Swami Vivekananda, the chief apostle of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, has founded the Ramakrishna Math and Mission and the new branch, 181st branch was established at the guest house of Maharaja Bhaskara Sethupathy’s palace Madurai. The branch extend all kinds of assistance, including financial assistance to poor students, besides providing vocational training and nursing courses to men and women. Very good humanitarian services are carriedout here.

Nice ashram, place to meditate in madurai. There is a temple, book stall, school behind ashram and statue of Vivekananda in front of the ashram. Free entry for Indians and foreigners too. Math is around 10km away from madurai railway station.

Let me talk about the bookshop here in this Madurai Math (ashram). If you're looking for Spiritual Books (yoga, vedanta, gita, upanishads etc etc) in English (and Tamil, of course) this is the place. Ramakrishna Mission Publications are very famous for publishing critically acclaimed spiritual books. So you'll be doing yourself a favour by scoring some top hits from here. And the books are very reasonably priced, which means you might get greedy, so beware. In here hours will go by and you won't even notice. Recommended.

Madhurai has got a long standing relation with the Ramakrishna movement. The pioneers of the movement Swami Vivekananda, Swami Ramakrishnananda, Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Brahmananda to name a few had visited and stayed in Madhurai. All of them had visited Divine Mother Meenakshi's temple had vivid experiences there. The Ramakrishna Math here has been doing commendable services here for past several decades. A beautiful temple with most of the Pujas being performed, a middle school, dispensary, library and an excellent books sales department at the entrance having Ramakrishna, Vivekananda & Vedantic Literature. Most importantly the lush green atmosphere inside the concrete jungle appears like a Oasis amidst buildings. Anyone visiting even in very hot summer days during the hottest days could feel the superb effect of the beautifully grown and protected trees inside the ashram campus.
