Interesting exhibition of Albania’s rich history up to 1945, though most documentation is very old and only partly (and poorly) translated into English. A striking omission is that the post-1945 period of Communist terror is barely covered, with only a few exhibits in a single room and hardly any documentation in English. This leaves the impression that this museum is mostly intended to glorify Albania’s past, while brushing over the darkest chapter in the country’s history. For that reason, it is definitely worth also visiting the Bunk’Art exhibition on the crimes of the Communist regime. No card payment or payment in EUR possible.

500 lek as opposed to the 300 quoted on online sources but worth it. Lots of artifacts and interesting information about Albania from way in the past up to its most recent independence in the 1990s. Some information in English but not all. However, a lot of it speaks for itself. Situated right on the main square in the city centre.

I enjoyed the museum. There is a lot of beautiful artifacts. The cost was 500 lek. Toilets at front of building ask tickket seller to point it out. Many floors. I was worn out by end of second floor. They can accommodate wheel chair. They have elevators and added ramps recently.. Also, chairs and sofa for people who need a short rest.

Museum is located in communist era building and it seems that much of exposition is also from this time. Building seems to be not heated and local supervisors are quite cold. Museum has a rich collection of antiquity, up to Byzantine/Latin struggles and there is not much after the conquest of Ottomans. I urge to visit souvenir store- lady there was very nice, helpful. She is selling some quite valuable, old ethnographic items and some items from local craftsmen.

A must to visit to understand the complex and so mixed Albanian culture. This museum presents a rapid and superficial presentation of the last 2,500 years of war, peace, development, political and religious changes with an extra large room dedicated to comunism critisisum.

The history of Albania in one museum. So many interested things to see. I wish they had texts written in english in some exhibition items so foreign citizens could understand more things about albania, apart from that it was great!

Probably 4 stars but it is an extensive museum where you will surely learn things. Covers a wide time range, Bronze Age to WW2. Maps, objects, photos, clothing are all part of the museum. There is even an iconography section which includes stuff from Kosovo. Generally there is a bit too much writing in bunched up mega-paragraphs in each section. Not a great way to transmit the knowledge. People would walk right by a lot of it like “Sorry this happened to you Albania but I’m not reading all that.” Text is in Albanian and English only. Worth the 500 lek entry but hard to understand why they close at 4pm and don’t take euros or card. Definitely one of the best museums in the country.

It is cash only. Don't bother asking- there is no senior discounts for non-Albanians. Contrary to several of the reviews the artifacts were labeled and described well on the first floor. Most of the second and third floors did not have English descriptions, however. The first floor has artifacts ranging from the Stone Age to medieval times. Other exhibits cover the resistance to Ottomans and the communist regime, iconography from Orthodox churches and Mother Teresa.

Awesome museum! Totally worth going if you are in Tirana, it’s pretty big but it can be a fast visit if you don’t want to see everything. It costs 500lek per person or around 5€.

Interesting displays charting Albania's history from ancient to modern times. Not expensive so worth a browse. Some beautiful Greek busts. English translations for most sections although unfortunately not for all the more modern bits.

The museum is actually quite detailed, dating from prehistoric times to the Communist period. Most of the older exhibits have English explanation, however the newer things are only in Albanian. Also, Hoxha is not really mentioned. The gift shop leaves something to be desired for. 5 eur for adults. Can spend as much time as you want. We walked rather quickly through, spending about 45 minutes. Unfortunately the nice Soviet Era mosaic on the outside of the building is undergoing renovations so you can't see it. Bathrooms on site.

Only a fifth of museum content is translated to English. I was interested to learn about the communist era but there was no english information. The ancient history section is interesting and updated. Nobody bothered to press play on numerous TVs that were supposed to show video material. 1-2 hour walkthrough. In the gift shop they are literally selling their 100 year old artifact clothing pieces for next to nothing.

The National Historical Museum of Albania stands as a captivating testament to the rich and complex history of this Balkan nation. Housed in an imposing communist-era building, the museum's vast collection spans centuries, from ancient Illyrian artifacts to more recent historical exhibits. Its comprehensive displays offer an immersive journey through Albania's past, highlighting its struggles, triumphs, and cultural evolution. While the museum's organization and presentation might benefit from modernization, its role in preserving Albania's heritage and offering valuable insights into its history makes it an essential stop for anyone eager to delve into the country's fascinating narrative.

