An optimal, quick and dry option to move within the districts of Antwerp. This type of tunnel is rarely found anywhere in the world.

I enjoyed the wooden escalators as well as the many historic pictures on the sides. Also the tiles telling you how many meters you've walked. Just a pity I wasn't there at night. The view on the city from the opposite side of the centre was a treat, since you do not get many opportunities otherwise to have one. Definitely worth walking the tunnel when in Antwerp.

It was a cool experience to walk under the river for so long. I found the wooden escalator and elevator particularly interesting, and it was all free

It's interesting to see old technology and to go down, under the river. It's main use is a pedestrian crossing, so don't expect more than that. The tunnel can feel narrow at times so probably best avoided if suffering from claustrophobia. Additionally, bikes speed past at times so one must watch out for them.

Pedestrian (and cycle) tunnel to City Centre of Antwerp. We camped on the opposite side of the river and this was ideal way to visit the city. There are wooden escalators and large elevators at either end. Free of charge to use. Great experience.

Must-see. It feels amazing to know that you're walking under water. Everything gives to the atmosphere, the staircase, the old tile-walls, and I especially appreciate the use of tunnel lights for representation and decorative effects. I was especially lucky to visit it during pride month.

Not something that you can find easily anywhere else, this tunnel is a nice and unique experience. The escalation is wooden and I found restriction signs funny, as I come from the country that doesn't have that many bikes running at the transport. I recommend to walk the tunnel one way to get o the other side of the river, and then to take a free water bus to get back, or vice versa.

Interesting & off the beaten path. This tunnel connects the heat of Antwerp to a residential section. Take the early 1930’s wooden down & back out of the tunnels. It’s about a one way 15 minute stroll with nice views of the old city from the other side. We enjoyed it.

Nice place, too bad the cyclists don't follow the rules (none of the Pakweg 200 we encountered)

A truly evocative tunnel, with its history and its characteristic wooden escalator under the Shelda river.

Historical tunnel connecting both sides of the scheldt river. It is about 500 m long and the entire tunnel goes underneath the river. The infrastructure is clearly very old however everything is very clean and well maintained ! I especially like the wooden stairs ! Overall cool and enjoyable free way to cross the scheldt river. Bikes are also allowed 👍🏻

Tunnel across the canal in Antwerp, the tunnel is about 500m long and has old and really interesting escalators taking you down (or elevators if you have a bike and can wait!)

Free tunnel for cyclists and pedestrians. Bikers can take an elevator down or up and then cycle through the tunnel. When crossing the tunnel there is a lot of activity, everyone wants to be the fastest. As a pedestrian you should orient yourself correctly.

Very interesting way of crossing the river. The tunnel is quite long and in good state but the stairs are quite big attraction. Look very old, loud but makes the tunnel quite big attraction.

Reminds me of the Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg. You can reach the tunnel either with an elevator (bicycles) or via a beautiful wooden escalator. It goes 31 meters deep and the tunnel is 580 meters long. On the other side you are almost at the water and have a wonderful view of Antwerp. Definitely worth a visit!

The pedestrian tunnel is a highlight of Antwerp. The escalator is made of wood and is still fully functional. It's very loud, but it's pure nostalgia. The tunnel offers the opportunity to quickly get to the other side of the Scheldt. It's drafty and a bit cold. The mix of pedestrians and bicycles is interesting but also tiring. Unfortunately, I have one point of criticism. There are photos hung on the walls along the escalator. Unfortunately, the tunnel is very simple. I would have liked to see a few nostalgic photos here too.

Shah, is it a sight or a tunnel to get from A to B? Tunnel was fun to have done, but it is and remains a Tunnel. What made it more fun was the authentic wooden escalator..

One of the less known but very historical places in Antwerp. You can see, hear and smell the past while working on your stamina at the same time!

Curious place, made of wood. Long tunnel Inde the rivet that takes you to the other part of the city with the best views. I recommend to visit it.

Worth seeing. We then took the free ferry back to the center of Antwerp. Recommended.....

Antwerp is situated near the river Scheldt. This waterway, which runs all the way to the North Sea, divides our lovely pearl into a vivid right bank and soothing left bank that allows you to escape the busy city life. To go to the right or left bank one could take a tram, drive a car or go on foot. The latter, which is my favorite, is made possible by a pedestrian tunnel that we locally refer to as the “Sint Annatunnel.” Don’t be fooled, this isn’t just a regular underpass I’m writing about. The tunnel is a time capsule that dates back to 1931 – 1933. Clench your hands and close your eyes as you step on the first escalator. Feel how cold air surrounds you leisurely. Hear how the whispers of an incredible past compel you to relax your hands to take out your camera and shoot some stunning photographs. After changing escalators at an intermediate floor, you’ll reach the walkway with a length of approximately 572m. I recommend that you pay attention to small details. Such as the materials that have been used for these escalators, and so on. The style reflected in this tunnel is undeniably tainted by the Belle Époque era. Bring along a nice hoodie or jacket if you get cold quite fast. You don’t want to upset any conservative locals while you take this trip down memory lane in a dazzling top or T-shirt. “Bruce Almighty” forbid you’d proudly show how nippy you are.

Very long and old tunnel, mostly used by bikers to cross the river it seems. Cool place to check out if you have spare time! The escalators gives nostalgic vibes of the old times.

First time coming in here. Not so bad. You can experience walking in the tunnel under the water. The stair is long and deep. it's nice experience to be here.

  • 5/5 Liam S. 2 years ago on Google
As long as you are aware that there's a large number of cyclists, it's a good way to cross over the other side. The long tunnel is very atmospheric, with the wooden escalators adding to its charm.

It was a great experience. My husband is from Antwerp, and he wanted me to walk through. We saw the "light at the end of the tunnel," which means in the United States, the bad is near the end, and things will be much better.

Nice tunnel. Here you are able to walk or cycle from one side to the other side. Tunnel is below Schelde river. You can go bij the stairs or elevator.

A visit to the center of Antwerp is easy when parking on the left-bank, and walking through the pedestrian tunnel towards the center. To see this meanwhile historic infrastructure still in use and well maintained is worth the walk as a reason on its own. 5 star experience.

To get over a river you usually use a bridge, but not here. To get on the other side of river you go though long underwater tunnel.

Weird experience, not for claustrophobic tourists. The tunnel seems to be frozen in time (the escalators have wooden steps), everything kept as it was originally built, in the art deco style of the 1920's.

It was very cool to walk underneath the river. The wooden escalators on the way down to the tunnel were very neat. The pictures that showed the construction of the tunnel were interesting as well. It was quite warm when I was here, and it was nice and cool in the tunnel. If you're looking for a respite from the heat, this alone is a good reason to check this out. Beware the bicyclists.

Otherwise better go with pounds because I do not like walking through the tunnel. Pound should continue until later because it stops too early. We all love ❤️ Antwerp!
