastructure from the war period. Even though there are descriptions in English, at the end of the day, it’s always a description of a room, which can get a little bit boring after seeing few rooms, however, there is a documentary room in the basement where you can see roughly 20 mins video about history of the Independence Palace. That video is really interesting and once seen, then the descriptions of various parts of the palace, rooms and areas start making more sense.

I was pleasantly surprised by the modesty of this palace. It is extremely simple and strictly designed for its usefulness in those times and less for comfort. The part where the leaders and their families lived is extremely simple and does not reflect the power of a head of state. The garden is very well maintained and with lots of greenery. There are many pictures with the heads of states who came here on official visits and marked extremely important events in the evolution of Vietnam. A history lesson I learned today. Don't miss if you arrive in Saigon!

(Translated by Google) The official name of this project up to now is still the Independence Palace, but there are still some misnomers between the Independence Palace, the Reunification Hall and the Reunification Palace [1]. Independence Palace is the name of a mansion (a building) built by the government of the Republic of Vietnam with the purpose of housing for the President (Presidential Palace, Governor General Palace) since before 1975. Thong Nhat Hall is the name of the agency (organization) that manages the Independence Palace, established under Decision No. 709 / QD-VPCP dated June 14, 2013 of the Minister, Chairman of the Office of the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. Vietnamese Association. The Reunification Palace is a misnomer from the two entities of the Independence Palace and the Reunification Hall because it is thought that after 1975 the Independence Palace changed its name to the Reunification Palace, but in fact, there was not a single text. Any official version of the regulatory authority that has the authority to change the name. In addition, in the masses of the Republic of Vietnam, this Palace was also known as the Presidential Palace or the Dragon's Palace.

It's still in use to host important occasions in Ho Chi Minh, including APEC summits.

(Translated by Google) This work was built on an area of 12 hectares, including a large mansion with a frontage of 80 meters wide, inside with a living room containing 800 people, and a large campus with many trees and grass. Large chalk building materials were transported from France to. Due to the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, this work lasted until 1871. After construction was completed, the palace was named Norodom Palace and the avenue in front of the palace was also called Norodom Avenue, after the name of the King of Cambodia at that time was Norodom (1834-1904). From 1871 to 1887, the palace was reserved for the Governor of Cochinchina (Gouverneur de la Cochinchine), so it was called the Palace of the Governor of Cochinchina. From 1887 to 1945, the Governor-General of Indochina (Gouverneur-général de l'Indochine Française) used this mansion as a residence and working, so it was called the Governor-General's Palace. The residence and working place of the Governor moved to the nearby Gia Long palace. However, the palace was only used as a workplace for the Governor-General of Indochina until 1906. When the Governor-General in Hanoi was completed, the Governor-General and most of the assistant apparatus moved to Hanoi. Here only remains the offices of the Governor-General (federal agency) in charge of Cochinchina. Even so, people are used to calling this the Governor-General's Palace. The place was clean and securely maintained. There are also security personnel on patrol and the rooms are well maintained and preserved. The place is very instagrammable as well, from the ceiling, to the hallways etc.

A good place to visit! I think if you are guide, you should go to here one times. Although many hotels or restaurants are modern now in Vietnam, Dinh Doc Lap still looks pretty modern. Because it is built with a lot of money and designed by West culture.

Went to and forgot my student ID so I had to buy a 40k VND ticket. I suggest visiting floor by floor for because this place is like a maze at first glance. Visit the bunker at the opposite staircase after you finish looking around in the first floor (where you will find the NSC chamber, offices and their family area, etc) then head back onto the upper floor of the first floor that you have just visited before the bunker. For native students: remember to bring your student ID if today you wake up and decide to visit the remarkable Independence Palace

A must see when visiting HCMC and/or an architecture fan. This is not the original palace created by the French which was bombed in the 1960s. This architecture beauty is a perfect snap shot of modernism at its finest. The furniture is also just gorgeous. I would recommend you give your self a couple hours to walk around. Also, go early as this is a popular site for youngest to take photos.

A beautiful palace deeply associated with the fall of saigon back in 1975. There were very beautifully designed halls, meeting rooms, communication rooms, bunkers and even a helipad right at the top. Recommended to use an audio tour for best experience as you will get easily overwhelmed with what's inside and the history associated with them.

Just take the palace only ticket (40,000VND per pax). Great place to spend some time. If you explore all the floors, you'll take about 2 hours. Don't forget the visit the bunker floor at the basement (a little hard to find, only 1 entrance to that floor). Keep your tickets with you as we were randomly checked while taking a walk at the garden outside.

This place is a must-visit for anyone traveling to the city. This historic site played a significant role in the Vietnam War. The palace's impressive architecture and beautifully landscaped gardens are a sight to behold. Many locals also come here for taking Instagrammable pictures with the beautiful interior. About 4-star rating. It's just for me the concept is only showing rooms. And since I went to War Remnants Museum first, this one's museum concept is not as varied as the War Remnants to be honest.

I paid about 60 k for the general admission on Independence Day. The place is crowded and the lift wasn’t working so everyone has to climb the stair which was the downside. The place is relatively small but it is still fun to see the luxury life of noble in Vietnam back in old days.

  • 4/5 David V. 9 months ago on Google
With the reunification of Vietnam in 1976, the government was permanently moved to Hanoi, and this building was eventually turned into a museum. Rebuilt in the 60s after a bombing it was built with a large amount of symbolism. My favourite is the room of fire, which appropriately enough is for debating. You can also visit the underground bunker, that has been preserved as is.

Good place to take a walk around and have a feel of the history of Vietnam. I came here on the weekday and the ticket price was about 200K dong.. the palace is quite huge and theres alot of rooms for the public to view. The only question I have is why does the palace consists of so many meeting rooms ? The other problem with my visit here is the humility of the building... There is not a single fan here... Neither is it air conditioned... I would suggest wearing light clothing so as not to sweat alot.

Very interesting to see the excesses of wealth and understand the ethos behind the country's communist beliefs. I recommend taking the audio guide that provides lucid explanations of each room along with historical and cultural information. The place could do with some air conditioning though, if it's within the realm of possibility.

Initially we weren’t planing on visiting the Independence Palace but after cruising by in a Grab we decided to check it out the following day. So glad we decided to visit the site as it’s a massive structure arrested in 1975. The sheer indulgence in the volumes of each room are striking to experience. The interior spaces resist any form of human closeness and instead impose a distance between people evidenced by the grand tables, extremely separated seating, broad walkways around the palace. Even the primary apartment feels dehumanized. This isn’t a critique of the space but more an awareness of how palpable the authority of the space is felt throughout. Not to be missed.