The museum is full of excellent information, and is nicely laid out. I particularly liked the ancient history - artefacts from over 2,000 years ago, and a good explanation of the ancient Illyrians. It then walked through the middle ages through to the formation of the current Albanian state in the early 20th century, explaining the importance of language and how various people played their part. The second world war fight against fascism was also covered in detail, showing how the communist party led the fight. However, the museum's main exhibitions finished there, with nothing about the Hoxha years. The building was very nice, quiet but welcoming to children, and spacious. It gave me a lot of insight into the Albanian people. Some of the exhibits had English translations, but many did not. You need to give at least 2h to visit, but I think I stayed for about 5h. There was no food on sale.

The National Historical Museum is an excellent place if you want to learn more about the history of Albania. This museum is divided into historical times. You can learn many things, starting from the Illyrians, the traditions of the Illyrians, the culture of the Illyrians, etc. In this museum you will not only learn about the history of the Illyrians, but more than that. This museum preserves and studies material and non-material evidence of Albania's historical and cultural heritage, which it communicates and presents in an environment that promotes education. It also organizes and enables activities that support its vision and mission. There are about 6200 objects in the museum premises, which belong to a relatively long period of time, starting from the 4th millennium BC and up to the second half of the 20th century. There are about 3100 exposed objects. The rest of the objects are in funds. Currently, the National History Museum has seven pavilions: Antiquity, with 585 objects; Middle Ages, with 217 objects; Iconography, with 90 objects (of which 70 are icons and 20 are church liturgical objects.

Everything there is to know about Albania's history, from ancient to current times and it's a must do when in Tirana. We were lucky to get a guided tour from the most knowledgeable guide ever and, even with a somewhat limited time frame, he knew it all! The mosaic on the front is a classic, amazing and gorgeous communist era piece which is somewhat the worse for wear now but still worth studying and knowing all the characters in it.

It's a must see museum, fairly priced (200 lek) however, you can't pay by card. The only problem is that mainly the first and part of the second floor have English illustrations. It would have been nice if everything was explained in English as well. I would have enjoyed it more since it's a quite big museum.

One of a series of public buildings in Tirana that will attract your attention by its monumental fascist/communist architecture that is typical of the period when Albania was isolated from the rest of the world. The columns may have been heavily influenced by Italian pre-WWII architecture, but the theme of the mural has more to do with communist era art.

An interesting piece of Albanian history and one of several abandoned places that are worth exploring. It is easy to enter and many people do, but watch your step when you walk around, as the place is in disrepair. You can climb some stairs to see the upper floors or go to the basement, but again, be careful where you step. Also, it seems that some people (probably homeless) are staying there at night, so you'll encounter some trash and waste.

Feel so bad about this museum . Really. If they change some things like the interpretation, new ideas or something similar it would be a very interesting one. They have the potential to do it and i hope they will do it soon. About the pros of this museum is that it has many pavilions for different ages and eras of our country history. Everything explained in a nice way. Also the staff very friendly and helpful!

18th August 2023: Never judge a museum by its front mosaic. The museum starts with the Greek and Roman period before moving on to the Byzantine and then the Ottomans, these parts are translated directly into English which means some of the meaning is lost. The information is also like a 10 year olds first PowerPoint which has been heavily influenced by copy, paste and Wikipedia. Once you get upstairs and it moves onto the 2 world wars and the communist revolution, the museum gives up translating all together and all the exhibitions are in Albanian. I'd say if you've only got 2 days in Tirana (like I had) and you're interested in learning about what Albania has been through in the last 100 years, go to the bunk'art museum in the north of the city and then to the house of leaves and avoid paying to go into this museum.

Is it real or is it a joke?? Better to cancel it from the map. It is located inside the defence ministy teritory and yo need to be accompanied in . I tried 3 times to go and the best answer I got at the guar point was "if you know someone of the museum call him to come and pick you up because they don't answer us at the phone". Very bad also because on the paper it is very intresting due to the presence of chinese and domestic equipments impossible to fin in any other museum in Europe

Pyramid of Tirana, Tirana, Albania Not quite as impressive as the Great Pyramid of Giza, this pyramid in Albania’s capital is definitely a little strange. It was built as a monument to Enver Hoxha, a Stalinist dictator who ruled Albania for 40 years and sealed off the country from the rest of the world until his death in 1985. Built in 1988, the structure closed down when communism collapsed in 1990. It was reopened later as a conference center, theater, nightclub, television station, and other unexpected purposes. Abandoned and closed to the public for many years, the Pyramid of Tirana was planned to be demolished in 2011 but was later saved after a public outcry. There are plans in the works to turn this unusual structure into an education center.

I visited today (April 2019) and they are in the process of blocking it off. Fence encompasses the entire front side, working around each side. The back is still open but it appears they plan to circle the whole building. Very quirky architecture and sad to see it in such disrepair. Hopefully someone is getting ready to do an update!

It’s in the heart of the city and a sight to be seen. Unfortunately it’s closed off with the use of a fence but there is a small opening. I asked police officers if it was okay if I run up the pyramid and they said “K, no problem”!. So that’s exactly what I did! FYI - it’s easiest to run down :)

Mixed feeling. I love that it exists, but it would be done better. There are so many artifacts, but I wish there was a better narrative to understand the progression and advancement of Albania. Good enough for an hour or so. First floor covering ancient history of Albania is well done, with plenty of English signage, but the modern history exhibits upstairs are almost entirely in Albanian only. The hours on Google are wrong. Currently, they're open 9am to 4pm Tuesday-Saturday, 10am to 3pm on Sunday, and closed Mondays. The building is undergoing renovation, but is still open.

Definitely worth a visit if you like museums and history, but not for the casual viewer. The museum has the potential to do a lot but misses a few key points. The first floor has translations to English, but after that there’s about 10% coverage. From the Middle Ages, through to the renaissance and independence I had little idea what I was looking at, only at WW2 were there English descriptions again. Descriptions were lacking in the context of why these things were made, by who and why they’re interesting. A lot of them were just visual descriptions, with little detail about the significance of the piece. The religious section was gorgeous, plus some of the few depictions of Jesus in shades darker than alabaster. A warning on the Communist Terror room - I only took a few steps in and walked out again. I find pictures of dead people too upsetting (there are numerous throughout the WW2 section) but in the Communist Terror room I saw pictures of dead children and immediately left again. Finally the entry is in Lek cash only, you can’t pay in euro or with card.

Museum about the full history of Albania. Has a lot of things to see. When you enter the museum it looks a bit empty and outdated. There’s a few rooms that are still empty. We got the tickets really fast which aren’t expensive, like €3. You can really take about 3 hours to go through the whole museum. Small downside is that not everything is translated in English, which makes you miss some information.

A well equipped museum with plenty of artefacts. Tickets are cheap priced at 500 LEK each. For an English only speaker such as myself, the first half is fine where English translations on descriptions are shown. However in the second halfish, only Albanian language is shown so it made it very difficult to understand the artefacts. Is very hot inside too so consider that if the day is hot, there is no air conditioners only pedestal fans. Would recommend going if you are in Tirana :)

(Translated by Google) The largest Albanian museum houses many of the country's archaeological treasures and a replica of the huge Skanderbeg sword. The collection of Greek and Roman statues, mosaics and columns inside is breathtaking. A disturbing and very important gallery dedicated to those who suffered persecution under the communist regime is the most recent addition to the collection. Another highlight is a magnificent exhibition of icons by Onufri, a renowned Albanian master of the 16th century color. The modernist mosaic that adorns the facade of the museum is titled "Albania" and shows the victorious and proud Albanians from the Illyrian era until the Second World War, with some surprisingly communist shades.

Last year we were unable to visit it because non-Albanian citizens need to send a request to the email address that is on the web page 3-4 days before. The museum is open from Monday to Thursday from 9.00 to 16.30 and on Friday from 09.00 to 14.00. For males, you need to wear long trousers otherwise they won't let you in. The museum is not huge but very interesting. There are two areas to visit, the outside and the inside. Outside there are numerous military vehicles including planes, armored vehicles and various types of jeeps. The highlights of the exhibition are the two MiGs and the MIL. Helicopter, instead, you dive into the history of Albania from the time of Skenderbeu until the end of the cold war. You will find a vast assortment of English, German, Italian and Soviet weapons, as well as kalashnikov made in Albania, proudly brandished by the staff. In addition, numerous Chinese-built apparatuses, used by the Albanian army over the years, are also exhibited. The staff is extremely affable, informed and involves the visitor on the tour, inviting him continuously to interact with the numerous exhibits. Highly recommended if you want to learn more about the history of the Cold War in Albania. (Original) Un'esperienza bellissima. Erano due anni che il mio ragazzo ci voleva andare. The National Historical Museum in Tirana is a must-visit for anyone interested in Illyrian and Albanian culture and traditions. The museum does an excellent job of showcasing the different eras of Albanian history and telling the story of its people. It's a great place to visit with family, but be aware that there are exhibits about the communist era and its executions that may not be suitable for young children. Overall, the museum is beautiful and well worth a visit. The only downsides were the restroom conditions and no air conditioning.

Probably the worst National History Museum you will find in Europe. It is a prime example of what happens when you cut funding for cultural institutions. First, half of the exhibition probably dates back to the period in which this museum was recently opened. Second, there is absolutely no logic to the sequence of the pavilions you visit, you jump from Renaissance to Antifaschist War. Also, descriptions in English language are limited to a bare minimum. Third, the presentation of the upper floor is similar to that of a 14 year old using PowerPoint for a school project - way too much information and random arrangement of images. In short, not worth your 500 LEK until it's clear what actually happens to that money.

Nice museum with a good collection reaching from ancient to modern times. Bigger than expected (1-2h). The first floor seems to be modernized. The other floors are mostly without any English translation. Cash only and no euro is being accepted.

Strong focus on ancient Albania, with galleries devoted to prehistoric, Greek and Roman times with some nice mosaics and statues on the ground floor, with English translations. The higher you go (it has 3 levels) the more the quality drops as does the translations. Minimal information on the communist regime, or of Hoxha. Also poor air conditioning means the higher you get the more uncomfortable it becomes, not encouraging you to linger.

The Armed Forces Museum (AFM) is a typological museum and reflects the most important military events and the best values inherited from our nation over the centuries of its history. It expresses the identity, memory, development and progress of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Albania. The idea for the construction of the Armed Forces Museum has started earlier, but it was implemented by order of the Minister, no. 252, date 04.06.2010. In 2012, the building, which is located inside the territory of the garrison “Skërderbej” (TRADOC) was reconstructed, turning it to museum functions. The Armed Forces Museum is located inside the territory of the garrison “Skënderbej”, TRADOC, Tirana. The museum building was part of the architecture designed by the Italian army in 1930 -1931, for the engineering garrison of the Albanian Army. The project for the reconstruction of the building was carried out by the Institute of Research and Design of Defence Deeds (IRDDD). Project sponsors are private the companies: Eurocopter, Green Technology, Nexter Systems. The design of the square was made by the Museum and Institute of Research and Design of Defence Deeds staff. The interior design of the museum was made in cooperation with the museum staff, Institute of Research and Design of Defence Deeds and a group of professors from the Academy of Arts of the University of Tirana. The inauguration ceremony took place on December 4, 2012 in the presence of high representatives of Albanian Government and other dignitaries from our country and foreign countries. The normal activity of the Armed Forces Museum began on December 5, 2012. The Armed Forces Museum is available to domestic and foreign visitors. Currently, it has awakened the sensitivity and attention of citizens, especially of the veterans, active and reserve servicemen, historians, scholars, researchers, students, etc. Students of military academies of different profiles, as well as high school students of all levels will find suitable conditions not only to visit, but also to pursue the development of classes for events with military and historic character.

It's closed. Fenced off, and the reason it gets 3 stars instead of one or two is because the policeman working there was professional and helpful in explaining to me that it would be closed one or two years. On the other hand, the parking attendant or Security guard at the radio station was unhelpful, rude, and just plain useless. I should have continued pass him to the building for a picture. Not that I would.

  • 5/5 Soghomon 3 years ago on Google
Got to give it 5 stars for weirdness Also known as Hoxa’s Pyramid and designated by his daughter, the structure is said to be originally destined as a mausoleum for the late dictator. Instead, the not so esthetically concrete pyramid seems to be used as informal housing.

Difficult to find a communist building/monument that isn't ugly. :) This one definitely is but what is more frustrating is that they have not done anything to maintain it, build a museum inside or have at least an explanation outside of it. If you don't have a guide or don't google, you have no clue what you are standing in front of.

The lower level with the prehistoric to ancient artifacts is worth seeing. Most of the rest is completely uninteresting for tourists, with little or no context explained. For this one floor the price was fine when it was 200 Lek, but now they raised it to 500. If you already know quite a bit about Albanian history, it is sort of interesting, otherwise don't waste your time. Also careful if you are with small kids, when we visited there was a special exhibit with large photos of massacred bodies, completely visible from the hallway. Put up a curtain at least.

We had such a bad experience, bad information or chaotic museum in Albania as the Historic Museum in Tirana, so bad museography, bad and lack of text, almost nothing in English. Two important rooms was closed as the ethnographic and another one about history. So bad the wall painting was entirely covered in winter 2021- 2022, too long waiting for this ! Bad bad… it lacks more of wall paintings and sculptures in all Tirana, please support more the Albanian artists, the city needs to be more covered of arts. Please not Castle shops which it is so bad project, nothing cultural, only shops and nothing about history. I recommend more the museums of Gjirokastra much better than Skoder or Tirana. In Skroder is only one very good is Marubi museum. The other museums were closed or with a chaotic museography. Only two recommended museums in Albania: Marubi in Skroder and The Historical Museum in Gjirokastra. It would be important to approve the museography of the Historical Museum in Tirana, better lights, a real museography, better photo, texts, more chronological, better rooms…

Nice museum. It is large, so I would recommend to clear up your time for the next 2 to 3 hours. The contents were very interesting, although drying the Zog family era there was no documentation just a few slides. But be careful since some artifacts are not protected by anything so it is very easy to break something, even unintentionally. Overall nice museum. The gift shop is very interesting with antique scarfs and more.

Okayish museum. Considering the fact that mainly tourists will visit - there are huge parts of the exhibition that were not translated in English. Mainly the “younger” history of Albania. But since it was a lot of text anyways and the photos gave a good impression, I’d say it’s fine. You can learn about the younger communist history in bunkart 1 instead. Entrance fee is 500 LEK pP.

The "National Historical Museum" was inaugurated on October 28, 1981 and is the largest museum institution in Albania. The "National History Museum" building occupies a total area of 27,000 m2 and has an exhibition area of 18,000 m2 and a total volume of 81,000 m3. In the museum premises there are about 4750 objects, which belong to a relatively long period of time starting from the 4th millennium BC and up to the second half of the 20th century. The museum is designed to be presented through eight pavilions.

A little outdated and boring if you’re not able to read the Albanian language. Sometimes there’s info in English available, but for the majority of the museum’s collection it’s not. So I entertained myself looking at the items and pictures :). I bet it’s super interesting if you’re able to understand what it’s all about

Very interesting place to visit, has items from bronze age to war time. Disability friendly with lots of seating areas. I would recommend a visit, lots of renovation works are currently being carried out but this does not affect your visit

Nice museum with many different exhibitions. Quite big bit but lacks on English explanations (it has some but most big texts are in albanian). Needs some lighting improvements. Price 500 lek.

Very big museum. Cool stuff to see about the history of the region and Albania. Some parts don’t have a lot of English translation but you can still learn a lot.

Quite a disappointment to me. Although it started great, soon we realised most of the informative posters aren’t available in English at all. Although temperature inside was pleasant, I could feel very strong lack of any fresh air. Still, I consider it a must visit when in Tirana. Tickets were purchased via MyTicket platform. They offer a discount when buying tickets online, therefore, ticket was purchased for 400 LEK when it’s 500 LEK onsite.

500 lek, a good price. Lots to see over two floors. Could do with more explanation in English, especially on the second floor. Good air conditioning. And chairs and settees dotted around so you can take a break and soak up the atmosphere. Highly recommend a visit

A clasic museum history, above the entrance of the museum is a large mural mosaic titled The Albanians that depicts purported ancient to modern figures from Albania's history.
